Researcher of the Week: Ashley Majekodunmi

<Tagline>From the headlines! Immune responses to E-Cigarettes</Tagline>

Olufolake Majekodunmi is a Biological Sciences major, a URA Scholar, and a MARC U*STAR Scholar who will graduate in May, 2021.

Title of your research project: Behavioral and Physiological Effects of E-cigarette Flavorings in TRPM5 and TRPM5-KO Mice: Altered Taste Preference and Immune Response

Describe your project: My project is to examine inflammatory responses in the taste cells of mice models after exposure to e-juices through the process of immunostaining.

Who is your mentor(s) for your project?

My mentor is Dr. Weihong Lin and Dr. Tatsuya Ogura of the Biological Sciences Department. After my freshman year, I wanted to get involved with research, so I emailed Dr. Lin and luckily, she was open to me joining her lab. I chose their lab because I was interested in the effects of drugs on the physiological parts of the body. My mentors are very supportive and they are always there when I need help.

How did you become interested in this project?

In my first year in the lab, I performed behavioral tests. I studied the effect of e-cigarette flavorings and their masking ability on nicotine-containing fluid with mice models. We saw the masking ability in the flavor menthol. After that experience, I was very interested in the effects of e-cigarette exposure on the tongue.

What has been the hardest part about your research/What was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?

The hardest part so far has been the cutting and embedding of tissue samples. It’s very easy to make a mistake, however I was able to overcome this with the guidance of my mentors.

What has been the most rewarding part?

I believe research is discovering the unknown and I get to help solve that unknown problem. I find the process of that discovery rewarding because the challenges and failures along the way make it worthwhile.

How will you disseminate your research?

I will present my research at URCAD and hopefully publish a paper in the future.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Find a research area that interests you and don’t be afraid to ask questions. I had so many questions when I first entered the lab and I was too afraid to ask my mentors. There is nothing wrong with asking questions.

What are your career goals?

My career goal is to obtain a Ph.D. in pharmacology and become a biomedical scientist.

¡Habla Español con Amelia Agranovich!

<Tagline>Part of our "Get to Know" series for Tutor Appreciation Week</Tagline>

Happy Friday, Retrievers!

Today is the final day of National Tutor Appreciation Week! Thank you so much for reaching out to our tutors, SI PASS leaders, and peer mentors and letting them know they are appreciated and valued. And of course, this means we have our last entry in our Get to Know series!

For our final entry, we have Amelia Agranovich, one of our wonderful Spanish tutors! Amelia is a senior and has been studying Spanish for 8 years! I could go on, but let's get to the interview!

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is Amelia and I’m a senior studying Geography and Environmental Studies as well as Global Studies. I’ve been studying Spanish for the past 8 years so by now I’ve reached some level of fluency.

How are you involved on campus?

On campus, I have worked as a tour guide, and I now work as a Spanish tutor and as a TA for the class Science of Water (SCI 100).

Why did you decide to become a tutor?

I decided to become a tutor because I love speaking and practicing Spanish, and I love helping others improve their own skills.

What is your favorite thing about being a tutor?

My favorite thing about being a tutor is what I called the “clicking moment;" when a tricky concept suddenly makes sense to my student.

Why should students utilize tutoring?

With tutoring, my job is to help fill in the gaps. We all have our own ways of learning and understanding material, and some things come easier to us than others. I’m here to help with whatever feels most challenging to you, the student. Tutoring is an excellent way to review and learn material that you may find difficult in class, and it’s much more personal than the typical class experience. With tutoring, you and your tutor can focus together on exactly what you need help with and get down to the specifics.

How should students prepare for a tutoring session?

In order to prepare for a session, bring your materials like classwork or past homework to the session, and think of some questions that you may have for the tutor.

When and where can someone work with you through the Academic Success Center?

You can find me at the Academic Success Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 P.M., and Wednesdays at 10:00 A.M. Also, I’m in the Spanish lab with other tutors on Fridays, which runs from 2:00 P.M. till 5:00 P.M.

Gracias, Amelia for sharing your love of tutoring with us!

And that finishes out our Get to Know series! Make sure you use all of the great resources that the Academic Success Center has to offer and meet some of the great people that make it all happen. Don't forget to follow our myUMBC group for updates!
