New History Department Advising Guidelines
As of Fall 2018 the History Department will be changing the format for undergraduate major and minor advising for advanced course registration. Instead of meeting with a specific, assigned advisor you can now be advised and get clearance for course registration by coming to open advising hours. Available advisors and advising hours will be posted on the History department website [https://history.umbc.edu/ ] and in the History department. Contact Ms. Ison in the History department if you have any questions (410-455-2012) or (ison@umbc.edu).
For Advanced Registration for Spring 2019 the History Department will be holding the following open advising hours:
Monday-Thursday Oct 22. - Oct. 25, 2018 OPEN ADVISING HOURS from 11am-3pm.
Monday-Friday Oct. 29 - Nov. 2, 2018 OPEN ADVISING HOURS Mon.-Thurs. from 10am-4pm and Friday 9:30-11 and 1-3
Monday-Thursday Nov 5-8 OPEN ADVISING HOURS Mon: 11am-1pm, Tues: 11am-3pm, Wed. 11-1pm, Thurs. 11am-3pm

You should check your degree audit to see what courses and requirements you have fulfilled.
And you should download and fill in the “Requirements to Complete the Major” form that can be found on the History department website under Students --Departmental Forms drop down menu [ https://history.umbc.edu/departmental-forms/ ].
Please bring this form with you to your advising session. This will ensure that you have a productive and timely advising session.
If you have already established an advising relationship with a particular History professor, look out for their available advising times to see them during the advising weeks. If your schedules don’t align, you may contact them directly by email to set up an advising appointment. Otherwise, history majors can be advised by any history department advisor available during the open advising hours.
Professor Anne Sarah Rubin received a UMBC START grant from the Office of the VP for Research for the project “Slave Streets, Free Streets: Visualizing the Landscape of Slavery and Freedom in Early Baltimore.” This digital project expands an existing project, Visualizing Early Baltimore <http://earlybaltimore.org> by highlighting the lives of 4,300 enslaved and 10,300 free African Americans in the city.
Congratulation to Prof. Nianshen Song on the publication of Making Borders in Modern East Asia: The Tumen River Demarcation, 1881–1919(Cambridge University Press, 2018). Based on Chinese, Korean and Japanase sources, the book focuses on a multilateral and multiethnic border between China and Korea during the fraught period that witnessed the Sino-Japanese War, the Russo-Japanese War, and the First World War.
]]>Associate Prof. Susan McDonough was recently selected as the recipient of the 2018 Mid-Career Faculty Excellence Award for CAHSS while Prof. Andrew Nolan, Director of the History Program at Shady Grove, won the 2018 Excellence in Teaching Award for CAHSS. Both these awards are new awards at UMBC, so Professors McDonough and Nolan were the inaugural recipients. They set a high bar! And Prof. Melissa Blair won the 2018 Kendall Service Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Universities at Shady Grove. This means that she was recognized as the best teacher among representatives of nine different universities. Congratulations to all!
