New Library System Coming in Summer 2024
UMBC and all USMAI Libraries to migrate to Ex Libris' Alma and Primo systems over Spring 2024
This spring, UMBC along with the 17 libraries across the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI) will be implementing a new integrated library system (ILS), Alma, that will go live on May 23, 2024. Throughout the spring, our migration task force will be working to replace the current system, which has been in place for over 20 years.
An integrated library system manages the basic functions of a library, such as checking library materials in and out, keeping track of orders and subscriptions, and providing the infrastructure that allows library users to search and access library materials. This system migration is a huge step forward, and will help modernize UMBC's current functionality and usability, increasing cooperation with other systems across our campus and with other academic institutions across the state.
A new discovery service will power the AOK OneSearch, and it will streamline search functions and your access to local resources and scholarly research. You will notice more features that will allow you to more easily manage your loans, requests, and citations. Keep an eye out for a preview of the search interface in the coming months.
We will be providing updates as the project continues throughout the spring especially with information on any temporary service changes or suspensions as the new system is prepared. If you have any questions please reach out to aok@umbc.edu

What is
ICARE?
ICARE
(Interdisciplinary Consortium for Applied Research in the Environment) is a
cross-sector network of environmental scientists and engineers committed to
increasing the diversity of the environmental workforce and engaging
communities in local environmental research in and around Baltimore. We
administer an NSF-funded research training grant for UMBC masters students in
environmental sciences and engineering, and this luncheon will celebrate our
amazing trainees and their research networks.
What is CoNavigator?
CoNavigator is a hands-on 3-dimensional concept-mapping tool developed by
scientists in Copenhagen, and we use it to map out trainee research projects.
Trainees will conavigate their projects with their research mentor teams for
half the day and present a poster during the other half.

The Academic Success Center (ASC) space in the Library will re-open for face-to-face services on Monday, March 4th, 2024, once construction is complete.
Until then, please note that ALL academic support services provided by the ASC are still available to students. Information about the location and/or modality of the various services is available on our website.

- Writing Center (Help with writing assignments for any class)
- Computing Success Center - Located in Fine Arts 010 - (Help with computer science, computer engineering, and information systems courses as well support with programming languages for all students, regardless of major or course.)
The NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program is for students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science research. The program provides scholarship recipients up to $20,000 per academic year for tuition, educational, and reasonable living expenses. Scholarships are awarded for one year and can be renewed for up to four years.
For every year of scholarship support, scholars commit to two paid service obligations in the NIH Intramural Research Program. These are:
- A ten-week full-time summer internship at the NIH immediately following the year of scholarship support
- One year of full-time work at the NIH post-graduation; this service obligation may be deferred until completion of an advanced degree program.
To apply for UGSP, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. In addition, you must:
- Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time undergraduate student at an accredited four-year college or university.
- Have a grade point average of 3.3 or greater on a 4.0-point scale, or rank within the top five percent of your class.
- Demonstrate exceptional financial need certified by your undergraduate institutions financial aid office
