Researcher of the Week: William Hanchett

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

How did you decide on your research project?

The topic was presented to me by Dr. Lamdin of the Economics Department.

What courses or other experiences prepared you for this research project?

I work in the field of finance which definitely helped when exploring different concepts while I researched the topic. The courses I'd taken in personal finance as well as macroeconomics definitely helped when applying the ideas and implications of the data to the real world.

What was the hardest part of your research?

The hardest part was pulling all of the data together to form cohesive conclusions. With so much information, it took a lot of time and analysis to figure out which parts were most relevant. I also wanted those who saw my presentation and/or read my paper to really grasp the implications, so getting my points across congruently was challenging, but definitely an enriching learning experience.

Does your research connect back to the courses you are taking?

My research definitely connected to my classes, most specifically the macroeconomics class I was taking at the time through large scale implications of the research itself. Becoming familiar with more research methods and formats gave me new perspective on some of the material covered in previous classes as well. I had taken Dr. Lamdin's corporate finance class and I applied material learned from that class and statistics classes in gathering and analyzing the data.

What are your plans for after UMBC?

I want to do the Master's program at UMBC through the Economics and Public Policy departments. I may also complete a Master's program elsewhere in Economics; more specifically, International Economic Policy and Analysis, but I'm very interested in many different subjects as they relate to Economics, Public Policy and Finance.

Do you plan to do anything that builds on your research?

I've definitely had many ideas that have come from researching this topic that tie financial markets with economic indicators as well as analyzing past economic policy's effects on current conditions in both the US and other areas of the world. I believe this topic has many, many different paths for interest and I'm open to exploring some of them in the future.

What advice do you have for other undergraduate about the research opportunities at UMBC?

Definitely be active in seeking out opportunities and if you're like me and are presented with the opportunity, do not hesitate to do it. I had a lot going on the past semester, but researching was such as rewarding experience even though my workload was stacked. Also, don't be afraid to look into every possibility for information because you never know what aspect may be important to your research.
Read more about William's research at the link below.

Neurons grow and develop in the
three-dimensional (3D) environment of the developing embryo. Previous
work from our group has demonstrated that culturing embryonic neurons in
3D matrices allows the cells to respond in a way that more closely
resembles natural development than traditional two-dimensional (2D)
culture. Cells interact with their extracellular matrix and sense the
dimensionality of their surroundings via integrin receptors on the cell
surface that bind to matrix molecules, initiate intracellular signaling
cascades and affect changes in cell shape and function. Our work focuses
on elucidating the signaling events that regulate these changes in cell
response. We hypothesize that 3D environments impose changes in
matrix-ligand organization and alter neuronal behavior by modulating
β1-integrin cytoskeleton signaling. PC12 cells, a neuronal cell model,
were cultured on 2D and within 3D collagen substrates and probe the
signaling response by inhibiting several key signaling molecules
involved in regulating neuron morphology: β1-integrin, Focal Adhesion
Kinase (FAK), and an activated form of FAK that is phosphorylated at
tyrosine 397. The results of this study will identify the key signaling
mechanisms in 3D neuronal culture and provide a biological basis for
    testing new biomaterial-based therapeutics.

"CEO Chat" with James Bessen of Research on Innovation

<Tagline>Learn about building your own successful company</Tagline>

  Friday, April 6, 12:00 - 1:00pm PUP 367

James Bessen is a scholar who studies the economics of
innovation and patents. He has also been a successful innovator and CEO of a software company. Currently, Mr. Bessen is Lecturer in Law at the Boston University School of Law and Fellow at the Berkman Center on Internet and Society at Harvard.

Bessen has done research on whether patents promote
innovation, how and why innovators share new knowledge, and
on how firms developed new skills and technical knowledge
during the Industrial Revolution. His book, Patent Failure: How Judges, Bureaucrats, and Lawyers Put Innovators at Risk (Princeton 2008) with Michael J. Meurer, highlights the problems caused by poorly defined property rights (“patent notice”).

In 1983, Bessen developed the first commercially successful
“what-you-see-is-what-you-get” PC publishing program, founding a company that delivered PC-based publishing systems to high-end commercial publishers. Intergraph Corporation acquired the company in 1993.

Get in on this opportunity to "chat" with James about the things he learned in business that seemed at odds with what he learned in the classroom (patents, sharing knowledge, the high cost of learning on the job, etc.) He'll also discuss his recent research on this topic.

How long have you worked in the Women's Center?
Since September of 2010

Why do you think the Women's Center is important?
The Women’s Center offers so many women’s-related resources and programming, and provides a safe space for women (and men) of all backgrounds to visit and in which they feel comfortable. The Center is a place many visitors have meaningful conversations, whether that was the purpose of their visit or not (many times they wind up staying longer than originally intended). Also, I can’t stress enough the importance of our lactation/meditation room, which has allowed many mothers (including faculty and staff) to comfortably pump during their days spent on campus. Balancing a career (whether academic or professional) and being a mom is not easy and knowing that we can offer support to make this transition easier for new mothers is important to me.

What is your favorite thing about the Women's Center?
My absolute favorite thing about the Women’s Center is the sense of community one feels immediately upon visiting us. I’ve not only experienced this myself, but have heard many others express it, as well. Once you walk through these doors, you immediately feel the positive and nurturing vibes from the Women’s Center community. Also, the Returning Women’s Support Group rocks!

What have you learned from working in the Women's Center?
I’ve learned what a sense of community means to me and to others. I’ve often heard, especially among returning women students and mothers, that they never really felt a part of the UMBC community until they visited the Women’s Center to take advantage of our resources. Upon experiencing this myself, as well as hearing it from many others, I understand and take much more seriously the importance of feeling a sense of community within an academic setting.
