URCAD Sneak Peek: Devon Fick

Developed after WWII for the purpose of stabilizing local currency and preventing exchange-rate corruption involving the desirable American dollar, the MPC initiative was relatively successful throughout the 1950's and into the early years of American involvement in Vietnam. However, as the war dragged on, and systemic leadership and organizational problems at all levels became commonplace, the MPC became the very thing it was designed to deter; a hopelessly corrupt and abused form of currency. This presentation will show how MPC’s were viewed by American servicemen and Vietnamese merchants and citizens and the frequently-evolving laws governing their use. The highly contentious “C-Days” (Conversion Days) when American servicemen were required to remain on base so that a new series of MPC could be issued, will be described as well as the aftermath of these days which often led to increased graft and even violence. The colorful banknotes will also make for a highly-visual presentation and also include interviews with three Vietnam veterans who will describe their personal experiences with this military currency.

Nursing homes, or skilled nursing facilities, provide 24/7 medical care for those who need short term rehabilitation and those for whom the nursing home is their permanent home due to their level of health needs (National Institute on Aging, 2017). With many residents residing for a decade or more in the same community, relationships form between staff and residents (Ådland et al., 2021). Consequently, feelings of extreme grief and distress may be expressed by staff when residents pass away and the repetition of loss can take a major toll on mental wellbeing, due to a lack of opportunity to step back and grieve (Ådland et al.,2021). A review of the literature exploring the impact of grief and loss, following the passing of nursing home residents, on the staff who care for them will be provided. Recommendations for practice will be made and a strategy presented that can be implemented within the long term healthcare field to support formal caregivers when coping with the loss of residents with whom they may have formed deep connections.

The Black church has been one of these politically transformed spaces that have been impactful in promoting movements around political ideologies. The Black body is political, and so are all cultural and religious practices from that experience. This research uses ethnographic and choreographic practices to explore themes of embodied Blackness, relational power, and institutionally-bound socio-political obligations. This research considers the question: how do congregants within Black Religious Institutions identify with their role in the political landscape that has led to change in diplomacy, legislation, awareness and transparency, civic engagement, and rights expansion -- even on a microscale. Through collecting and interpreting oral histories within Black Religious Institutions, these stories and interactions informed a new contemporary choreographic work and an inquiry into choreographic methodologies foregrounding Africanist movement expression and values.

B.A. INDS: Art and Custom Prosthetic Design
B.A.: Visual Arts, Animation

Degree Mentors

Foad Hamidi, Information Systems

Symmes Gardner, Visual Arts

Steven McAlpine, Individualized Study

Why did you choose to major in INDS?

When I learned about the INDS program, it seemed like the best fit for my career plans! I came to UMBC as an animation major both out of a love for the medium and with the hopes I would learn some useful 3D modeling techniques I could use for prosthetic design. I didn't think an engineering degree would cover everything I wanted and my heart has always been with the visual arts. But when I found out I could create a degree through the INDS program I knew it was what I was looking for. My degree requires a multitude of different perspectives; from engineering, psychology, visual arts, and disability studies. An INDS degree offered me both the opportunity to pull from different disciplines through varied course work as well as integrative tools and strategies to understand how these disciplines relate to one another. Having this integrated perspective allows me to approach prosthetic design with a broader understanding of the factors that impact prosthetic creation and acceptance.

What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?

In the long term I hope to be able to work on a freelance basis designing and fabricating custom prosthetics for people. My immediate post-graduation plans have shifted a bit recently. I would really like to take some time off from academia so I am looking into getting a job or internship as a prosthetic technician or to begin training for that role right after I graduate. I am hoping to do that for at least a year or two before returning to get my masters, either going through med school to become a certified prosthetist or pursuing a Fulbright scholarship to get a degree in Integrated Product Design in the Netherlands. While it may take a while for me to ever have my own business in creating custom cosmetic prosthetics, I can see myself working as a technician and experimenting with ways to innovate the current cosmetic options while within the current industry. Either way I'll be able to put my degree to good use fabricating prosthetics, whether it's on my own or as a part of a larger organization.

EXTRACURRICULAR

I was able to present at URCAD with an animated short from my Intro to Animation class in 2019 and presented again in 2020 as a part of a team for the Kinetic Sculpture Redesign. I also worked as a TA for the Spring 2021 semester for the Kinetic Sculpture. Over the summer of 2021 I received a grant for the Linehan Summer Research award and was able to spend my summer researching 3D printing and modeling techniques and begin fabricating my own prosthetic prototypes. I am currently working as an assistant researcher with UMBC's DARE LAB for the Rec2Tech program in Baltimore. This research is about developing a curriculum for teachers to teach students how to use different Makerspace tools. I have dabbled in some clubs over the years, I participated in some Animation Club activities and I'm hoping to be more involved in the Disabled Student Union of UMBC this semester!

For more information on Susanna's INDS journey please click here:

Meet Kayla Thomas

<Tagline>INDS Spring 2022 Graduate Highlight Series</Tagline>

B.A. INDS: Natural Disaster Management

Minor: Health Administration and Public Policy

Degree Mentors

Dr. Jeffrey Halverson, Geography and Environmental Sciences

Dr. Sara Poggio, Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication

Eric Brown, Individualized Study

Why did you choose to major in INDS?
I chose to major in INDS for a number of reasons. Firstly, I
have a passion for all things w eather relat ed, especially
natural disasters. The science behind natural disasters and
their ability to destroy cities within seconds , fascinates me.
Secondly, ever since I toured The R. Adams Cowley Shock
Trauma Cent er in the tenth gr ade, I have found a love for
trauma informed care and the fast pace nature of all things
emer gency r elated. Lastly, I have always been interested in
the inner workings of various social groups and how those
groups int eract, live, and work within society, mor e
specifically, low-income groups. When I came to UMBC, I
did not find my three passions within my first chosen
major and minor. However, when I t alked to Professor
Brown about the INDS department, I knew I could combine
my passions into one and bridge the gap between my
disciplines . Then, I became excited about pursing education
and w as finally able to claim my education at UMBC.

What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?

My ultimate goal is to become a disaster specialist for FEMA; however, that career path requires years of preliminary job experience. In the mean time, I hope to work for either a non-profit that services minority groups, low-income communities, or veterans or work for a local or state government under their emergency management department. Wherever I end up working, I hope to combine my disciplines to bring an interdisciplinary perspective to the workplace. Furthermore, I want to expand my understanding and collaborate with the perspectives of my colleagues to broaden my knowledge. Eventually, I plan to get my PhD in Emergency Management.

EXTRACURRICULAR

I completed an internship at the non-profit organization, The Samaritan Women where I created a comprehensive, 50+ paged crisis response plan that is currently being implemented in sex trafficking shelters across the United States. I also am in the progress of an independent study with Dr. Halverson where we are creating a timeline of hurricanes that have hit low-income areas in the United States and exploring how the negative impacts could have been avoided and/or reduced.

For more information on Kayla's INDS journey please click here:
