taki Back Online After Unscheduled Downtime
To all taki users,
At 12:30PM portions of the taki cluster environment became unavailable.
The management system attempted to correct the issue by selectively killing administrative processes until, at 12:56PM, the entire system became unresponsive.
After reseting the management system and ensuring various processes restarted appropriately, we were able to bring the system back online at around 2PM.
While no compute hardware was rebooted, this unscheduled downtime likely resulted in some loss of state on running jobs. Please inspect the output of any jobs that completed during this time for obvious errors or rerun them.
As a result of the management system being unavailable for >1hour, attempts to access the cluster or use SLURM during this time likely failed. We will be resolving tickets related to this with a link to this message.

Default Intel Compiler set to 2020b
We have switched the default Intel compiler to the 2020b version. You will not need to do anything to use the new version, it is part of your default environment. The older versions of the Intel compilers are still available. You can use the module command to load these older versions. The following command will show you the available version of the Intel compilers available.
module spider intel

CDO Now Available Across taki
Operations geared toward analysis of geophysical data
Hi All,
This is just an update regarding a new set of software packages now available on the taki cluster environment, CDO.
CDO is a set of command line operations geared toward analysis of geophysical data, especially from climate numerical weather prediction models. Operations include, among many others, horizontal re-gridding and vertical interpolation, various forms of temporal averaging, and the addition or subtraction of variables across different files. They can be applied to netCDF4 and GRIB files. Users outside of the atmospheric science community may find many of the CDO operations useful, but note that some will only work if the data includes geographical dimensions.
For information on loading CDO and associated modules into your user environment, run `module spider CDO`.

Intel Adopts LLVM
Intel Compilers move to use LLVM open source infrastructure
I just saw this update regarding the Intel compilers, thought I would share it with our HPC community. This will not affect the compilers we currently have on Taki.
From the article:
Intel reported in a blog this week that its adoption of the open source LLVM architecture for Intel’s C/C++ compiler is complete. The transition is part of Intel’s ongoing effort to boost oneAPI as the preferred tool suite for programming Intel’s growing portfolio diverse processors including CPUs, FPGAs, and GPUs.
