POSTDOCS: Applications are open for the Discover Symposium and Salk Edge program Plan your summer right! Applications close 2/17 and 3/1
Applications are open for the third annual Discover Symposium and Salk Edge program at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies!

The Salk Institute, located in San Diego, California, is one of the top five research centers in the world and has been home to six Nobel Laureates.

1) The Discover Symposium is open to current PhD students who are 1-2 years from beginning their postdoctoral position and invites candidates to an exclusive, immersive experience designed to ignite collaboration and accelerate careers. The dates for the symposium are July 15-17, 2026. 

The selected candidates will visit Salk and be provided with opportunities to:

  • Present their novel research in a symposium setting and interact with other trainees and colleagues who are at the forefront of their respective fields.
  • Engage with and meet Salk faculty one-on-one and facilitate mentor-mentee pairing opportunities.
  • Learn about the Institute, expose them to the ongoing developments at Salk, and inform them of upcoming recruitment opportunities.

2) Salk Edge is open to earlier career PhD students (years 2-4) who are looking to enhance their training. This two-week, technique-intensive summer initiative is designed to equip PhD students with advanced research skills and professional development tools for successful careers in science.

This program focuses on training students in cutting-edge laboratory techniques, while also offering workshops on soft skills, including grant writing, networking, and scientific communication. Participants engage directly with Salk faculty and labs, helping build valuable future postdoctoral connections. The dates for the program are August 17-28, 2026.

The Annual USM PROMISE AGEP Fall Harvest Dinner and Networking Reception will be held from 5:30-8:30pm in The Atrium, The Stamp (Adele H. Stamp Student Union) at the University of Maryland, College Park campus on Friday, November 15, 2019.

Registration is now open! Faculty, Staff, and Graduate Students are invited to RSVP!

Please note there is limited seating for this event and you should only RSVP if you know you will be attending. All attendees must RSVP. University System of Maryland individuals that would like to bring family, friends, support, should make certain that ALL individuals attending fill out the RSVP form (for seating and food ordering purposes).

Tenure Track Professor of Biology

Beloit College seeks an excellent teacher and productive researcher to fill a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning with the 2020-21 academic year. The successful applicant will hold a Ph.D. in organismal, population, or ecosystem biology with a focus on quantitatively-oriented analyses. Possible fields of emphasis include, but are not limited to, epidemiology, ecology, conservation and restoration biology, aquatic biology, invertebrate ecology, entomology, and animal behavior. We welcome applications from candidates with laboratory, field, computational, classroom, and/or community-based research interests.

The successful candidate will teach introductory biology, experimental design and applied biological statistics, intermediate and/or advanced courses in the area of expertise, and/or interdisciplinary courses. The successful candidate will also develop a research program that engages undergraduates, contribute to all-college programs such as first- and second-year seminars, interdisciplinary studies, and international education, and serve in leadership roles in campus governance. We especially seek candidates who have demonstrated success in working with ethnically, culturally, and/or socio-economically diverse populations of students. This position is an excellent opportunity to teach in a department that is nationally-known for innovative pedagogy.

FULL-TIME, TENURE TRACK ASSISTANT-PROFESSOR POSITION AVAILABLE AUGUST 2020

The Department of Biology at Providence College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning fall 2020 to support a recently developed Environmental Biology Major. We seek outstanding candidates who hold a Ph.D. (post-doctoral experience preferred) in Environmental Science or a closely related discipline, such as Biology, Ecology, Marine Science, Conservation Biology and Geoscience.

Successful candidates are expected to develop and maintain an active, highly visible, extramurally funded research program with outstanding scholarship and to demonstrate excellence in teaching and mentoring of undergraduate students. We are open to considering candidates in any area of relevant expertise in the environment and who may foster collaborations among the diverse faculty at Providence College. Examples of areas of interest: community response to climate change; conservation; surface and ground water hydrology; effects of contaminants, such as marine and coastal plastics; biological sequestration of carbon; and organismal responses to ocean warming and acidification.

Dissertation House focuses on Non-Traditional Students or UMBC student workers

Any UMBC student working on their master thesis or dissertation can apply

Friday and Saturday, October 4 & 5, 2019

This activity is open to any full-time UMBC employee who is working on a thesis or dissertation, at any university, e.g., UMBC employees who are in the doctoral program at Frostburg University. This activity is also open to UMBC graduate students who are full-time employees, career professional, or non-traditional returning students. All graduate students can apply.

Application process
 
Part 1:
 
  1. Submit a brief description (maximum 2 pages, font size 11-12 point 1-inch margins) that describes the project that you wish to accomplish during the Dissertation House period.
Part 2: Please use the following guidelines for the application:
    1. Summary of the project, including research question(s), data or texts, and method.
    2. Amount completed on the project to date
    3. Any obstacles that you are encountering that hinder completion of the dissertation.
    4. Include the following header information with the description:
      • Full Name
      • Address
      • Telephone number (cellphone)
      • E-mail address
      • Academic Program and Year in the program
In Dissertation House students will learn effective time-management skills; learn how to set small manageable goals, and will meet with a dissertation coach in one-on-one consultations to discuss and address obstacles that might prevent them completing their degrees.
The commitment is for students to attend all the days the workshop is in session. The dissertation house activities focus on areas where students typically have difficulty: conceptualizing a topic, writing a literature review, transitioning from a proposal to a dissertation, analyzing data, editing.
