Good Morning Retrievers!

We are in the midst of Tutor Appreciation Week and part 3 of our "Get to Know" series! Today, we're highlighting one of our amazing tutors from the Writing Center. Justin Sherman -- or "one of the Justins," as he says, is a sophomore majoring in computer science. Let's get to know him!

Tell us a little about yourself.

Hi! I'm Justin and I'm a sophomore majoring in computer science. My interests include iOS reverse engineering and debuggers + compilers.

Why did you decide to become a tutor?

I got involved in being a tutor because I'm introverted, and this was a great opportunity for me to meet new people.

What is your favorite thing about being a tutor?

My favorite thing about being a tutor is talking to all sorts of people I wouldn't have if I hadn't taken up this opportunity.

Why should students utilize the tutoring?

There's really no reason not to utilize the tutoring because it's free. You've got nothing to lose if you drop by for half an hour (even if the session doesn't go as well as you'd may have hoped).

What advice would you give students about how to prepare for a tutoring session?

There is one thing I ask of students before you come in, and I'm sure I speak for all the tutors in the Writing Center, please be somewhat organized. We're here to help, and a mess of unstapled papers on the table doesn't do much to help the session.

When and where can someone work with you through the Writing Center?

I work 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays if you want to drop by and see me. As a Sondheim scholar, I serve as a peer mentor and chairperson of the steering committee. As a peer mentor I am able to assist freshmen students acclimate to UMBC campus life, take advantage of its many opportunities and resources and provide support to help ensure academic success. As the chairperson of the Sondheim Scholars steering committee I am able to collaborate with my fellow committee members to provide growth, learning and service opportunities for both the scholars and the program. I have also volunteered at the Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents (RICA) and College Gardens through service learning practicums with the Shriver Center.

How did you become an SI PASS leader? Why did you want to?

My SI PASS journey started with a nomination from a past math professor. After that nomination, I applied and interviewed for the position. I was offered the position, however, I really chose to be involved as an SI PASS leader once I considered the great experiences in the SI PASS sessions as a freshman. I found them to be very helpful and appreciated all I had learned from my SI PASS leader. Reflecting on those experiences inspired me to want to give to others in the same way.

What is your favorite thing about being an SI PASS leader ?

My favorite thing about being an SI PASS leader is being a part of the moment when a student discovers he or she really “gets it.” The student’s face transforms from a concentrated frown to raised eyebrows and brightened eyes of enlightenment. That is the moment I can tell a student understands a concept with which they were previously struggling.

Why should students utilize SI PASS sessions?

Students should utilize the SI PASS sessions to help them understand a subject for which they are having difficulty or simply want to practice and improve their skills. I make this recommendation based on my own personal experiences. In the spring 2019 semester, I was enrolled in CHEM 102 and it was difficult.--to say the least. However, after regularly attending the CHEM 102 SI PASS sessions, I was able to successfully grasp and understand the material and complete the course (with a nice final grade!).

Now, as a SI PASS leader, I am able to facilitate sessions with the understanding of, first, what it is like to really be a student who really needs academic help; and second, what is like to receive the help I needed from someone who is genuinely committed to my success.

I know there are many SI PASS leaders who are just as committed to student success as my SI PASS leaders were last year and I include myself among them. Students should utilize SI PASS sessions because they will get the support they need from someone who cares.

How should students prepare for a SI PASS session?

The best ways to prepare for a SI PASS session are to come with an open mind and have the belief that learning the material IS possible. It is okay to not have questions when arriving, as sessions are for practicing as much as they are for clarifying confusing areas. Coming to sessions with the mindset of always learning something will help you get the most out of your time in SI PASS.

Sierra holds her MATH 155 SI PASS sessions on Mondays from 4:00 - 4:50 p.m. in SOND 204 and Wednesdays from 4:00 - 4:50 p.m. in Math/Psych 012

Sierra is another one of our great tutors and SI/PASS leaders we are highlighting during National Tutor Appreciation Week, and we appreciate her sharing her passion for SI PASS with us. Remember to follow us on myUMBC to see more in our Get to Know series!

Researcher of the Week: Zachary Nicholas

<Tagline>Pressures on Parents of Children with Special Needs</Tagline>

Zachary Nicholas is a current URA Scholar, a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and an Anthropology and Biology major (Dec. '19)

Title of your research project: Deciphering Cultural Roles and Social Pressure on Parents of Children with Special Needs

Describe your project: I will be examining what social factors influence decisions made by parents of children with special needs. I will also be looking at how the world around children with special needs is typically regulated by people without special needs and how that may be biased and affect their development and childhood.

Who is your mentor for your project?

