With Dr. Tamra Mendelson of the Department of Biological Sciences, Shabnam has been researching how the size of female darter fish is a factor in their counterparts' mating preferences. She presented her research at last spring's URCAD and at ABRCMS last week in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Shirin spent the summer at the University of Virginia's Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP) studying the effects of sleep hormones on the growth of cancer cells and their response to chemotherapeutic drugs. Her mentor was Dr. Daniel Gioeli of UVA's Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology.

In November, Shirin will travel to Indianapolis to present her research at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS), an experience funded through a UMBC Travel Grant. She'll also be among the presenters at URCAD this semester.

Adursh Iyer '20, Physics and member of the Honors College, has been named UMBC's Researcher of the Week!

With Professor Eileen Meyer of the Physics Department and one of her Ph.D. students, Peter Breiding, Adursh has been studying the gamma ray emission from black hole jets to understand why black holes produce X-ray wavelength light and whether they produce gamma ray light, too.

"They have both constantly pushed me to be the most successful researcher than I can be," Adursh says, "by encouraging me to ask valuable questions and and having fun while I perform this research, as well as offering an invaluable amount of advice at every stage of the data analysis process and encouraging me to present my findings!"

Adursh plans to present his research at the next Meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Seattle in January 2019. He'll also be presenting at UMBC's Undergraduate Research and Achievement Day (URCAD) in April.

The panel will be moderated by Dr. Christopher Varlack, Lecturer in INDS and The Honors College, and start at 12:00 PM on the 7th floor of the AOK Library. Free lunch will be provided starting at 11:30 AM.  

This event is a special opportunity to engage with the problems of censorship while celebrating the freedom to read. If reading matters to you, or if being able to read matters to you, consider attending!

In addition to having presented at UMBC's Summer Undergraduate Research Fest (SURF) in August, Ghazal is planning to present at this October's Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Chemical and Biological Sciences and at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) in November.

Here are the guidelines:

1. Designs must be in one color and appear on only one side of a shirt.

2. Designs should include graphics and (appropriate) words only, with no background.

3. Designs must include the words "UMBC Honors College."

4. Designs must be submitted to honorscollege@umbc.edu as a hi-res .jpg file.
