    <div>This activity is open to any full-time UMBC employee who is working on a thesis or dissertation, at any university, e.g., UMBC employees who are in the doctoral program at Frostburg University. This activity is also open to UMBC graduate students who are full-time employees, career professional, or non-traditional returning students. All graduate students can apply.</div>

    <div>In Dissertation House students will learn effective time-management skills; learn how to set small manageable goals, and will meet with a dissertation coach in one-on-one consultations to discuss and address obstacles that might prevent them completing their degrees.</div>
    
    <div><em>The commitment is for students to attend all the days the workshop is in session. </em>The dissertation house activities focus on areas where students typically have difficulty: conceptualizing a topic, writing a literature review, transitioning from a proposal to a dissertation, analyzing data, editing.</div>

    <p><strong>Dr. Freeman Hrabowski III </strong></p>
    <p>Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, President of UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) since 1992, is a consultant on science and math education to national agencies, universities, and school systems. He was named by President Obama to chair the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. He also chaired the National Academies’ committee that produced the report, <em>Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation: America’s Science and Technology Talent at the Crossroads</em> (2011). His 2013 TED talk highlights the “<a href="https://www.ted.com/talks/freeman_hrabowski_4_pillars_of_college_success_in_science" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Four Pillars of College Success in Science</a>.”</p>
    <p>Named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by<em> TIME</em> (2012) and one of America’s Best Leaders by <em>U.S. News &amp; World Report</em> (2008), he also received TIAA-CREF’s <em>Theodore M. Hesburgh Award for Leadership Excellence</em> (2011), the Carnegie Corporation’s <em>Academic Leadership Award</em> (2011), and the <em>Heinz Award</em> (2012) for contributions to improving the “Human Condition.” UMBC has been recognized as a model for inclusive excellence by such publications as <em>U.S. News, </em>which the past eight years has recognized UMBC as a national leader in academic innovation and undergraduate teaching. Dr. Hrabowski’s most recent book, <em>Holding Fast to Dreams: Empowering Youth from the Civil Rights Crusade to STEM Achievement</em>, describes the events and experiences that played a central role in his development as an educator and leader.</p>

<Title>2018 USM PROMISE AGEP Research Symposium &amp; Professional Development Conference Feb 16, 2018 #ThinkBigDiversity</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><h1>Important update! We still have spaces for Lightning Round and Poster Presentations.</h1>
    <p><em>USM PROMISE AGEP: Maryland Transformation</em> is pleased to invite you to attend and participate in the <strong>2018 University System of Maryland PROMISE AGEP Research Symposium and Professional Development Conference on February 16, 2018.</strong> This conference replaces the former PROMISE Research Symposium and adds a professional development component that will prepare graduate students and postdoctoral fellows for faculty positions in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM, which includes social sciences) disciplines. This year, PROMISE also invites undergraduate students to come to hear graduate students’ presentations and to participate in workshops that will prepare them to be graduate students with an eye on becoming future faculty members.</p>
    <p>This conference seeks to provide a venue that will allow students to present their work at any stage, receive feedback in preparation for presenting at larger venues, and provide training that will prepare participants for faculty careers.The event is free and meals are provided. Please apply to present at the conference using the rules in the “Call for Presentations” section below and save the date.</p>

The bus departs from the UMBC Administration Circle at 7:20 AM. This location is in front of the administration building. The bus will depart from UMD at 4:15 PM and arrive at UMBC around 5:15 PM.</p>

    <p>If you choose to drive on your own, you may pay to park in the <a href="https://www.admissions.umd.edu/visit/unionlanegarage.php" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Union Lane Garage</a> – located between the Adele H. Stamp Student Union Center for Campus Life and Cole Field House. Hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. daily. In this garage, you park in a numbered spot, remember your number, and walk out toward the entrance to enter it into the machine, where you will pre-pay for a certain number of hours.     <li><em>Presentation slots are limited to graduate students within the <a href="http://www.usmd.edu/institutions/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">University System of Maryland.</a></em></li>

The presenter’s website will include a photo, bio, abstract, synopsis of research, and list of other relevant publications or presentations as applicable.     <p><em>USM PROMISE AGEP: Maryland Transformation</em> is pleased to invite you to attend and participate in the <strong>2018 University System of Maryland PROMISE AGEP Research Symposium and Professional Development Conference on February 16, 2018.</strong> This conference replaces the former PROMISE Research Symposium and adds a professional development component that will prepare graduate students and postdoctoral fellows for faculty positions in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM, which includes social sciences) disciplines. This year, PROMISE also invites undergraduate students to come to hear graduate students’ presentations, and to participate in workshops that will prepare them to be graduate students with an eye on becoming future faculty members.</p>
    <p>This conference seeks to provide a venue that will allow students to present their work at any stage, receive feedback in preparation for presenting at larger venues, and provide training that will prepare participants for faculty careers.The event is free and meals are provided. Please apply to present at the conference using the rules in the “Call for Presentations” section below and save the date.</p>