Dr. Bambi Chapin, Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Health Administration and Policy

How did you find your mentor? Why did you choose them?

Dr. Chapin has been my faculty advisor since I transferred to UMBC in fall 2017. In fall 2019, I was in one of Dr. Chapin’s classes and that is when I realized that our research interests were similar. I thought she would be the right person to oversee my project with her extensive knowledge on parent-child relationships and children’s cognitive development.

How did you become interested in this project?

I have always been interested in topics like genetics, genomics, heredity, and human history. While trying to narrow down on my future career choices, I was shadowing prenatal genetic counselors. With each case, I wanted to know what was going through the parents’ minds when either there was a high risk for their child having a genetic disease or their child was diagnosed. There seemed to be bountiful layers and possibilities on what affected those parents when it came to making a decision to either get tested to know if the child has a disease for sure, or not to risk doing a procedure that causes a higher miscarriage rate. The variability in parents’ responses is what got my mind wanting to know more on the subject.

What has been the hardest part about your research/What was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?

The most unexpected aspects of this project have been how difficult it is to get permission to conduct qualitative observational research in a medical setting and how effortlessly the subject and focus of your project can change based off the data that is produced.

What has been the most rewarding part?

When the parents, siblings, and health practitioners of the children with special needs get a chance to express their thoughts about the subject it is beautiful to watch. It is something that is a huge part of their lives and is also something that they are passionate about, yet they rarely can talk freely about how they feel on the subject.

How will you disseminate your research?

I will conduct a PowerPoint presentation at URCAD and plan to publish my paper as a short ethnography.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Do not be afraid to put in extra work when it comes to your project. It will be a reflection of you and will be a time where you can explore your academic interests in depth.

What are your career goals?

After graduating from UMBC, I plan to attain my Ph.D. in Genetics. I would like to either become a professor or work in the Biological Science Research Industry.

Check out other URA Scholars and their research projects:

https://ur.umbc.edu/ura/current-scholars/

I am also currently working in Dr. Lobos lab doing RNA sequencing research with bacteria and planetarium to further develop mathematical models.

Why did you decide to be a tutor?

Being able to see students grow in their academics and develop good study habits was one of the primary reasons why wanted to become involved in tutoring.

What do you love about being a tutor?

I really enjoy witnessing students get a sense of satisfaction when something finally clicks, and times when my student comes back with the news that they passed the exam with flying colors because it shows that their hard work has paid off.

How should a student prepare for a tutoring session with you?

A student who comes in well prepared usually has questions or topic in mind that they would like to go over. It is important that they know what they don't know because that where I would come in to help! Last but not least, having an open mind is key so that they are able to think about new ways to solve a problem.

How can someone meet with you through the Academic Success Center?

A student can stop by drop in tutoring, or they can make an appointment in Sherman Hall to have weekly tutoring sessions. My tutees usually ask me when I have hours for drop in tutoring in the Academic Success Center, and we try to coordinate our time accordingly.

Hannah is one of our amazing tutors and SI/PASS leaders that we are highlighting during National Tutor Appreciation Week, and we appreciate her sharing her love of tutoring with us.

Follow us on myUMBC to see who we highlight tomorrow.

Researcher of the Week: Tony Cano

<Tagline>URA Scholar Conducts International Research in Colombia!</Tagline>

I used two research methods during my field-work to withdraw evidence to analyze and answer my project questions.

Who is your mentor for your project?

Dr. Felipe Filomeno, Political Science.

How did you find your mentor?

I took Dr. Filomeno's POLI 361 - Comparative Political Analysis class and thought he was a good candidate due to his research background.

How did you become interested in this project?

I have done journalistic independent projects in the past about similar topics but after taking several political science classes, I wanted to conduct an interdisciplinary project using social science theories and my visual art skills. At the same time, I really wanted to know more about IDPs in general and the different types of migration.

What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?

The hardest part about my project has been transcribing the video-interviews because my subjects did not speak Spanish fluently. I did not expect to be planning every single activity or action throughout my research, however, this has also helped me to be more organized with my research deadlines.

What has been the most rewarding part?

The chance to travel to Colombia, South America to interview IDPs in Nelson Mandela, Cartagena, and experience a new culture.

How will you disseminate your research?

I intend to present my research at URCAD 2020, and hopefully publish a paper about my project findings.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Research something you’re passionate about, educate yourself on the topic, become an expert on the topic, find an issue on the topic, study the issue closely, formulate an idea and make a proposal.

What are your career goals?

After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in photojournalism to have the opportunity to continue to study and research more issues like this one around the world.

A 360 video I made in in Nelson Mandela:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIttmBBmAO4&t=213s
