Hello everyone,
Some of us are working in our specific health IT areas, personalized medicine, home care IT, etc,. This is great... we need to specialize to develop expertise, publish, look for opportunities, etc. but what is the big picture for this health IT?? "where are we headed as the whole community of scientists and practitioners?" you may ask..
There is a growing consensus in many health IT communities that a LHS should be the vision and it is the future of health IT. In fact, the Federal Strategic Plan for Health IT 2015-2020 (you can find it in the Documents section as well) follows the same ideas and mentions LHS.
I've just uploaded a 3 page article published in 2010 by Friedman et al. which talks about a vision for a Nationwide Learning Health System:

For those of you who like watching videos (like me while exercising on treadmill) I've also uploaded a video recording of Charles Friedman from Jan 2014:

Enjoy and feel free to let us know what you think.
ps.
some notes
* We invited Chuck as a distinguished speaker and he visited our department in Oct 2012. See: https://hit.umbc.edu/news/17-distinguished-lecture-by-charles-p-friedman-learning-health-system
* Chuck's wife, Patti Abbott received her PhD from our IS department at UMBC in 1999
* Those of you who would like to read more about this important concept (LHS) in these cold winter days would not be disappointed! There are a series of books published by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) about LHS.
