Considered to be "Bio for Majors," this class is designed to be a rigorous preparation for upper level Biology courses. However, BIOL majors should not be the only ones on the look out for this class--it's recommended for CHEM education and it can be a prerequisite for BIOL 302, which is required for most med schools and dental schools. So whether you're a future researcher on the Human Genome Project, or you're the next medical prodigy, BIOL 141 is a class you want to succeed in. Thankfully, there's tons of academic support on our campus to help you do well!

SI-PASS: If you're in BIOL 141 and you don't know what SI-PASS is, now is a good time to find out! Led by one of the senior lecturers in the Biology department, the Biology Learning Center has its own peer tutors that can help students in any core biology course. Tutoring is one-on-one and very flexible--students can contact the tutors directly and make arrangements to meet with them on their own and as often as they'd like. The Biology Learning Center is located in the Biological Sciences Building, Room 011! Stop by and get help today.

LRC Appointment Tutoring: Students who want help in BIOL 141 can sign up for weekly, small group tutoring with a certified peer tutor! This is recommended for students who could benefit from consistent support in the course. You can sign up for weekly appointment tutoring on our website, or you can click the sign up button on our Facebook page!

BIOL 141 TAs: Teaching Assistants are great resources!
Researcher of the Week: DeVenna Dixon

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

Meet DeVenna,

She is an Environmental Studies major and an URACADian*. Devenna is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Lambda Phi chapter. She would like to continue her research regarding human/environment interaction and how they impact each other. Specifically, how African American’s are impacted by the environment and vice versa. Her future plans will be to join the Peace Corps.

She is will be creating a film that will explore “What does it mean to be Black in America?” Devenna will conduct interviews with a variety of subjects (known and unknown volunteers from the street) before and after the 2015 Baltimore uprising. The purpose of this research is to shed light on the reality of the Black American experience. Moreover, the ultimate goal was to gather individual feelings, to prove that stereotypes should not be used, and that everyone has a different understanding of what it means to be Black.

Read more about her research here…

Researcher of the Week: Sigfredo Soto

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

Meet Sigfredo,

He is a Physics major and an URA Scholar. Sigfredo transferred from Anne Arundel Community College with an Associates of Arts in Communications. He is an advocate for undergraduate research. "Take the opportunity if you can find it. It is eye opening and satisfying when you reach personal milestones. Find a mentor that you feel comfortable with. Take it as seriously as you would school work."

His research explores the skies above and is trying to understand the current mismatch between our observational and theoretical capabilities in the effort to understand the gamma-ray variable emission of blazars coming from the vicinity of a black hole. The goal of his research is to develop realistic numerical simulations to model the variable gamma-ray emission of luminous blazars, powerful relativistic jets emanating from the vicinity of the supermassive black holes found in the centers of active galaxies.

They evaluated this sensor by studying the interactions between the FK506-binding protein (FKBP) and the FKBP12-rapamycin binding (FRB) domain in the presence of various small molecules such as rapamycin. FKBP bound rapamycin forms complexes with the FRB domain of mTOR, which is an essential regulator of cell growth and survival.

Read more about Sarah’s research here...
