In accordance with the campus holiday closure, the Library's virtual services will be closed on Friday, July 3.
For the health and safety of the UMBC community, the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery building, including the atrium and Retriever Learning Center, will be closed until further notice. Overdue fines WILL NOT accrue during this period while the physical campus is closed.
Curbside Returns: You may drop off materials on campus without physical contact. Click here for a campus map with drop off locations. To avoid damage, please DO NOT put equipment or laptops in these bins. Do not leave items outside of the library.

The Internet Archive has also made available the National Emergency Library, "a collection of books that supports emergency remote teaching, research activities, independent scholarship, and intellectual stimulation while universities, schools, training centers, and libraries are closed."
Interlibrary Loan is operating at a reduced level, but may be able to provide article or chapter scans from our databases and e-journals, as well as from databases and e-journals from our resource sharing partners. Although we are not able to scan items from UMBC's print collections, we may be able to locate them for you online or from a vendor. Academic Success Center Service Continuity during COVID-19
Academic support services available via alternative formats
Student Success is a priority at UMBC.
The Academic Success Center will continue to offer student support services for students, faculty and staff in alternative formats.
If you are unsure which service you need, email us and we will help you navigate the various options.
Appointment Tutoring
Appointment Tutoring will continue to be scheduled online using TutorTrac. Appointments will be conducted in an online format instead of in person at the scheduled time. Here are the instructions for scheduling tutoring appointments. Once an appointment is scheduled, tutors will email students with a link to the online platform to conduct the tutoring session before the scheduled time.
Math and Science Tutoring Center
All tutoring offered through the Math and Science Tutoring Center will be scheduled online by appointment using TutorTrac. Appointments will be conducted in an online format instead of in person at the scheduled time. Here are the instructions for scheduling tutoring appointments. Once an appointment is scheduled, tutors will email students with a link to the online platform to conduct the tutoring session before the scheduled time.
Writing Center
Writing Center Tutoring will continue to be scheduled online using TutorTrac. Here are the instructions for scheduling tutoring appointments through the Writing Center. Appointments will be conducted online asynchronously. Once an appointment is scheduled, tutors will email students with instructions about how to share their writing assignment before the scheduled time.
SI PASS Supplemental Instruction Peer-Assisted Study Sessions
SI PASS sessions will be conducted online at the scheduled times. SI PASS sessions can be joined using Blackboard Collaborate in the Blackboard site of the class being supported.
Academic Success Meetings
Academic Success Meetings can be scheduled online using this link. After a meeting is scheduled, students can use the link provided in the Google Calendar event to access the meeting online.
Placement Testing
Placement Testing is scheduled online and students take their placement tests online.
First-Year Intervention Academic Alerts
The First-Year Intervention (FYI) Academic Alerts program is administered by faculty online through April 8, 2020. Students receiving FYI alerts are referred to online resources.
EDUC 113
Courses will continue to be offered online via Blackboard. If you are a student enrolled in EDUC 113 this semester, please contact your professor with questions about the course.
LRC 099
Courses will continue to be offered online via Blackboard. If you are a student enrolled in LRC 099 this semester, please contact your professor with questions about the course.
Academic Advocacy
Academic Advocates will continue to work with students, faculty and staff by phone, video and chat as requested. Students who have an assigned Academic Advocate can schedule a meeting using the link provided on their myUMBC profile page. If a student is unsure if they have an Academic Advocate and would like to request support, they may submit a self-referral using this link. Any faculty or staff members who wish to submit a student referral can do so online and the Academic Advocates will reach out to students directly to provide support.
Academic Standards and Policy Administration
Petitions for exemptions to Academic Policy will continue to be handled online. Many helpful resources, including whom to contact, are available online.

Library Hours and Services
Update on Coronavirus Planning
Library hours and services are in flux due to campus planning for COVID-19 (coronavirus). Please stay tuned to MyUMBC or the Library & Gallery website for the most recent information and hours.
All Library & Gallery events are canceled until at least April 6, per University policy.
Students and instructors with materials on course reserve: some physical reserves materials may be available in our catalog as e-books, on sites that allow streaming of media items, or are accessible via the public domain. If the item is not available electronically, the Reserves (or ILL) staff, upon request, may be able to digitize assigned readings from items on Course Reserves and post to Blackboard. We are unable to reproduce content from a disc. Please allow a minimum of five business days for requests to digitize course materials. Staff will prioritize requests by the assignment due date whenever possible.
For requests to digitize course readings, please obtain the name and number of the course and share the digital copy with the Reserves staff (reserves-group@umbc.edu).
For inquiries regarding due dates and fines, nothing will become due from Sunday March 15th through Sunday March 22nd. All USM libraries will be lenient with fines if campuses close post March 22nd. Note that some short-term loan items may become due whenever the owning library is open. Patrons do need to be mindful of honoring such due dates – i.e. course reserves, and media items and equipment.