Focusing on the global importance of research and innovation, life-long career benefits, and real-world role models, the symposium will help each student envision his or her future as a science and technology leader, successfully apply for a GEM fellowship, and gain entry to a graduate program. This GRAD Lab will also highlight environmental careers <span>and is hosted by the National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC), along with the University of Maryland-College Park’s Clark School of Engineering and College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences.</span></p>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The Summer Dissertation House is coming to UMBC, July 11-14, 2017. Graduate students who plan to participate should follow the <a href="https://dissertationhouse.wordpress.com/apply/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">application procedures</a>.</p>
    <p>Open application period: Early bird May 22, 2017 – June 2, 2017. Late registration June 3, 2017 – June 18, 2017 (Applications received during the early bird period will have priority.)</p>
    <p>(Please note that there are only 15 to 18 slots for this event, consider applying early)</p>

    <ul>
    <li>The Dissertation House runs from 9 AM – 5 PM, for four days, Tuesday, July 11 through Friday, July 14, 2017</li>
    <li>Students must plan to <strong>attend the full session</strong>, for each of the 4 days.</li>
    <li>Daily schedule includes 2 mini-lectures, and 5 hours of writing per day.</li>
    <li>Breakfast, Lunch, and a snack will be served daily.</li>
    </ul>
    <p><em>The July 11-14, 2017, Dissertation House is <strong>only available to UMBC’s graduate students</strong> who can attend in-person, however, the online version is open to anyone, from any institution, world-wide!</em></p>
    <p>This version of the Dissertation House is open to all graduate students, in all disciplines.<br>
    There are 15 to 18 spaces available for the Dissertation House.</p>

Alecia Eubanks earned a Ph.D. in Applied Psychology at Southern Illinois University. Her professional experiences include administration, leadership training, curriculum design, and program evaluation across government, educational, and nonprofit sectors. Dr. Eubanks is an alumna of the University of Maryland’s Academic Achievement Programs and a former Associate Director of the Ronald E.     <p>You are invited to participate in the <strong>NextProfScience 2017</strong> workshop being offered at the <strong>University of Michigan</strong> on <strong>May 2-5, 2017 </strong>(see <a href="http://sites.lsa.umich.edu/nextprof-science" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">link</a>). NextProf Science is aimed at future faculty—advanced doctoral students or postdoctoral fellows who are interested in an academic career in science at an exceptional academic research institution and who have demonstrated a commitment to diversity.</p>
    <p>The science and mathematics departments of the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and Arts will host ~50 future faculty participants on the U-M campus to show them the rewards of an academic career, help them understand the faculty search process, and connect them with faculty in their research area, as well as academic leaders, and other participants.</p>
    <p>The <strong>NextProf<em> </em>Science<em> </em>2017</strong><em> </em>workshop is free to participants, who must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Underrepresented minorities and women are especially encouraged to apply. Travel, lodging, and meals will be covered by the program.</p>
    <p>Applicants may nominate themselves or be nominated by a faculty mentor.     <p><span><strong>Workshop Mission</strong></span></p>
    <p>Participants will learn to use the tools of true, personal storytelling to create and share an engaging and accessible story about their research focus, project, or goals. Participants will:</p>
    <p>● Enhance their understanding of true, personal storytelling as a powerful tool of communication to engage and connect with a variety of audiences, and explain complex issues in an accessible and relatable way.</p>
    <p>● Improve their ability to identify and enact the principles of powerful true, personal storytelling.</p>
    <p>● Create a 3- to 5-minute engaging true, personal tale that illuminates their research focus and findings.</p>
    <p>● Share that personal research tale with a group of peers and receive feedback.</p>

    <p><a href="http://www.laurawexler.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Laura Wexler</a> is the co-founder and co-producer of The Stoop Storytelling Series, a Baltimore-based cultural event and podcast in which “ordinary” people tell extraordinary true tales about their lives. Since 2006, Laura has presented workshops in true, personal storytelling for a range of organizations, businesses, and individuals. Her storytelling curriculum is based on 10 years of teaching memoir writing at the collegiate and graduate level, and her experience coaching more than 1,000 people to tell the true, personal tales of their lives. In addition to her work with The Stoop, Laura is the author of the book, Fire in a Canebrake: The Last Mass Lynching in America (Scribner), as well as nonfiction published in The Washington Post Magazine, The New York Times, and elsewhere. She currently writes and develops projects for TV and film.</p>
