    <div class="html-content"><h3>Cardiovascular Research: Engineering a Translational Experience (CREATE)<br>May 30, 2017 - August 4, 2017</h3><p>The Penn State Department of Biomedical Engineering's Research Experience for Undergraduates Students (REU) program, "Cardiovascular Research: Engineering a Translational Experience (CREATE)," runs May 30 - August 4, 2017 and is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. </p><p>The program provides a variety of research opportunities for undergraduate students in cardiovascular analysis.</p><p>Students will have an opportunity to join a number of cutting-edge research teams that focus on furthering the understanding of cardiovascular diseases and developing medical interventions to treat related conditions. Research projects will emphasize the development of implantable devices, artificial gene therapy and drug delivery systems.</p><p>Students participating in the program will engage in a wide range of biomedical engineering research and participate in weekly group activities. These actives provide an overview of current technologies and expose students to the research challenges in each area.</p><p>Students will be challenged to utilize a creative skill set to innovate new solutions for the betterment of human health and society.</p><p>Applications for the Penn State Department of Biomedical Engineering CREATE REU program are currently being accepted. We welcome applications from current Penn State undergraduate students as well as undergraduate students from outside institutions, particularly those enrolled in science and engineering programs and those maintaining a strong interest in cardiovascular research. Travel assistance and a research stipend are provided to eligible students.</p></div>

<Title>Researcher of the Week: Joel Tyson</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Meet Joel,</div><div>He is a Biochemical Engineering major and student researcher for Johns Hopkins University's Institute for Nanobiotechnology summer internship. He worked in the Neurodegeneration lab of Dr. Ted Dawson in the Hopkins Medical School's Institute of Cell Engineering. His research used a novel approach to measuring the endocytosis of pathological α-synuclien- a process known as a cause of Parkinson's Disease. These measurements allowed the mapping of the functional domains in a receptor thought to be central to Parkinson's pathology. </div><div><br></div><div>Last summer he participated in several research labs as part of the Mid-Atlantic Summer Nanotechnology Internship Program. He contributed to projects using nanoparticles, nanoelectrodes, and self-assembled monolayers in biological applications. </div><div><br></div><div>Joel is in the Honor's College and participates in D.I.Y. research in synthetic biology at the Baltimore Underground Science Space year-round. In his spare time, he composes music. </div><div><br></div><div>His future plans are to gain experience in tissue engineering and pursue a PhD in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on neurology.</div><div><br></div><div><div><strong>How did you find out about this opportunity? Was there a formal application process?</strong> </div><div>The opportunity was posted by Professor Laura LeMire at CCBC. There was a formal application including a reference and transcript along with an interview with UMBC professors.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Who did you work with on this project? </strong></div><div>There were three principal investigators to whom I addressed questions and from whom I got initial direction: Dr. Marie-Christine Daniel-Onuta and Dr. Ryan White at UMBC and Dr Mark Griep at ARL. I worked most closely with UMBC chemistry graduate students Brian Szychowski, Lauren Schoukroun Barnes, and Florika Macazo; UMBC postgrad Dr. Juan Liu and ARL engineer Travis Tumlin. I also had partners from CCBC in each rotation: Shane Folk, Jennifer Betley and Hinesh Padhiar. Dr. Paul Smith and Dr. Stephen Mang also taught several classes and discussions about nanoscience and science in general. I am incredibly grateful for the time and knowledge given to me by all these great minds.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Was this your first research experience?</strong></div><div>I had been participating in the Baltimore Underground Science Space, a community lab, for several months before this, working under the guidance of Dr. Thomas Burkett.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Do you get course credit for this work or get paid? How much time do you put into it?</strong></div><div>This internship was fantastically funded by the NSF, so we were paid. I averaged 35-40 hours a week.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>What academic background did you have before you started?</strong></div><div>I had completed one year at CCBC which included classes in biology, engineering, math and chemistry.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>How did you learn what you needed to know to be successful in this summer project?</strong></div><div>I did a lot of reading. I read papers from the labs I worked in, as well as papers that may have informed the current work of the lab. I also did a fair amount of reading online and in hardcopy textbooks to get up to speed on subjects like organic chemistry, electrochemistry and nanotechnology.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>What has been the hardest part about your work this summer?</strong></div><div>The hardest part was keeping my head above water when integrating so many different subjects: biology, physics, engineering, and chemistry. For me, once the fields being dealt with are complex enough to touch on quantum mechanics (as is the case with nanotechnology) it’s easy for me to misunderstand. Figuring out what is useful when applied to different subjects is relatively challenging.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>What was the most unexpected thing?</strong></div><div>The most unexpected thing was the slow pace. To do cutting edge science correctly takes a lot of patience.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>How does this research experience relate to your course work?</strong></div><div>In one sense I used concepts learned in my course work every day, so applying course work was integral to an understanding of regular procedures and directions. However, there is a level of deep inquiry that just can’t be addressed by lower level course work. In that sense it’s not related to coursework at all because all research has an unknown ending.</div><div>What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research? </div><div>Research facilities and projects are a great way to break out of the lecture-exam (lecture-exam, lecture-exam...) cycle and feel like you’re contributing something. It can take some real patience and persistence to delve deeply, but that can be said of anything that is worthwhile. And maybe research or laboratories are not for you, but it’s pretty hard to know that unless you try it out.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>What are your career goals?</strong></div><div>I am interested in working in the intersection of human biology and technology, especially in relation neurology, but I am excited about all fields of biomedical engineering.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>What else are you involved in on campus?</strong></div><div>I will be attending UMBC for the first time in the fall as a transfer student. I am not sure what I will be involved in yet, but I plan to be tutoring in some capacity. </div></div><div><br></div><div>Read more about his research here...</div></div>

