Attention leaders and future leaders of the Honors College! Have you heard about the Retriever Leadership Institute? 

Honors College students have been involved in this program for several years now, and it's a great opportunity to cultivate skills that will serve you here and in your life after UMBC.

Here are the guidelines:

1. Designs must be in one color and appear on only one side of a shirt.

2. Designs should include graphics and (appropriate) words only, with no background.

3. Designs must include the words "UMBC Honors College."

4. Designs must be submitted to honorscollege@umbc.edu as a hi-res .jpg file by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, September 16.

Voting will be held between the 17th and 20th.

As part of the Robotics Institute Summer Scholars (RISS) program at Carnegie Mellon University, Stephanie researched how robots can integrate human values and norms into accomplishing tasks so that they "can learn how to act in environments where there may be social ramifications to actions." Her mentor is Dr. Katia Sycara of Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute.

"If you find someone's research findings interesting," Stephanie says, "then contact them about it! They may have opportunities for you to work with them."

Besides publishing her work in the RISS Working Papers Journal, Stephanie is planning to present her work at URCAD this spring.

This summer, Jordan participated in Rutgers University's RISE (Research Intensive Summer Experience), where he studied the biases of computer algorithms. His advisor, Dr. Anand Sarwate of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, sought him out after reading his application.

Entering an experience like that for the first time can be intimidating, but Jordan persevered:

"Being fairly new to research, the novel vocabulary made research feel very advanced and out of my scope of understanding. Once I got over the language barrier, I remembered that research is simply asking questions and then seeing if those questions can be answered."

In addition to presenting at UMBC's SURF (Summer Undergraduate Research Fest) in August, Jordan plans to present at URCAD this spring.
