Congratulations Noel Getachew!
Intern of the Week
Noel Getachew '20, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and member of the Honors College, is UMBC's Intern of the Week for his work at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. As part of a laboratory team directed by Dr. Michael Summers, Noel studies the molecular components of HIV and particularly the interactions between tRNA and matrix proteins. Understanding those interactions, he says, can help drug companies to "design some sort of molecule to structurally prevent the interaction or come up with other treatment method."

Hey Honors College!
Are you interested in developing leadership skills to add to your resume? Do you want to find your place as a UMBC campus leader?
The Retriever Leadership Institute is your opportunity to do both of those things and more!
The Retriever Leadership Institute (RLI) is a free 5-week leadership development workshop series just for UMBC students. Participants will meet once per week for 1.5 hours with their peer facilitators in the Honors College student cohort. The Honors College track is made specifically for you! The weekly time is from 5:00 PM-6:30 PM on Thursdays in the Patapsco classroom. During RLI, students will engage in meaningful learning about their values as a leader, working in teams, managing conflict, social identity, and much more.

The UMBC Review is currently accepting submissions* for papers from all fields. We do not require your work to be 100% perfect at this stage - all papers will go through a thorough editing process by editors and off-campus reviewers.
See submission guidelines, and prior editions of The Review here, and submit your paper by September 15th, 2017!

If so, you have probably heard about Fulbright Boot Camp (FBC), the summer workshops that help guide you through the Student U.S. Fulbright Program application cycle The first of the series usually starts in June, but why not strike while the iron is hot?

Daniel Ocasio named Valedictorian for the Class of 2017!
Congratulations to Daniel Ocasio, who will deliver the Valedictory Address at the May 25 undergraduate commencement ceremony. Daniel is a Chemical Engineering major, a Meyerhoff Scholar, and a member of the Honors College who has earned a 4.0 GPA and a Spanish certificate at UMBC. He is also a recipient of a Goldwater Scholarship.
During his time as a student, Daniel founded a UMBC chapter of the Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers that has provided a supportive community for Latino/a students. He also co-founded Achievement and Inspiration through Mentorship (AIM), which develops East Baltimore middle school students and their mentors both academically and personally.
Daniel is a first generation college student who has done research in the laboratory of Dr. Lee Blaney, and in laboratories at the University of California, Berkeley, California Institute of Technology, and the University of Michigan. Daniel's passion is working on the inequality of resource accessibility in the world. Specifically he plans to be part of the solutions needed to provide safe water to the hundreds of millions of individuals across the globe presently without it on a daily basis. To that end, Daniel will pursue his Ph.D. in environmental engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dylan Elliott Wins 2016-17 Student Affairs Leadership Award
Congratulations, Dylan!
Dylan Elliott, History '17, is one of two recipients of the Student Affairs Leadership Award. The award committee considered campus leaders from across the student body for exceptional leadership in various activities and organizations. Dylan has been recognized for his integrity, patience, and unwavering commitment to serve others.
Dylan is a member of the Honors College and a Humanities Scholar. He is also one of two editors for the UMBC Review, a forum team leader in the Honors College, a Career Center Peer Advisor, and captain of UMBC's Mock Trial team. In a few short weeks, Dylan will lead the Mock Trial team to their first ever national championship tournament!
In May, Dylan will graduate from UMBC, and in the fall, he will begin law school at the University of Maryland Carey School of Law. Dylan's leadership has been a gift to the UMBC community for the past four years. We are sad to see him leave but are also excited to see where he will go.
