Jerry Stephany papers now available at Special Collections

UMBC’s Special Collections holds a world class collection of photographs. With over 2 million images, including those by Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus, and Berenice Abbott, the Photography Collection includes a vast array of photographic treasures. Former UMBC Photography professor Jaromir “Jerry” Stephany deserves much of the thanks for this collection. An influential photographer and teacher, Stephany’s papers now sit alongside the collection he helped build. Stephany’s papers, which are open to the public, hold insights not only into Stephany’s teaching career, but also his personal life and the general history of photography.

Jerry Stephany was born in Rochester, NY in 1930. During the Cold War, Stephany trained as a combat photographer and served at Rhein-Main Air Force Base in Germany. In 1956, Stephany received his degree from Rochester Institute of Technology, where he studied under famed photographers Ralph Hattersly and Minor White. Four years later, Stephany earned a Master of Fine Art from Indiana University, where he studied Cliché Verre under the guidance of photographer Henry Holmes Smith.

Stephany first began teaching the history of photography when working on staff at the George Eastman House. In 1966, Stephany moved to Baltimore to start teaching at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). At MICA, Stephany served as the chair of the department of photography and film.

In 1973, Stephany left MICA to become an Associate Professor of Photography UMBC. At UMBC, Stephany established the Photography program. Under his guidance, UMBC’s Special Collections began developing its Photography Collections. Even after his formal retirement in 1999, Stephany remained an active member of the UMBC community, continuing to teach a history of photography course and serving on the Council of the Friends of the Library and Gallery at UMBC.

Stephany exhibited his photographs at a number of venues, including the George Eastman House, Baltimore Museum of Modern Art, UMBC Library, Smithsonian Institution, and the International Center of Photography. With his photography, Stephany held a constant fascination with the abstract and science fiction. Throughout his career, he would also return to the Cliché Verre technique.

In April 2010, UMBC’s Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery hosted a long-planned retrospective of Stephany’s photographs with an emphasis on Cliché Verre, titled Music of the Mind: Jaromir Stephany Photographs and Digital Images. That same month, Stephany passed away. Two years after his death, in 2012, Tom Beck and Emily Hauver published the exhibition catalog, which is now available for purchase.

The Jaromir Stephany papers contain records relating to Stephany’s work as a photographer and educator, as well as his personal papers. Included in this collection are professional and personal correspondence, teaching materials, personal photographs, genealogical records, and files from Stephany’s exhibitions. There are also personal writings, interviews of Stephany, and audio-recordings of lectures given by other photographers. The papers were processed by History Graduate students Robin Martin, Johanna Schein, and Dorothy Alexander under the guidance of Archivist Lindsey Loeper.

Want to come look at the records yourself? Contact Special Collections to set up an appointment at x52353 or speccoll@umbc.edu. We also hold open research hours on Monday through Friday, 1pm to 4pm, with additional hours from 4pm to 8pm Thursday nights.

This post was written by Special Collections Graduate Assistant Johanna Schein.

INDS is proud to announce that Asif Majid is UMBC's Class of 2013 Valedictorian! He is the first INDS student to be named valedictorian of a graduating class! We hope you join us in celebrating his awesome achievement!

Here is what the selection committee presented to Dr. Hrabowski:

Asif Majid is a wonderful example of UMBC’s commitment to “produce socially engaged
citizens who graduate with the commitment and experience to serve responsibly in their communities, state, and nation.”

An interdisciplinary studies major in Global Peace Building and Conflict Management, Asif’s
ongoing inquiry into the nature of human conflict and his search for
creative solutions have been a consistent driving force for him both in
and out of the classroom. His search to understand and make a difference
led him to such diverse experiences as: leading an international summer
peace camp for Arab, American and Israeli teenagers in Maine, teaching
history and script-writing to middle school students in Minneapolis,
leading UMBC students on a an Alternative Spring Break trip focused on
homelessness services in Baltimore City, participating in the Model UN
Conference at Johns Hopkins, and a year-long study abroad in Morocco.

