<Tagline>Presentation on cultural appropriation of the term "ninja"</Tagline>

Come see the results of Crysshelda's fieldwork in Japan!

Ninja: Japan’s Soft Power And American Appropriation

Crysshelda Kosasih, Asian Studies
Mentor: Meredith Oyen

Poster, 1-2:30pm, UC Ballroom

American society has used the term ninja without a second thought, but how have these shadowy figures become a tool to spread Japanese influence? The postwar occupation of Japan sparked interest in Japanese culture and made way for the “Cool Japan” movement that would develop in later decades. This project will discuss whether or not the general use of the term ‘ninja’ is or can be considered cultural appropriation as it is so far removed from its cultural background. The main method of determining cultural appropriation will be the contrast and comparison between Japan’s and America’s use of the ninja. This research project will use historical and cultural sources in English and Japanese, such as Japanamerica: How Japanese Pop Culture Has Invaded the U.S.by Roland Kelts, 「The Ninja - 忍者ってナンジャ！？」(English title: The Ninja - Who were they?) as well as field work in Japan to determine just how ninjas have crept into the global vocabulary and are now almost synonymous with the idea of deadly silent efficiency.

Teresa Whittemore @URCAD XXIII

<Tagline>Wed April 24 | Dance Cube | Time: 11 – 11:15 a.m.</Tagline>

URCAD Sneak Peek!

“When Eve and Eve Bit the Apple,” is a duet choreographed by Teresa Whittemore, which premiered in UMBC’s 2018 Fall Dance Showcase. This work focuses on identity, its components, and the rejection of its permanence, specifically in the lives of queer people. It illustrates and challenges the perception that one characteristic or lifestyle-choice prohibits the presence another. The sound-score for my dance includes excerpts from an essay by Caitlin O’Keefe, in which she describes her experiences living as an evangelical Christian and a lesbian, and how she struggled to accommodate the union of church, homosexual love, and self. Through use of intricate partnering work and gaze, dancers Sarah Brewer and Michelle Ye embody this conflict. It opens with a solo performed by Brewer, whose movements represent a personal battle between what is expected and what is intriguing. Later, Ye enters, embodying the intriguing, liberated lifestyle that Brewer pursues. The dancers’ exchanges and movements allow an audience to observe the restrictions Brewer feels, drawn both to her faith and her sexuality. Labeling queer people as “different” serves as means to isolate and marginalize them, which influences both their experiences and agency in their own identity, as illustrated in this work.

Please come see her performance on the 24th of April in the Dance Cube at 11 a.m.

Also, I am part of the table tennis club.

How and why did you get involved in being a tutor?

During my freshman year I would help my friends with their homework for math classes and study for math exams. I enjoyed helping other people and sharing my passion for math, so I decided to apply to be a tutor to help other students on campus, too.

What is your favorite thing about being a tutor?

My favorite thing about being a tutor is when something clicks for the student I’m helping and they get excited about what they’re doing. It’s rewarding to see students make progress and feel confident about what they’re doing.

Why should students utilize the tutoring?

It’s completely free and tutors are available almost all day. It’s also not a big commitment if someone is nervous about it. You show up and leave whenever you want. Also it’s useful to get help from tutors may explain concepts in a way that’s easier for other students to learn because they’ve recently gone through the class.

What advice would you give students about how to prepare for a tutoring session?

Bring specific topics or questions that you’d like help with. Also, bring all of your notes and/or your textbook.

When and where can someone work with you through the Learning Resources Center?

I work at the Math and Science Tutoring Center (MASTC) in the library on Mondays 12pm-2pm and 5pm-7pm, and Tuesdays and Thursdays 2pm-5pm. I tutor almost every math class up to 301 and CMSC 201. For a full schedule of everyone, you can visit the LRC website. The MASTC right past the security and all the way to the right when you walk in.

Vincent Brown, BIOL, CHEM, PHYS tutor

<Tagline>Pre-Med BIOL major who loves Sci Fi, Comics and SPACE!</Tagline>

Tell us a
    little about yourself.

My name is Vincent Brown and I am a transfer student from Barry
University in Miami, FL where I played on the Men’s Basketball team my freshman
year. Now I am a Junior/Senior Premed, Biology major with a minor in Ancient
Studies. I have lots of interests in things from Comics, Science-Fiction, and
Anime to Ancient Civilizations and Space!

Tell us
    about how you are
    involved on campus.

Besides tutoring Biology, Organic Chemistry and Physics in the LRC, I am
on the E-Board of UMBC’s Premedical Society as the club’s webmaster. I am also
a member of the Biology Council of Majors and the Ancient Studies Council of
Majors. In addition to this, I am a teaching assistant (TA) for Dr. Eisenmann’s
BIOL 302 Genetics class this semester and I am currently trying to become a
Conversation Partner for International Students in the English Language
    Institute.

How and why
    did you get involved
    in being a tutor?

I became a tutor during the Fall 2018 semester after I wanted to find a
way to get more involved on campus. I utilized tutoring in many of my classes
and found it very helpful so I wanted to be able to help other students just as
    I have been helped.

What is
your favorite thing about being a tutor?

My favorite thing about tutoring is helping students find the way to
learn or study that works best for them and seeing the light bulb go off inside
their heads. Giving the students the ability to find the right answers on their
own and giving them the confidence to do so is also very rewarding.

Why should
    students utilize the tutoring?

Students should use tutoring because it is one of the best resources on
campus, plus it’s free! Tutoring is beneficial for all students whether they are
struggling with the material or are doing fine in the class. I say this because
tutoring offers more than just helping you understand a topic from class. It
can help you develop new study habits/techniques and learn how to find answers
to your questions on your own, as well as serve as a place to simply get some
    one-on-one attention.

What advice
    would you give
students about how to prepare for a tutoring session?

The best
way to be prepared for a tutoring session is to have questions already
prepared! Some advice for bringing questions would be that you should have at
least one specific question/example for every general/broad question that you
bring because this will allow the session to happen more smoothly and the tutor
will be able to spend more time helping you because you won’t be stuck during
the session trying to find a problem to work on.

When and
where can someone work with you through
    the Learning Resources Center?

For
any student that needs help in BIOL 100, 123, 141, 142, 302, or 303, CHEM
351/352 and PHYS 111/112, I am available on Mondays 11-12, 1-2 and Fridays
12-2. I am also trying to determine if I can tutor any other hours so I may
have more availability in the future. You can schedule an appointment through
the StudyTree app, online through the LRC website or in person at Sherman 345.
