Amelia Hallworth is your Math Lab Tutor

<Tagline>Oh, and she tutors Genetics too!</Tagline>

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a senior, biology major, an Honors College member, and a math minor. I am a huge nerd and am also involved with research on campus in Dr. Lu's lab. After I graduate (this semester!) I am going to graduate school for a PhD in microbiology.

Tell us about how you are involved on campus.

I head the Lab Tours Committee for Biology Council of Majors, as well as being involved with UMBC's Club Fencing team.

How and why did you get involved in being a tutor?

I have been tutoring since Fall 2014. I had enjoyed helping to tutor friends unofficially throughout high school, so I decided to apply.

What is your favorite thing about being a tutor?

I love seeing the "Aha!" moment when a student finally understands something they have been struggling with. It's really exciting to watch students who came in very confused start to understand and work on problems independently.

Why should students utilize the tutoring?

I think the tutors try to be really helpful to students who are struggling, but I might be biased. Also, tutoring can be great even for students who aren't struggling. Trying to explain things to fellow tutees is a great way to cement your understanding. If nothing else, it's free and easy to get, so you've only wasted a little time if it doesn't work out.

What advice would you give students about how to prepare for a tutoring session?

Figure out what you want to get out of the session ahead of time, and try to be clear about it. It helps me to know if you want me to answer the occasional question and check your solutions or if you need me to explain concepts and give lots of support in solving problems. Bringing notes/textbooks and the questions you want to go over is key.

And if you can't figure out exactly what you're struggling with, that's okay too! I'm happy to work with you to try to figure it out.

When and where can someone work with you through the Learning Resources Center?

I am in the Math Lab Mondays from 9am-10 and Fridays from 9am-1pm. I also do appointment tutoring for Genetics on Wednesday mornings.

Researcher of the Week: Junaid Bhatti

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

He is a Biology major and an independent researcher. He is also a Teaching Assistant for both Biology 300 and 303, as well as a tutor for the Math Lab and Writing Center. He plans to attend medical school, become a doctor, and ultimately make a positive impact on the world. His advice on beginning in research, "Get started early!!! My biggest regret about research is that I didn’t get started as early as I should have. Working in a lab is a very rewarding experience that you learn a lot from. Getting involved early allows you to maximize what you gain and gives you enough time to pursue any long-term projects. Time is an invaluable resource and this is especially true with research."

Junaid's research will explore the efforts that will pave the way for the next-generation applications in human regenerative medicine. For more than a century, scientists have been captivated by the regenerative capabilities of the planarian flatworm, which can regenerate a full body from almost any type of amputation. To understand the mechanisms controlling this extraordinary ability, research approaches based on surgical, pharmacological, and genetic manipulations have been used extensively to produce a huge dataset of experimental results disseminated through the literature. The rise of sophisticated machine learning algorithms and computational power has brought upon a novel way of studying these fascinating creatures.

Read more about his research here…

Researcher of the Week: Stephanie Milani

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

Meet Stephanie,

She is a double major student working on her degrees in Computer Science and Psychology. She is a member of the Honors College, the Vice President of the Computer Science Education club, a member of the Retriever Robotics Club, a CWIT affiliate, and the Curriculum Development Coordinator for the Creative Coders Program. She is also a Research Assistant for CS Matters in Maryland and a Research Assistant for the Multi-Agent Planning and Learning (MAPLE) lab. Previously, she was the Secretary of QUMBC. Her future ambitions are to continue researching Artificial Intelligence or a related field and to continue with outreach in computer science education.

Stephanie's research will explore a recently developed method of hierarchical planning: a hierarchy of abstract Markov decision processes (AMDPs). AMDPs seek to address the immensely challenging problems that decision-making agents face when operating in large environments to solve complex tasks. A hierarchy of AMDPs provides a framework for decomposing such problems into distinct, related subtasks. Her previous tasks for research in this area were to design an AMDP hierarchy for a house-building domain and to collaborate with her lab members to research and write a paper combining the R-MAX algorithm with AMDPs. Currently, she is working with her lab members to research and write a paper on constructing and reasoning over composite objects.

Read more about her research here…

Need help? Meet with LRC's Study Skills Specialist

<Tagline>Jordan White</Tagline>

Not sure how to get on course with your study habits this semester?

Need help identifying what is challenging you?

Want resources to help you be more successful at UMBC?

You can make an appointment with Jordan White, the Study Skills Specialist at UMBC’s Learning Resources Center.

Jordan White

“I graduated from UMBC with a degree in Mathematics, and I have been working as an adjunct instructor for the Mathematics and Statistics Department since 2015, focusing on developmental mathematics (Math 104, 106, 155). That same year I started creating math content in classes for Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youths. In 2016 I also became an instructor for that program teaching their Competitive Mathematics Prep class. In 2017, I started working with UMBC’s Learning Resources Center as their Study Skills Specialist.

As a Study Skills Specialist, I have meetings with students aimed at identifying their academic challenges, and identifying resources aimed at forming a plan for their academic success. I am very passionate about this and incredibly excited. We want students to become more independent learners, to be aware and use their resources, to build life skills. Those ideas are the essence of the meetings we hold with students and everything we do here.”

How to make a Study Skills Appointment

During this appointment we can discuss the areas that are impeding your academic success and help you create a plan to utilize strategies and resources to improve your academic performance.

Please use this link to select an appointment time, at least 24 hours in advance. Choose one of the grey appointment blocks and then click save.

If you need to cancel your appointment, please go to your MyUMBC Google Calendar, find the appointment you registered for, and delete it. This will open up the slot for another student. You can then use the link above to schedule another time.

We want to help you achieve your academic goals this semester, and we look forward to meeting with you.

The Learning Resources Center’s services are free of charge and open to all enrolled students.
