Complexity Across Disciplines (CAD) Summer Research Opp at Boise State Uni- Department of Math The program is a nine week summer program in which undergraduate students experience independent research in combinatorics, number theory, algebra, and game theory. Sounds interesting? There's more!

Benefits will include:

  1. Receive a stipend of $4000
  2. Free on campus housing and an allowance for meals.
  3. Receive three undergraduate college credits from Boise State University.
  4. Attend guest lectures by mathematicians and scientists.
  5. Participate in scientific seminars addressing mathematical techniques used in information security and genome remodelling.
  6. Participate in professional development workshops addressing research presentation skills, scientific writing and ethics.
  7. Be part of the summer community of collaborators, students and faculty, from all STEM disciplines and programs on campus.
  8. Experience mentoring high school fellows of the NASA-based Idaho Science and Aerospace Scholars Program.
  9. Opportunities to present summer research results at the 2017 Joint Mathematics Meetings.
  10. Opportunity to present at the 2016 Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research (ICUR).
  11. Enjoy the various cultural and social activities in and around Boise.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicants must not yet have graduated with an undergraduate degree.
  2. Only U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States and its possessions are eligible for fellowships from the National Science Foundation. We welcome foreign undergraduates attending a US educational institution and who have funding from other sources to also apply to our program.

This program is designed for students majoring in marine science, ecology, environmental science, biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, and mathematics.

During the 12-week program, each student works with a mentor on an individual research project at one of the two marine labs at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Sciences located on the Chesapeake Bay:

Research areas include:

  • Estuarine processes
  • Benthic environment
  • Climate change
  • Physical oceanography
  • Contaminants
  • Fisheries
  • Molecular biology and genetics
  • Environmental chemistry
  • Submerged aquatic vegetation
  • Modelling and analysis

BENEFITS INCLUDE:

ELIGIBILITY:
  • U.S. Citizens or permanent residents
  • Completed at least two years of study towards a bachelors' degree
  • Preference is given to rising seniors

California Academy of Scientists: San Francisco

The California Academy of Sciences announces an internship in biological illustration. The internship is open to currently enrolled undergraduate students interested in developing illustration techniques related to biological specimens. The intern will work with one or more Academy scientists to develop illustrations that may be used in scientific publications. The internship is integrated with the activities of the Summer Systematics Institute (SSI), and the successful applicant will be encouraged to participate in all SSI activities with fellow interns, including lectures, seminars, presentations, and social activities.

The California Academy of Sciences is a natural history museum supporting research and collection activities in the disciplines of Anthropology, Botany, Entomology, Herpetology, Ichthyology, Invertebrate Zoology, Ornithology, Mammalogy, and Paleobiology.

The Hillcrest Building, UMBC's first administration building, was a center for student recreational activities including sororities, fraternities, game clubs, and The Rathskeller, also known as "The Ratt," a student lounge/ bar situated in the basement of Hillcrest. The Rathskeller was open for 34 years, providing UMBC students with a place for drinking, dancing, eating, and hanging out outside of classes. It eventually closed in 2000, shortly followed by the demolition of the Hillcrest Building in 2007 to make way for new parking spaces and residential halls.

Seattle University Mathematics Early Research Program The department of mathematics at Seattle University is looking for undergraduate students, particularly rising sophomores, juniors, and community college students for a paid summer research program. They are seeking students who are interested in working on enumerative combinatorics or knot theory (look these up, they are great subjects, you may be interested once you learn about them). Selected students will engage in original research and attend talks hosted by mathematicians while living in the heart of Seattle.

Requirements:
  • Citizens or permanent residents of the United States
  • Full-time undergraduate students
  • A course in linear algebra is encouraged (but not required)
  • First-generation college students, minority students, and women are encouraged to apply

Students will receive training at Colby College in social survey and ecological methods, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and written and oral communication skills. After that, students will travel to Ethiopia to conduct fieldwork with faculty mentors from Colby College.
