<Title>URCAD Sneak Peek: Angela Endres</Title>
<Tagline>Digital animation about the beauty of change</Tagline>

My goal for this project was to convey how I feel about my surroundings while also making this piece look cinematic, especially focusing on creating interesting transitions. I strove to achieve this feeling by combining a strong music piece with imagery of peaceful environments. One of the benefits that art has as a medium is its ability to communicate nonverbally; for example, my piece says nothing, yet the sounds and visuals instill a feeling. Art is subjective, and that reflects into psychology; each person sees and reacts to works of art differently. Such aesthetic experiences have the ability to arouse emotion whether it be joy, awe, or even negative feelings. As I have grown up watching animated pieces that have given me strong emotional responses, I now find myself wanting to do the same to others, and I would like to further strengthen my ability to use animation in this way. As I prepare for my senior project, this technique is something I hope to experiment more with.</span></div></div>

At an empowerment and development level, if communities are equipped with an understanding of how ecological factors affect human health, they can better manage their ecosystems and their population’s wellbeing. Thus, the shortfall of environmental knowledge and consideration in global health interventions spurred the formation of my degree. The Individualized Study Program has been the perfect place for me to develop the skills necessary to be a global health team manager because it has enabled me to glean perspective and knowledge from health sciences, geography, and environmental science in order to better comprehend and work to address environmental issues that impact population health. An interdisciplinary approach to studying the gap between global health and environmental factors has empowered me with an integrative way of thought that matches the multidimensional nature of public health crises. <br></div><div><strong><br></strong></div><div><strong>What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree? </strong><br></div><div>As an aspiring mixed methods researcher and the daughter of Latin American immigrants, my intellectual passions include designing, implementing, and evaluating collaborative social behavioral interventions that benefit marginalized migrants, women, and youth in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). My drive to advance implementation science research in LAC motivates me to earn a PhD. Therefore, after graduation, I will immediately enter into a PhD program in public health (I am still deciding which of my PhD program offers to choose for fall 2021). The rigorous process of developing and defending my own undergraduate degree plan has instilled in me transferable skills relevant to graduate school. For instance, working with multiple mentors has enhanced my skills in stakeholder management and communication. I also gained experience in applying for and earning grants, managing a project budget, and synthesizing distinct insights and theories from across my coursework in order to ask innovative questions. All of these experiences will provide a key foundation for my doctoral training. Most importantly, the strategies of integration and scholarship of interdisciplinarity that I have gained through my degree enables me to approach problems from a different perspective which will enrich the projects and classes I partake in. <br></div><div><br></div><div><strong>**Keren was recently selected as a Presidential Fellow at the University of South Carolina where she will be attending graduate school </strong><br></div><div><br></div><div>2020-2021 URA Scholar<br></div><div><a href="https://ur.umbc.edu/home/our-researchers/research-profiles-20-21/herran/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Analysis of Mental Well-being of Environmental Migrants in Maryland </a></div><div><br></div><div>

