    <div class="html-content"><h5>We are delighted to announce that two alums from the History program, Kristina Gaddy (B.A., 2009) and Andrew Holter (B.A., 2012, M.A., 2017) have each won a Ruby! </h5><h5>Rubys are awarded by The Robert W. Deutsch Foundation to fund innovative people, projects, and ideas based in Baltimore. </h5><div><br></div><div><h3>KRISTINA GADDY <span>will use her award to support, <em>Well of Souls</em>, a literary exploration of the little known history of the banjo in the Americas, it's role as a a spiritual device in the hands of enslaved Africans, and the instrument's legacy in today’s culture and society. </span></h3><div><span><br></span></div><div><h3>ANDREW HOLTER <span>will use his award to support, <em>Hello, Fellow Worker</em>, the first biography of Baltimore-bred, Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Murray Kempton, whose professional life spans from H.L.     <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>New History Department Advising Guidelines</span></p><br><p><span>As of Fall 2018 the History Department will be changing the format for undergraduate major and minor advising for advanced course registration. Instead of meeting with a specific, assigned advisor you can now be advised and get clearance for course registration by coming to open advising hours. Available advisors and advising hours will be posted on the History department website [</span><a href="https://history.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>https://history.umbc.edu/</span></a><span> ] and in the History department. <Title>Alum Rhiannon Dowling, '09 M.A., wins PhD dissertation prize</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><strong>Professor Rhiannon Dowling, </strong>'09 M.A., Historical Studies (Advisor: Kate Brown) earned her PhD in History from the University of California, Berkeley in 2017. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Harriman Institute, Columbia University. Her dissertation entitled “Brezhnev's War on Crime: The Criminal in Soviet Society, 1963-1982" won this year's Robert C. Tucker/Stephen F. Cohen Dissertation Prize. The prize is sponsored by the KAT Charitable Foundation and is awarded annually by the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) for an outstanding English-language doctoral dissertation in Soviet or Post-Soviet politics and history.</div>

Of course, Prof. Boehling was the Founding Director of the Dresher Center, so this is a homecoming of sorts.</span></span></div>

Based on Chinese, Korean and Japanase sources, the book focuses on a multilateral and multiethnic border between China and Korea during  the fraught period that witnessed the Sino-Japanese War, the Russo-Japanese War, and the First World War.</p></div>

<Title>CAHSS Awards for History Faculty</Title>

    <p>Associate Prof. <strong>Susan McDonough</strong> was recently selected as the
    recipient of the 2018 Mid-Career Faculty Excellence Award for CAHSS while Prof. <strong>Andrew Nolan,</strong> Director of the History Program at Shady Grove, won the 2018
    Excellence in Teaching Award for CAHSS. Both these awards are new awards at
    UMBC, so Professors McDonough and Nolan were the inaugural recipients.  They set a high bar! And Prof. <strong>Melissa Blair</strong>
    won the 2018 Kendall Service Award for Excellence in Teaching from the
    Universities at Shady Grove.  This means
    that she was recognized as the best teacher among representatives of nine
    different universities.  Congratulations