<Title>Researcher of the Week: Victoria Taylor</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Meet Victoria, </div><div>She is a <a href="http://umbc.edu/engineering/cbe/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Chemical Engineering major</a>, a <a href="http://biology.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Biology minor</a> and is also a <a href="http://www.umbc.edu/undergrad_ed/research/URA/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">URA Scholar</a>. She is the treasurer for the <a href="http://osl.umbc.edu/orgs/detail/540" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">American Institute of Chemical Engineers</a> and a member of <a href="http://osl.umbc.edu/orgs/detail/666" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Hooplah</a>. This past summer, she worked as an <a href="http://www.umbc.edu/orientation/leaders.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Orientation Peer Advisor and a Welcome Week Woolie</a>. Previously, She was the treasurer for the <a href="http://osl.umbc.edu/orgs/detail/346" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Wushu and Tai-Chi Club</a>.</div><div><br></div><div><div><strong>How did you find your mentor for your research project?</strong></div><div>During Spring 2013, I checked in with my advisor, Dr. Bayles, and expressed interest in doing research. She knew that I was on the biotechnology track for chemical engineering so she suggested that I look into Dr. Marten’s lab, which mainly deals with fungal biology and industrial uses of filamentous fungi. Her guidance was essential in my placement in Dr. Marten’s lab.</div><div><br></div><div>When I met Dr. Marten, I demonstrated my enthusiasm for learning about research and he graciously allowed me into his lab. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with a team and I’ve been a part of his lab since June 2013.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Is this your first independent research project?</strong></div><div>Yes, this is my first independent project. Although this URA project is technically independent, its success is reliant on not only me and Nicholas Rogers. Without our team of hardworking undergraduates, our project would never meet an end.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?</strong></div><div>Nicholas applied for the URA the previous year, in order to fund the preceding project. This project yielded products which are integral in our current project. When I joined MartenLab, Nicholas had told me about this program and we applied for it together.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>What has been the hardest part about your research? </strong></div><div>The hardest part of our research would be figuring out where something went wrong. Sometimes, finding a solution to a problem is easy to pinpoint but most of the time, it is incredibly difficult. However, when a problem is solved, it is satisfying to know that the project can continue.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>What was the most unexpected thing?</strong></div><div>The most unexpected thing about my research is the cohesiveness of our team. We are able to cooperate well with each other to move our project forward with minimal conflict. Their perspective and work on our project is essential.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research? </strong></div><div>Seek out research opportunities and keep a positive attitude. Browse departmental profiles, email advisors and talk to professors, all under the assumption that a lab position is attainable. I certainly would not have the chance to work in a lab if I didn’t believe I could and if I simply stayed in my room. By taking the initiative, my fate in research was not left to chance and I was able to be involved with a field I never considered before.</div></div><div><br></div><div>Read her abstract here...</div></div>

<Title>Summer Research Opportunity in Engineering; Starts June 22</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The Northwestern University Materials Research Science &amp; Engineering Center offers a<span><span><a rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)</a></span> program</span> over a 9-week period each summer. <br><br>The NU-Materials Research Science and Engineering Center is an interdisciplinary program focused on multi-functional nanoscale material structures.  Over 28 faculty from 5 different departments are involved.  REU students will have the opportunity to contribute to a research project led by a center faculty member and will participate in interdisciplinary research group meetings, expanding their science and engineering experience into a range of fields.  Students with an interest in nanomaterials and majoring in a science or engineering field are encouraged to apply.  Each student will be assigned to a graduate student or post-doctoral associate mentor who will work closely with them.</p><p>At the end of the REU program, the participants will write a technical paper and give a 15-minute oral presentation on their research at a symposium open to the public. Other program activities include a field trip to a national or industrial lab, a beach party for social networking, a panel discussion on graduate school admissions, and seminars by Northwestern faculty and graduate students.</p></div>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>Interdisciplinary Studies at UMBC invites undergraduate
    students of engineering, visual arts, environmental science, journalism, and interdisciplinary
    studies to submit a design proposal for a kinetic sculpture (a bicycle powered
    work of art). </span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>Interdisciplinary Studies will offer a $250
    prize to the winning design for a kinetic sculpture that will be built by a
    UMBC team of students and entered into the Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race. To explore themes of sustainability, the working title for
    the kinetic sculpture is the “Trashmonster Upcycle.” Our goal is to put the
    notion of upcycling ("</span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upcycling" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>converting waste materials
    or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for
    better environmental value</span></a><span>") </span><span>into
    motion by collecting discarded materials (also known as trash) that could be

    primary construction materials?</span></p><p><span>3. Do you
    propose incorporating regular bicycle frames or starting from “scratch” in a

Through this one-on-one partnership, participants will gain theoretical knowledge and practical training in academic research and scientific experimentation. CU LSAMP-REU was developed to aid in the retention of traditionally underrepresented minority groups in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).</p></div>

<Title>MURF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>The MURF program aims to increase the participation of underrepresented students (such as African American, Hispanic, and Native American, females who are underrepresented in their discipline, or first-generation college students) in science and engineering Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. programs and to make Caltech's programs more visible to students not traditionally exposed to Caltech.</span><br>
    <br><span>Eligibility: Students must be current sophomores
    through non-graduating seniors and must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required.</span><br><br>
    <span>Competitive applicants will have completed sophomore-level courses in desired research field, have demonstrated through academic and/or co-curricular activities a passion for research, and can articulate how their research interests align with Caltech's research areas. The most competitive applicants will have prior research experience.</span><br><br><span>Support: MURF students will receive a $6000 award for the ten-week program. An additional $500 housing and travel supplement will be provided.</span><br><br>
