<Title>Congratulations to Prof. Vaporis on his new book</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><br></div>Congratulations to Professor Constantine Vaporis who has just published <div><em><br></em></div><div><em>Samurai: An Encyclopedia of Japan's Cultured Warriors </em>(ABC-CLIO, 2019).</div><div><br></div><div><div>The samurai were an aristocratic class of warriors who imposed and maintained peace in Japan for more than two centuries during the Tokugawa or Edo period, 1603–1868. While they maintained a monopoly on the legitimate use of violence, as a result of the peace the samurai themselves were transformed over time into an educated, cultured elite—one that remained fiercely proud of its military legacy and hyper-sensitive in defending their individual honor. </div><div><br></div><div>This book provides detailed information about the samurai, beginning with a timeline and narrative historical overview of the samurai. This is followed by more than 100 alphabetically arranged entries on topics related to the samurai, such as ritual suicide, castles, weapons, housing, clothing, samurai women, and more. The entries cite works for further reading and often include sidebars linking the samurai to popular culture, tourist sites, and other information. A selection of primary source documents offers firsthand accounts from the era, and the volume closes with a selected, general bibliography.</div></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div></div>

    <div class="html-content"><p><strong>History Department Advising Guidelines</strong></p><p>As of Fall 2018 the History Department changed the format for undergraduate major and minor advising for advanced course registration. Instead of meeting with a specific, assigned advisor you can now be advised and get clearance for course registration by coming to open advising hours. Available advisors and advising hours will be posted on the History department website [ <a href="https://history.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://history.umbc.edu </a>] and in the History department. <Title>Congratulations to History major Julian Tash</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Congratulations to JULIAN TASH (History and Asian Studies, BA, Dec. 2018)!<div><br><div>Julian is a semi-finalist for a Fulbright fellowship for graduate study in Taiwan, at National Chengchi University.</div><div><br></div><div>He is also a finalist for the Blakemore Fellowship which would allow him to study Japanese at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Studies in Yokohama.</div><div><br></div><div>And lastly, he was named first runner-up for ASIANetwork’s Marianna McJimsey Award: 2019 Student Paper Competition for his paper “Democracy Suppressed Allied Censorship in Occupied Japan, 1945-52.” His submission was based on his History honors thesis, which was supervised by Professors Vaporis and Oyen.</div><div> </div><div>Good luck to Julian as he embarks on his fellowship interviews and attends the 2019 ASIANetwork Annual Conference at the University of San Diego in April 2019.  As part of his award, he will participate in the Student Poster Session at the annual conference.  </div><div><br></div></div></div>
