    <div class="html-content"><p><span>Dear UMBC Community,</span></p><p><span>UMBC's </span><a href="https://sustainability.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Office of Sustainability</a><span> engages with the campus community in numerous ways to help inform our work to promote sustainability within our interconnected environment, society, and economy. One way we engage is through surveys, which help us to develop benchmarks for various initiatives and to inform ongoing and new projects.</span></p><p><span>This is a reminder about the following survey, which assesses specific knowledge, beliefs, and practices of UMBC students, faculty, and staff. The input you provide will help the Office of Sustainability to create programs, services, and procedures allowing us to better serve you and your fellow Retrievers. </span></p><p><span>Those who participate in the survey have the option to enter into a drawing for a UMBC Sustainability Matters reusable water bottle and sticker!  We will randomly select five students, one faculty member, and one staff member at the end of the survey.     <div class="html-content"><p><span>Dear UMBC Community,</span></p><p><span>As you may recall, President Sheares Ashby </span><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/insights/posts/127047" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">announced in August</a><span> that UMBC would begin a national search for a new vice president position to lead diversity, equity, and inclusion work across the campus.</span></p><p><span>As a key next step, we have assembled a search committee which includes faculty, staff, and students who will work with search firm Isaacson Miller to identify outstanding candidates for the Vice President for Institutional Equity and Chief Diversity Officer role.     <div class="html-content"><div><span>Dear U</span><span>MBC Community,</span></div><div><span><br></span><span>Today, <em>The Baltimore Sun</em> published an article focused on UMBC's Title IX compliance and a related Department of Justice investigation. </span><span><br><br>As your new president, I would like to share with you where I stand. First, I am deeply concerned about our students and our entire community, and I am committed to the highest standards of care, safety, integrity, and compliance. </span><br><br><span>We have and will continue to cooperate fully with the Department of Justice in their investigation. We will share updates with our community as we are able.  </span><span><br><br>During our <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/7bng5i/bzfpibc/30nqf9" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Convocation Ceremony</a> August 30, I pledged to work alongside you to continue building a community where sexual violence and misconduct are never acceptable. We will address reports that come to us and continue the work of education and care. <Title>Terry Cook Announces Retirement</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Colleagues,</span><span><br></span><span><br></span><span>After 32 years of distinguished service to the University System of Maryland, Terry Cook, Senior Associate Vice President of Administrative Services, has decided to retire at the end of the 2022 calendar year. Terry came to UMBC in 2008 from the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC), where she served as Senior Associate Vice President. Prior to that, Terry spent 15 years at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) in both Facilities Management and Procurement management roles.</span></p><p><span>Over her 14 years at UMBC, Terry has provided executive oversight and supervision to Facilities Management, Procurement &amp; Strategic Sourcing, Environmental Safety and Health, Management Advisory Services, the Bookstore, and Campus Card/Mail Services. She also provided oversight for our dining services and CEI Arena management contracts and handled all real property matters. She is widely known and respected for her professionalism and integrity, attention to detail, extraordinary work ethic, and strategic thinking skills. Her ability to keep multiple projects on track is unmatched.</span></p><p><span>Terry’s expertise has also been key to numerous unique and transformative projects, including the transition of the Columbus Center in the Inner Harbor to UMBC’s management, launching the UMBC CEI Arena, facilitating the return of the District Courthouse property to UMBC, and establishing the campus’s first Enterprise Risk Management Initiative. Most recently, Terry played a major role in facilitating the transfer of the 175-acre Spring Grove property to UMBC. Her work partnering with the Office of the Attorney General, the Maryland Department of General Services, and the Maryland Department of Health to ensure the successful transfer of this property was remarkable. Because of Terry’s efforts, UMBC is well positioned for future development at Spring Grove.</span></p><p><span>Please join me in congratulating Terry for her outstanding career and thanking her for her tireless work for the UMBC community.</span></p><p><span>A search for an Associate Vice President of Administrative Services will begin immediately.