Researcher of the Week: Melissa Crowhurst

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

Meet Melissa,

She is a Music Major, a Linehan Scholar and a URA Scholar. Her future plans are to become a music teacher in Maryland Public Schools. She has performed the National Anthem at both, the 2013 UMBC graduation at 1st Mariner Arena and at Orioles Park at Camden Yards on June 29th, 2013 before the Orioles/Yankees game!

How did you find your mentor for your research, scholarship, or artistic project?

I thought about the faculty members who knew me well, along with who would have an interest and be knowledgeable in my field of research. My voice professor, Janice Jackson and my Music History professor, Dr. Joseph Morin, were excellent mentors.

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?

I knew Italy would be the perfect place to study voice. My mentor, Dr. Morin helped me do some research into particular topics that I could research while studying voice. I began reading a book on Old Italian Singing and quickly realized how interesting the technique was. I was excited to research a technique that was not commonly known or taught in America.

Do you get course credit for this work?

Yes, 3 credits.

How much time do you put into it?

I had an hour voice lesson each day for three weeks in Florence, Italy. To prepare for my vocal lessons, I was required to practice for a few hours a day. In addition, I spent time reading books about Old Italian Singing and vocal techniques. I also kept a journal on my findings. My overall study and research took several hours a day.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?

Through my mentors and the Linehan Artist Summer Study Award.

What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA?

I am a rising senior studying Choral Music Education. I am a Linehan Scholar who has maintained a 3.95 GPA.

Was the application difficult to do?

To do the application properly, it takes time and research. Making sure your facts are presented neatly and with enough detail. In addition, one must carefully plan out their budget.

How much did your mentor help you with the application?

Explained particular parts of the application along with helping in the editing process.

What has been the hardest part about your research?

Reading and recording my findings. It took a lot of time to carefully read the many books that Florence University of the Arts had for me to research. It was a lot of information but all very useful.

What was the most unexpected thing?

My voice teacher. I expected I would learn a lot, but I did not anticipate how amazing and knowledgeable my teacher would me. I am in awe of how much I have learned'; the experience was very valuable.

How does your research relate to your work in other classes?

I am able to use my findings to better my own vocal technique and help other beginning vocal students at UMBC. In addition, as a future music teacher, I can use the learned techniques in my classroom.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Make sure to keep a journal or diary of your findings and experiences. Once you return home it can be hard to remember it all. Keeping a daily log will help you remember important details and data.

Read her abstract here...

Early Alerts Program

<Tagline>What it means for you</Tagline>

Hi Retrievers!

We are officially in the fourth week of the semester, which means it’s time to talk about one of the LRC’s lesser known programs! The Early Alert Program (formerly known as the First Year Intervention) is one of the many services that the Learning Resources Center offers UMBC students. The purpose of the program is to let students know that they are in danger of receiving a D or F in a certain course. From now through March 30th, you may receive an alert in myUMBC. So before you panic (and please don’t panic!), we are here to answer some of your questions about alerts!

Help! I got an alert in one of my courses! What should I do?

Uh oh! Your professor sent you an alert because you are in danger of receiving a D or an F in that course. The first thing you should do is to contact your professor to figure out what your exact grade is and what you can do about it. Next, visit our Action Resource Center to see if there’s any services at UMBC that can help you improve your grade.

If I’m in danger of receiving a D or an F, doesn’t that mean I could still be passing?

It is possible, but you could just barely be passing. If you are in a course that has a second level to it (such as MATH 150, or BIOL 141), you MUST receive a C or higher to move on to the next level. If you are trying to fulfill your GEP requirements with a course, you MUST have a C or higher for it to count. This is why we ask professors to let you know if you are in danger of receiving a D.

So remember, if you get an alert, don’t panic! Talk to your professor and figure out what you need to do to be successful in your course.

Did we miss a few questions? Ask them in the comments section below, or you can post them on our Facebook page!

Calling under grad researchers in life science

<Tagline>Join a national study</Tagline>

HI Life Sciences Researchers,

UMBC has been asked to help with identifying students to participate in the research project below. I hope you will participate if you fit the description. Recruitment of UMBC students for this study has been approved by the UMBC IRB (Y15ED26083).

Janet McGlynn
mcglynn@umbc.edu

Greetings!

We are conducting a study of how undergraduate researchers in the life sciences are mentored, called the “National study of undergraduate-postgraduate-faculty mentoring triads.” This is the first large-scale study of how undergraduate researchers are affected by being mentored by a graduate or postdoctoral researcher and a faculty member. The results from this study will help design effective undergraduate research experiences, which are critical for developing the next generation of scientists, for developing students’ understanding of what science is and how science is done, and for retaining students in sciences. In order to accomplish this, we need to collect data from complete “triads” – undergraduate researchers and their graduate / postdoc and faculty supervisors.

If you:

· Have conducted at least one semester or summer of undergraduate research in the life sciences within the past two years, AND

· Worked with a graduate student or postdoctoral researcher,

We want to hear about your experience!

Your participation will involve completing an online survey about your research experience and your interactions with the graduate / postdoctoral researcher and the faculty member who heads the research. You will also be asked to provide the names and email addresses for the graduate student or postdoc and faculty member you work/ed with so that we can survey them about their experiences working with you.

The survey will take about 30 minutes to complete, and you will receive a $20 check for your participation.

We would like to stress that all of your responses will be kept confidential, which means that your name and any identifying information about you will not be included in any report about the study results and your responses will not be shared with the graduate / postdoctoral researcher or the faculty member with whom you work/ed. It is important that we hear from undergraduates who have both positive and negative experiences so that we can understand the factors that make undergraduate research experiences effective and enjoyable. Your decision to participate is voluntary and will not affect you in any way.

If you are willing to participate, please follow this link to the survey: https://utexas.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_eerSnHldvhhlOfP

To ensure confidentiality, please take the survey on your own computer or Wi-Fi device.

If you have any questions or would like additional information, please contact us at mentors@austin.utexas.edu or at the numbers below.

Thank you for considering this request-

Dr. Erin Dolan (512-232-8346) and Dr. Melissa Aikens (512-232-9029)

Texas Institute for Discovery Education in Science
College of Natural Sciences, The University of Texas at Austin
