A New Version: Contingent I Contract

The UMBC Contingent I Contract has been modified to include three updates which are listed below. Beginning July 20, 2020, (pay period 03), all contingent I contracts must be documented using the latest form version. New contracts and renewals using the older form will not be accepted.

Fillable Form: The contingent I contract has been converted from paper into an adobe fillable form to assist with the ease of electronic completion. The conversion to a docusign document will be forthcoming at a later time so HR can identify efficient workflows that will accommodate the various departmental processes. Therefore, the current submission process for contracts and PAR forms have not changed.

Nepotism Section: Earlier this year, Human Resources added a new nepotism question to the application forms in the PageUp system. To ensure consistency of the applicant process and compliance with the USM policy on Employment of Members of the Same Family (Nepotism), the contingent I contract has been modified to include a nepotism section. A reference to the USM policy, a list of definitions of “family member”, and a reserved section for candidates to identify applicable family members are now included in the contract. Hiring managers should review this section during the screening stage to verify that a conflict in supervisor/subordinate relationship will not be created. Relationships that may cause an ethical concern regarding grants/sponsored awards should also be considered. The USM nepotism policy applies to all UMBC faculty and staff employees.

Updated Background Check Information: The background check section of the contingent I contract has been expanded. In addition to positions with financial responsibilities, background checks must be conducted for positions that will have interaction with youth/minors or any responsibility deemed necessary for a check. An email address will be prompted for the candidate so an authorization release may be emailed directly to them to initiate a background check if one is required.

Attachments:

UMBC Contingent I Contract

Employment of Members of the Same Family (Nepotism)

Thank you.

Sherrell McNamara

HRIS Manager

Motivational Monday TEDx of the Week

<Tagline>"The art of stillness."</Tagline>

Looking for a dose of inspiration to start your week? No need to look any further. Each week, we curate talks on topics that matter NOW for all of us related to resilience, self-care, dealing with uncertain times, as well as ways to stay connected, inspired, and grounded when the earth beneath us is shifting.

Today's talk is The art of stillness by Pico Iyer. The place that travel writer Pico Iyer would most like to go? Nowhere. In a counterintuitive and lyrical meditation, Iyer takes a look at the incredible insight that comes with taking time for stillness. In our world of constant movement and distraction, he teases out strategies we all can use to take back a few minutes out of every day, or a few days out of every season. It's the talk for anyone who feels overwhelmed by the demands for our world.

After you watch, we invite you to reflect on the following:

What resonated for you in the video?

What lived experiences do you have, either personally or professionally that align with the core message of the talk?

As you think of your role as a student, employee, or manager what feels relevant and useful to remember?

What are you taking away that feels meaningful - either a new perspective, a potential action, etc.

How might we take better care of ourselves and each other during this time?

If you're a supervisor, consider using this talk for team building purposes! You might send the video ahead of your meeting with several reflection questions on which you'd like your staff to come prepared to speak.