Partnering for student success: Centering student agency in the writing and research process.

The library and writing center staff have developed a strong collaborative relationship to center student agency in the research and writing process at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).
What Do “Diversity” and “Social Justice” Mean to Writing Center Practitioners?
Presenters: Violeta Brito, Uchendu Uchendu, Fleurine Amouzou Guiffo
This roundtable will engage participants to think critically about diversity and social justice in writing centers. We will analyze the past, present, and future pedagogies of writing centers in the context of social justice.
Creating Trauma-Informed Writing Workshops: Reflection and Intervention in the Narratives of Our Lives.
Presenter: Elaine MacDougall, Writing Center Director.
Trauma-Informed writing workshops allow space for reflection and intervention in our own thought processes. Writers can reflect on their own sense of a “dominant cultural narrative” and work to transform that narrative if necessary, giving voice to silence when imposed on individuals in our communities, including writing center spaces.
Developing more effective tutoring strategies for multilingual writers in the Writing Center.
Presenters: Ajay Kharkar, Jamie Denton
This Data Dash presentation features the early findings of research on strategies to increase comfort for multilingual writers in our Writing Center.

Speaker Applications are open!
We're so excited to announce that the speaker application for TEDxUMBC 2020 is now open! Our theme this year is Unmasking Uncertainty.
It's intentionally broad, because we're open to hearing about any way
that you interpret it and can relate it to your life or your work.
If you're a UMBC undergrad, grad student, alum, faculty or staff member,
we'd love to hear from you. We want to hear about your ideas, your
stories, your experiences, your performances of any kind. And if you're interested in nominating someone else, please send them a link to the application.

TEDxUMBC 2020
Organizing Committee Applications Open!
If you want to be a part of the team that's making TEDxUMBC 2020 happen,
please apply to be a part of the organizing committee. They are currently looking for:
- Design coordinator:
We're looking for someone with experience in design to help us create
the website, branding materials and other aesthetic components of
TEDxUMBC.
- Social media coordinator: We're
looking for someone with professional social media experience to create
and manage a strong online presence for TEDxUMBC, including website
content and social media, and also to be responsible for promoting it to
the public.
- Website coordinator:
We're looking for someone with web development experience to work with
the graphic designer to create a website for TEDxUMBC that is accessible
and easily managed.
- Production coordinator:
We're looking for someone with photography, videography or production
experience to help us manage the photography and videography needs of
TEDxUMBC.
- Workshop coordinator:
We're looking for someone with demonstrated interest in storytelling
and community-building to help us plan and organize storytelling and
community-building workshops.

In conjunction with partners from four other Maryland higher education institutions, the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery is working on a grant-funded project entitled 'A Roadmap to the Future of Promotion and Tenure' that explores how openness, equity, diversity, and inclusion might be more strongly recognized and rewarded in promotion and tenure practices. As part of those efforts, we are conducting a survey of tenured and tenure-track faculty at Maryland academic institutions to learn about current policies and practices, faculty values, and opinions about how policies and practices align with those values. The survey has been reviewed by the Office of Research at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and determined to be non-human subjects research.
We invite UMBC Tenure-Track and Tenured Faculty to take the survey.
Background:
This project is funded by the Association of College & Research Libraries and led by the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery at UMBC with four partner libraries at other Maryland academic institutions: Johns Hopkins, Towson University, University of Baltimore, and University of Maryland, College Park. Orientation Advising Opportunities for Grad Students
Gain valuable experience & a small stipend for summer work!
the Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising has
openings available for summer Orientation Advisors! As an advisor, you would
attend Orientation sessions where you would meet with students one-on-one to
plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we
will provide all training necessary!
Besides compensation, this is an excellent opportunity to
gain professional and interpersonal experience. Depending on your field,
your time as a student may not open you up to many client-facing interactions,
and this is a pathway to gaining that experience. If you are considering a
career in academia, meanwhile, advising experience is highly sought-after in
faculty openings.
- Graduate students are eligible to be compensated at the rate
of $100 per all-day session and $50 per evening session.

application attached, which is due HERE
by May 1, 2020. We will also be hosting a number of informational sessions
for those who may be interested:
- Wednesday, March 11, 12-1 PM at Sherman Hall 220 (B-Wing,
2nd Floor)

Floor)

assistantship, you will be required to submit a “Request for Additional
