<Tagline>"The art of stillness."</Tagline>

Looking for a dose of inspiration to start your week? No need to look any further. Each week, we curate talks on topics that matter NOW for all of us related to resilience, self-care, dealing with uncertain times, as well as ways to stay connected, inspired, and grounded when the earth beneath us is shifting.

Today's talk is The art of stillness by Pico Iyer. The place that travel writer Pico Iyer would most like to go? Nowhere. In a counterintuitive and lyrical meditation, Iyer takes a look at the incredible insight that comes with taking time for stillness. In our world of constant movement and distraction, he teases out strategies we all can use to take back a few minutes out of every day, or a few days out of every season. It's the talk for anyone who feels overwhelmed by the demands for our world.

After you watch, we invite you to reflect on the following:

What resonated for you in the video?

What lived experiences do you have, either personally or professionally that align with the core message of the talk?

As you think of your role as a student, employee, or manager what feels relevant and useful to remember?

What are you taking away that feels meaningful - either a new perspective, a potential action, etc.

How might we take better care of ourselves and each other during this time?

If you're a supervisor, consider using this talk for team building purposes! You might send the video ahead of your meeting with several reflection questions on which you'd like your staff to come prepared to speak.

<Tagline>"How racial bias works - and how to disrupt it."</Tagline>

Looking for a dose of inspiration to start your week? No need to look any further. Eberhardt. Our brains create categories to make sense of the world, recognize patterns and make quick decisions. But this ability to categorize also exacts a heavy toll in the form of unconscious bias. In this powerful talk, psychologist Jennifer L. Eberhardt explores how our biases unfairly target Black people at all levels of society -- from schools and social media to policing and criminal justice -- and discusses how creating points of friction can help us actively interrupt and address this troubling problem.

Motivational Monday TEDx of the Week

<Tagline>"There’s no shame in taking care of your mental health."</Tagline>

Looking for a dose of inspiration to start your week? No need to look any further. Each week, we curate talks on topics that matter NOW for all of us related to resilience, self-care, dealing with uncertain times, as well as ways to stay connected, inspired, and grounded when the earth beneath us is shifting.

Today's talk is There's no shame in taking care of your mental health by Sangu Delle. When stress got to be too
much for TED Fellow Sangu Delle, he had to confront his own deep prejudice:
that men shouldn't take care of their mental health. In a personal talk, Delle
shares how he learned to handle anxiety in a society that's uncomfortable with
emotions. As he says: "Being honest about how we feel doesn't make us weak
    -- it makes us human."

USM MetLife Enrollment Period

<Tagline>Additional Updates Regarding the April Enrollment Period</Tagline>

Since our initial
communication the USM MetLife website is now
online. There are several updates we would like to share to assist
eligible employees with navigating the new website:

Employee ID/username: Your Employee ID/username is your W#. This is
the common identifier for all USM employees.
You may find your W# here. We have given that
feedback to the USM and to GIS (the new administrator of
    the USM MetLife website).

PIN/Password: Your PIN/password is the last
four digits of your W# + your birth year.
For example, if your W# is W1234567 and your birth year is 1950, then
    your PIN/Password would be 45671950.

Current Coverage: Coverage for all employees who were enrolled
with UNUM Group Life and/or LTD, automatically rolled over to the new USM
MetLife plan. No additional action is
required if no changes will be made. However, we encourage current enrollees to
    log in to the USM
    MetLife
website to review beneficiary and dependent information (if applicable).

New Enrollees: Eligible employees (Regular
Faculty/Staff and Contingent II employees) seeking new enrollment in the USM
MetLife insurance plan will be required to complete the health questions,
regardless of the level of coverage requested.

State vs USM MetLife: The USM MetLife offered to regular faculty
and staff and contingent II employees is a post-tax plan. In addition, the USM MetLife plan offers a
higher amount of life insurance coverage to enrollees (Optional Life coverage
is available in $10,000 increments up to the lessor of 6x salary or $750,000).

USM MetLife LTD: The USM MetLife Long Term Disability (LTD) plan
allows for enrollment for either a 90-day elimination period, or a 365-day
elimination period. For the period of 4/1
    – 4/30/2021, you can enroll in the 365-day elimination period LTD option
without having to answer any health questions.

As a reminder, the enrollment
period ends 4/30/2021. Please contact hrbenefits@umbc.edu with any questions regarding
    the USM MetLife enrollment period.