</span></p><p><span><em>Kathy L. <Title>Dr. Christine Mallinson New Appointment</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Dear Members of the UMBC Community,<br><br></div><div>I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Christine Mallinson as Special Assistant for Research &amp; Creative Achievement and APLU-CoR Fellow in the Office for Research &amp; Creative Achievement effective September 1, 2022.</div><div><br>Dr. Mallinson is Professor of Language, Literacy and Culture and Affiliate Professor of Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies at UMBC.</div><div><br>As Special Assistant for Research &amp; Creative Achievement, Dr. Mallinson will advance UMBC’s mission by working with the Vice President for Research &amp; Creative Achievement in establishing a campus-wide program to establish grant-writing academies designed to catalyze NIH research funding for UMBC faculty.</div><div><br>In April 2022 Dr. Mallinson was selected as a Research Leader Fellow of the Association of Public &amp; Land-Grant Universities – Council on Research (APLU-CoR), a year-long leadership development program designed to provide training and skill development to individuals who work closely in various capacities as or with the University’s Chief Research Officer (CRO), including those who aspire to transition into CRO positions in the future.<br><br>As an extension of the APLU-CoR Fellow program, Dr. Mallinson will be working closely with colleagues in the Office of Research &amp; Creative Achievement, with UMBC’s RCA Council, and with Associate Deans for Research in each of the Colleges to develop and implement a new NIH Grant Accelerator Innovation Network (NIH-GAINS) across our campus.<br><br>Dr. Mallinson first joined UMBC in 2006 as an Assistant Professor in the Language, Literacy, &amp; Culture Program.  She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology &amp; Anthropology and an M.A. in English Linguistics, both from North Carolina State University, and a B.A. in Sociology and German from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. <br><br>Since 2018 Dr. Mallinson has served as the Inaugural Director of the Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3), where she launched the college-wide center, spearheading and leading initiatives that advance social science research for faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students across the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and overseeing the college’s social science research administration unit. <br><br>Dr. Mallinson has a strong record of university service and leadership. She currently serves on several university committees, including UMBC’s Research &amp; Creative Achievement Council, Faculty Affairs, and the Provost’s Interdisciplinary Activities Advisory Committee.<br><br></div><div>I am delighted that Dr. Mallinson will share her talent and experience to support the growth of our campus-wide RCA efforts.  Please join me in congratulating Dr. Mallinson on her new appointment and supporting her in this important endeavor.</div><div><br></div><div><em>Karl V. <Title>UMBC Not Included in Boil Water Advisory</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Dear UMBC Community,</span></p><br><p><span>On Monday, September 5, Baltimore City issued an </span><a href="https://www.wbaltv.com/article/ecoli-coliform-found-in-water-of-city-fire-police-facilities/41082279#" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>advisory for some residents to boil their water</span></a><span> in response to E. coli bacteria detected in samples of the water supply in parts of West Baltimore.</span></p><br><p><span>UMBC’s main campus is not a part of this advisory. However, we are aware that some community members living off-campus and in adjacent communities may be. Anyone in this area is encouraged to review this information from the </span><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/emergency/drinking/drinking-water-advisories/boil-water-advisory.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Centers for Disease Control</span></a><span>.</span></p><br><p><span>Our Facilities Management team is monitoring the situation and will update the community if necessary. <Title>Take a Survey &amp; Win Some UMBC Sustainability Matters Swag!</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>Dear UMBC Community,</span></p><p><span>UMBC's </span><a href="https://sustainability.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Office of Sustainability</a><span> engages with the campus community in numerous ways to help inform our work to promote sustainability within our interconnected environment, society, and economy. One way we engage is through surveys, which help us to develop benchmarks for various initiatives and to inform ongoing and new projects.</span></p><p><span>The following survey assesses specific knowledge, beliefs, and practices of UMBC students, faculty, and staff. The input you provide will help the Office of Sustainability to create programs, services, and procedures allowing us to better serve you and your fellow Retrievers. </span></p><p><span>Those who participate in the survey have the option to enter into a drawing for a UMBC Sustainability Matters reusable water bottle and sticker!  We will randomly select five students, one faculty member, and one staff member at the end of the survey.