<div class="html-content">We are thrilled to celebrate the success of INDS students Andrew Park and Tristan King for their <a href="https://news.umbc.edu/students-focus-on-mental-health-and-the-environment-in-2020-umbc-idea-competition/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">second place</a> win and award for Best Presentation in the <a href="https://entrepreneurship.umbc.edu/competitions/umbcs-idea-competition/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Alex. Brown Center’s Idea Competition</a> in November 2020! Andrew and Tristan teamed up to present their business idea called Sproutful, an interactive meditation app and an actual accompanying plant that you “feed” with time spent in mindful meditation. <br><div><br></div><div>Both Andrew and Tristan are in their final semesters at UMBC, completing their capstone projects and looking ahead to more entrepreneurial ventures. While taking INDS 480 in Fall 2020 Andrew approached Tristan and asked if he wanted to collaborate on this project. With Andrew’s INDS degree titled “Digital Product Development and Design”, and Tristan’s titled “Development of Digital Therapeutics for Psychotherapy”, it was a clear match that these two work together to design a product that merged technology and psychology. <br></div><div><br></div><div>Over the years, they had been hearing about the Idea Competition through their Entrepreneurship courses. In the 2020 Idea Competition, 19 submissions were received and 6 were asked to present before a panel of three successful entrepreneurs. Andrew and Tristan were coached by Vivian Armor, director of the Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship, who was enthusiastic and encouraging throughout the process. <br></div><div><br></div><div>For their 3-minute presentation, Andrew and Tristan explained Sproutful and how it works. They outlined how this smart watering plant system monitors meditation and mindfulness habits. By having a physical component to the practice one has a visual sitting piece to recognize their growth in the mindfulness habit. The judges announced that the award for Best Presentation was unanimous. One judge said, “Your presentation was phenomenal”, while another said, “The coordination between you two was seamless.” Despite the Idea Competition held virtually for the first time, Andrew and Tristan practiced their clear message and worked through potential technological issues that might be faced as a two-person team. Andrew said, “Through INDS 480, we were taught public speaking skills, making sure that what we said was precise and succinct.” <br></div><div><br></div><div>This spring, Andrew and Tristan have entered Sproutful into the <a href="https://entrepreneurship.umbc.edu/competitions/the-cangialosi-business-innovation-competition/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition</a> (CBIC), also sponsored by the Alex. Brown Center. In this competition the entrants are asked to build a prototype of the product and present a business plan. Winners of the CIBC are offered opportunities to be partnered with venture capitalists. The cash prize can be a great incentive, but Tristan said that he is most looking forward to getting connected with the network of entrepreneurs in the community. Andrew has already been contacted by alumni who remain engaged with the entrepreneurial competitions at UMBC. In fact, INDS alumnus Marcus Proctor won the first CBIC in 2014 with his business idea “EduPal”. <br></div><div><br></div><div>We intend to follow Andrew and Tristan as they work through the final rounds of the Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition this spring, taking Sproutful to the next level. <br></div><div><br></div><div>You can watch the 2020 Idea Competition online: <br></div><div><a href="https://umbc.webex.com/recordingservice/sites/umbc/recording/265a6340073c4d6fb96c91a776cee2e9/playback">https://umbc.webex.com/recordingservice/sites/umbc/recording/265a6340073c4d6fb96c91a776cee2e9/playback</a><br></div></div>

This work attempts to question contemporary assumptions that texts and technologies can be inherently post-feminist, or that there has been such an evolution in the construction of these texts that they situate themselves as post-feminist- void of binary gendered roles and regressive socio-economic assumptions of class performance and the position of women in society. A sampling of three to four cookbooks was selected from the 1950s, 1970s, 1990s, and 2010s, loosely in alignment with pre-second wave feminism, second-wave feminism, third-wave feminism, and post-feminism, respectively. Utilizing discourse and textual analysis, recipes and their anecdotal accompaniment were reviewed, as well as how the texts constructed domestic spaces and encoded class and gender within their instructions. The expected findings are that old gender norms and class performance scripts have been appropriated by contemporary texts, but with different verbiage. This research will provide support for existing literature tracing the pervasiveness of class performance, toxic masculinities, and gender binaries within cookbooks and other technical documents. This is critical in order to understand how sexism and classism are reinforced even in texts often viewed as apolitical as instruction manuals.</span></div></div></div>

<Tagline>England's nuns after the dissolution of the monasteries</Tagline>

Most all but vanished after the Reformation. The women at the head of these communities wielded various amounts of power, both inside their walls and in the local towns and villages. As the English Reformation took hold in the 1530s and monasteries were abolished, these women responded to the upheaval in their lives in a variety of ways. Some accepted their fates and meager pensions, while others turned to powerful allies and patrons for assistance and relief. Some women renounced their vows, and others fled to the European continent to maintain their Catholic faith without fear of persecution. Few records about the nuns survive, but a careful review of pension rolls, state papers, and correspondence from this tumultuous period reveals that England's Catholic nuns responded to the criminalization of their faith and the loss of their homes in both familiar and surprising ways. Two thousand women's lives were uprooted when the government closed and destroyed all of England's Catholic religious houses. Their abrupt disappearance, both from their local communities and the historical record, merits further study.</span></div></div>

They occupied the end of the Fine Arts building hallway with a Steenbeck viewing machine thanks to Professor Cathy Cook and Christian Valiente who believed they would one day be useful. For this project, over the course of two semesters, I went through all of these films, archived, cleaned, fixed, catalogued, dated, keyword-ed, organized numerically and by genre. all of these films. The genres include Documentary, Educational, Experimental, Narrative, Student, Advertisements, and Miscellaneous. The earliest film found was a D.W. Griffith print from 1912 and the latest from UMBC students sometime in the mid-90s. The hope is that this archive will make the films far more accessible and allow for potential student and faculty use. With some of my most coveted footage that I found in the archive, I created my own poetic and experimental twenty minute found footage film,</span><span> it happened one ritual once aboard time;</span><span> which explores place, time, and intimacy.</span></span></div></div></div>
