Advising and Registration for Fall Semester will be Online
This semester, the History department will be doing advising entirely online. In a break from the open advising system of the last few semesters, we have assigned everyone an advisor from the full-time faculty. Your advisor should reach out to you, but just in case they don’t, the assignments are below. If you have an ongoing advising relationship with a specific faculty member, feel free to contact them.
We want to make this process as seamless as possible during all of this upheaval. You can be advised over email, or you can set up a google chat or phone call with your advisor.
BEFORE YOUR ARE ADVISED:
1) check the History major/minor requirements and your degree audit.
2) Note which classes you need to complete your major/minor and your degree.
3) Then consult the Fall schedule and know which classes you will be taking.
4) Please be prepared with any other questions you might have.

Historians know the value of qualitative sources like journals, diaries, and memoirs, especially when they are sources kept by 'average' people.
One of the biggest experiments in journal keeping by a large population was the British experiment called Mass Observation. According to our own Dr. Ritschel:
"Mass Observation was founded in 1937 as a novel experiment in recording daily life in Britain. Its founders sought to capture the lives and views of ordinary people by asking hundreds of them to keep diaries that kept track of their everyday experiences. The result was not the “scientific” polling of national opinion introduced recently by Gallup, but an archive of individual observations and reactions that has allowed historians to paint a vivid portrait of the British people in the tumultuous years before and during the Second World War."
We are now living through another tumultuous time. If you are so inclined you might want to keep a journal of your experiences of living through a pandemic. Don't feel you have to make anything up, the more mundane the better. Future historians will thank you.

USM Board of Regents Announces Winners of Annual Faculty Awards
Recipients to be Acknowledged at Annual Ceremony May 1
Baltimore, Md. (March 9, 2020)—The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents is honoring 17 members of its faculty at institutions across the system as recipients of the 2020 USM Regents’ Faculty Awards.
The awards are the highest honor presented by the board to exemplary faculty members. The awards honor excellence in the following five categories: Public Service; Scholarship, Research or Creative Activity; Mentoring; Teaching; and Innovation.
EXCELLENCE IN MENTORING:
University of Maryland, Baltimore County—Dr. Denise Meringolo: Associate Professor of History and the Director of the Public History (Graduate/Undergraduate) Programs.
Dr. Meringolo is a dedicated educator, scholar and mentor who is in the forefront of a new community-engaged scholarship. Dr. Meringolo arranges and coordinates public history internship opportunities for more than 54 students who wish to pursue their interests interning at archives, libraries, museums, and other nearby cultural institutions.
We know it has been a roller coaster of a week for all of us, but now it is Spring Break so enjoy some time off. When we return it will be in an online format for a while. Both students and professors will need to be flexible since none of us anticipated this change in format when the semester started. We will all figure it out.

The great thing about History is you can continue to learn anywhere, anytime. So read a book, listen to a podcast, find a website, explore primary sources online, and maybe even volunteer to transcribe some historical sources.

Thurs 12/5 (tomorrow) Noon-4pm with Prof. Froide Rm 513
Tues 12/10 11-12:45 and 2:30 to 4:00 with Prof. Meringolo
After the last day of classes on Tues 12/10 there are no more regular advising hours.
You must meet a History advisor in person to be cleared to register. Being cleared does NOT mean that you have you to register right now. It just means you have been advised.