A gifted scholar, member of the Honor’s College and a Sondheim Scholar,
Asif is described by INDS faculty as the “ideal interdisciplinary
student.” His studies encompass a vast array of disciplines including
Arabic, Anthropology, Modern Languages and Linguistics, Political
Science, Geography and Environmental Systems, History, Sociology, and
Music. He speaks Arabic and French and has knowledge of Gujarati, Urdu
and Spanish. According to Dr. Michael Richards, Professor and Chair of
the Department of Music, Asif is also a talented percussionist, whose
ability to synthesize diverse information from a variety of disciplines,
enables him to think about music on a deep level and develop carefully
thought out musical interpretations and technical decisions. Asif’s
independent research, which has resulted in two Undergraduate Research
Awards and a Boren National Security Scholarship, investigates how the
performing arts can be used to facilitate empathy and transform
conflict. His capstone projects focuses on transgenerational migration
and identity in North Africa and will yield a scholarly paper as well as
a Brechtian play confronting the social justice implications of issues
related to migration, transnational identity, human rights, sexual
harassment, and the Arab Spring, which will be performed at UMBC at
    URCAD and on May 12th.

Asif is an enthusiastic champion of UMBC and an active contributor to the
UMBC community. He has been a tour guide since 2010, a member of the
INDS council of majors, a student representative to the Patapsco Hall
Addition design team, a member of the UMBC orchestra and leader of the
percussion section, and an active volunteer in the INDS Department (for
which he will receive this year’s Mary Jo Kleiner Award for Outstanding
Service to Interdisciplinary Studies). As Dr. Brigid Starkey from
Political Science stated in her letter of support, Asif “has loved his
time at UMBC and will be an international ambassador for this campus for
the rest of his life.” Asif will pursue a Masters degree in Conflict
Resolution at Georgetown University in the fall.

Researcher of the Week: Kathleen Algire-Fedarcyk

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

How did you find your research opportunity?
Dr. Guzman-Rea sent a listing for a teaching assistant/research assistant and I jumped at the opportunity.

Who did you work with on this project?
I worked with Dr. Guzman-Rea for this project. Dr Guzman-Rea had applied for a Breaking Ground grant to change the current Social Work 200 course and an extension of the grant was performing research.

What academic background did you have before you started?
I have taken research courses but did not have any research experience. Within my social work classes, we read a lot about the necessity of social work research so I was actively looking for opportunities.

What was the hardest part about your research?
The hardest part about the research was understanding the qualitative process. Until my social work research class, I did not fully understand how to perform qualitative research.

What was the most unexpected thing?
I did not expect to actually be able to recognize the change in students but it was observable. It was really interesting to see students change the words they used or change the connotations of a word over the course of the semester. It was also interesting to see how the themes could be applied to any involvement activities, especially student organizations.

How does this research experience relate to your work in other classes?
Within social work, we are always talking about the change process and it was very interesting to see people go through part of that process in a short amount of time.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?
Talk to your professors and express your interest in research, even in fields where there doesn’t seem to be a lot happening in research, like social work.

What are your career goals?
I plan to pursue a MSW in macro social work. I would like to work in Baltimore City to pursue change based on social justice and economic equality. Currently, my interest is in forensic social work.

What are you doing next for research?
I am working with another social work professor to look at the effectiveness of advocacy within social agencies. Advocacy is a cornerstone of social work and yet it seems to lack a common definition and practice.

What else are you involved in on campus?
I am the president of SWSA and I have a grant writing internship at the Women’s Center through the Honors College.

New Digital Collection: Little Rock Nine Photographs

<Tagline>Images from the Mildred Grossman collection</Tagline>

The Albin O. Kuhn Library Special Collections recently digitized 66
photographs of the Little Rock Nine, the first African American students to
attend an integrated school in largely segregated
Arkansas. When the students enrolled at Little Rock Central High School in September, 1957, Arkansas
Governor Orval Faubus deployed the Arkansas National Guard to deny their
admission. Shortly thereafter, President Dwight D. Eisenhower federalized the
Guard and required them to facilitate the students’ entry. While attending the
school, the Little Rock Nine were subjected to discrimination, harassment, and
violence because of their race. Several students wrote books about their
experiences, and in 1995, President Bill Clinton awarded the Little Rock Nine
with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The Little Rock Nine photographs were taken by Mildred
Grossman, a noted teacher, unionist, and civil rights activist. Grossman’s
photographs focus on the students' trip to New York City in the summer of 1958,
where they accepted the New York Hotel Trades Council’s Better Race Relations
Award for their courage and historic achievements. The students also met with
elected officials, diplomats, and entertainers, and visited landmarks such as
the Statue of Liberty and the Coney Island amusement parks.
