We seek proposals for 10-minute panel presentations exploring the complexity and importance of conversations about race, diversity, and inclusion in the academy. We are interested in proposals that

Why is it important to engage in conversations about the histories of systematic and institutional racism, discrimination, and oppression?

How does scholarship in the humanities help us discuss race, diversity, inclusion, and social justice?

What teaching practices help us hold difficult conversations in the classroom and foster dialogue among our students?

How do we work together with students, community partners, and other members of the public to confront the complexity of diversity and inclusion, and work toward equity and social justice?

The Dresher Center for the Humanities at UMBC invites applications for Visiting Faculty Fellowships as part of its Inclusion Imperative Program. Funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Applications are welcome from full-time faculty pursuing humanities research at four-year colleges and universities in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

Fellows will spend one semester or one academic year advancing their research while in residence at the Dresher Center. The Dresher Center provides research support and collegial conversation in a robust humanities center environment that includes public events and symposia, grants workshops, works-in-progress talks, internal residential faculty research fellowships, and graduate student fellowships.

Dr. Bhalla’s grant will support the transformation of a popular course in the American Studies department, Studies in Asian American Culture, into one that engages the public humanities. This revised course will aim to take students out of the classroom to see the public impact of Asian American studies. In collaboration with Dr. Theo Gonzalves, curator of Asian Pacific American History in the Division of Cultural and Community Life at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History (NMAH), and Dr. Philippa Rappoport, Manager of Community Engagement at the Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access, Dr. Bhalla will restructure the course content to include student-led programming, bringing together Asian American studies, public humanities, public history, critical theory, and career development. Students will also utilize the popular Smithsonian Learning Lab to create and share their own digital source collections.

Dr. Lizarazo’s grant will support the creation of a class on global stories that builds on a critical and interdisciplinary understanding of global issues through digital storytelling (DS). Understanding DS as both an example of digital humanities and a method for community-based research, this class will allow students to gain skills to consume and produce stories in a collaborative setting, aligning with ’UMBC’s commitment to civic engagement and Global Studies’ critical approach to technology and global-local interconnectedness. Students will also learn from guest lecturers and local community organizers to build knowledge about communities, such as immigrants, deportees, LGBTQ+, and Latinas, who are traditionally underrepresented in UMBC’s syllabi and demographics.

Applications have opened for non-UMBC faculty to apply for the Inclusion Imperative's 2020-2021 Visiting Faculty Fellowship! Please share with your colleagues at other institutions. If you are a full-time UMBC faculty member interested in becoming a collaborator to the 2020-2021 fellows, please contact us at inclusionimperative@umbc.edu

The Dresher Center for the Humanities at UMBC invites applications for Visiting Faculty Fellowships as part of its Inclusion Imperative Program. Funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Inclusion Imperative is a five-year initiative to support diversity and inclusion in humanities scholarship and curriculum. Applications are welcome from full-time faculty pursuing humanities research at four-year colleges and universities in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

Fellowships will be awarded to scholars who are committed to diversity in the academy and to the advancement of groups historically underrepresented in the professoriate.

Faculty will be in residence at the Dresher Center for the Humanities at UMBC for a period of either one semester or one academic year and will receive a salary support stipend of up to $50,000 (one year) or $25,000 (one semester). They will have access to an office and to administrative and research development services in the Dresher Center, as well as to the Albin O. Kuhn Library and other UMBC events and facilities. This regional program does not provide funds for housing and transportation; however, each fellow will receive funding support of up to $2,500 for research and travel-related expenses.

For more information on the fellowship and the application process please visit our FAQ.

Applications are due by January 15, 2020. Nomination and recommendation letters are due by February 1, 2020 (please review and follow the application instructions for these letters).
