<Title>Fellowships for Parental Leave for Graduate Assistants</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>In recognition of the challenges of balancing the demands of a graduate </span><span>assistantship</span><span> and parenting a new child, </span><span>UMBC</span><span> offers Fellowships for Parental Leave to improve the environment for new parents who are Graduate Assistants (</span><span>GAs</span><span>).  Any GA is eligible to receive a Fellowship for:  (1) the birth of a child; (2) the recent adoption of a child under the age of six; or (3) the assumption of other parenting responsibilities (e.g., foster parenting, legal guardianship) of a child under the age of six.  Except for birth mothers as described below, the period of the Fellowship is six weeks.  During the Fellowship period,  the GA retains his or her full stipend and benefits, provides no service to the University, and maintains enrollment as a full-time (9 credits) student in fall and spring semesters.</span><br><br><span>The University recognizes the need of birth mothers to respond to or to recover from the effects of pregnancy and/or the delivery of a child.  If a birth mother believes that she requires a Fellowship period of more than six weeks, she must obtain a letter from her physician or other licensed health-care professional that provides (1) the nature of the need; (2) a statement that the GA cannot return to her duties for health reasons arising from the pregnancy and/or delivery; and (3) the duration of required absence beyond the initial six weeks.</span><br><br><span>In all instances, the GA should discuss his or her Fellowship plans with his or her </span><span>GPD</span><span> and/or supervisor as soon as possible to allow for maximum collegial support.  All Fellowship requests must be approved by the Associate Dean of the Graduate School and the GA’s supervisor.  Upon request, the Graduate School will reimburse the cost of the GA’s stipend to the supporting department.  The form by which to request a Fellowship is located on the </span><a href="https://umbc.box.com/s/zn8xru850da381trn10cbkb8zxd91usm" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Graduate School's website</a><span> under "GA Forms."</span><br><br><span>The Graduate School recommends that international students consult in advance with the Office of International Education Services before their period of parental leave.</span><br><br><span>The substance of the above text will be included in the next version of the Graduate Assistant Handbook as a replacement for "Maternity Leave."  </span></div>

    <p><span>Project: UMBC seeks to “<span>c</span>elebrate” career-life integration through
    awareness raising education and training.</span></p>
    
    <p><strong><u><span>Awareness Campaign:</span></u></strong><span> UMBC will launch a campaign that will bring
    into focus the CLB policies on campus.</span></p>
    
    <p><strong><u><span>Seminars and Workshops:</span></u></strong><span> We
    will implement a series of campus–wide educational awareness programs that will focus on CLB policies.</span></p>
    
    <p><strong><u><span>Evaluation
    &amp; Assessment:</span></u></strong><span> We will evaluate and assess the activities for the project.</span></p>

    <p><span>Requirements include experience with: <em>Logistics/coordination, marketing, basic website maintenance, evaluation and assessment, quantitative and
    qualitative methods. Knowledge of career-life-balance literature and research is a plus. We are particularly interested in qualitative coding, familiarity with narratives, and other evaluation and assessment methodologies. </em></span></p><p><span>The candidate can be either a full-time master's or doctoral student. This is a 20-hour assistantship. The assistantship includes a stipend, tuition, and health insurance. Students who are interested in part-time, 10 hour positions will be considered. This position does not have any restrictions with regard to citizenship. <Title>Do you know about the career/life balance policies for GAs?</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><strong><span>Sick
    Leave </span></strong></p>
    
    <p><span>If a GA becomes ill, sick leave should be supported
    collegially, up to 40 hours during the contract year (this includes summer term
    for GAs supported during the summer session). After four consecutive days of
    sick leave, the supervisor may require the GA to provide a letter from a
    physician or other licensed health care professional that states (1) the nature
    of the illness; (2) that the GA can or cannot return to work for health reasons;
    and, (3) the duration of the required sick leave. This letter can be submitted
    upon the GA’s return to work. Sick days should be recorded on time sheets using
    standard leave codes.</span></p>
    
    <p><span> </span></p>
    
    <p><strong><span>Maternity Leave</span></strong></p>
    
    <p><span>Maternity
    leave is not regarded as sick leave. If maternity leave is required, it should
    be discussed with the GA’s Graduate Program Director or supervisor as soon as
    possible. Whereas maternity leave arrangements should be made to fit the
    individual circumstances, all arrangements must include a 6 week minimum post birth
    recovery period. Leave arrangements greater than 10 weeks require extenuating
    circumstances. All maternity leave agreements must be approved by the Associate
    Dean of the Graduate School. A central pool of funding will be available to
    reimburse, upon request from the department, the cost of stipends of GAs on maternity

<Title>Job on campus with the Career Services Center</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><br></div><div><p>Career Services is currently accepting applications for Career Peer Advisors. <br></p><p>Career Peer Advisors assist the Career Services Center in extending career services and information to the UMBC student body. Students must be able to commit at least one academic year to the following duties and responsibilities: take walk-in appointments, review resumes and cover letters; facilitate workshops/seminars; help market CSC services and programs to UMBC student body; design and present group information meetings upon request to student organizations, residence halls, and other groups; provide general office reception duties; conduct outreach to student organizations and one of three colleges (Engineering and Information Technology, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Natural and Mathematical Sciences); work closely with  CSC staff on special projects as needed.  Training will be provided. Hours:  10-12 per week.</p><p><strong>Note: All majors encouraged to apply.</strong></p><p><strong><br></strong></p><p><strong>Qualifications</strong></p><p>Continuing undergraduate or graduate student with at least a 2.75 GPA; strong interest in helping others and working with students, staff, employers, and faculty; in good academic standing; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; experience with public speaking helpful; ability to use tact and diplomacy in working with others both face to face and on the phone; previous or current involvement in campus organizations or activities helpful; computer literacy and comfort with PowerPoint presentation technology; detail oriented, dependable and reliable; initiative and enthusiasm. All majors invited to apply.
