RSVP for Dinner with Friends (Tues., 9/26, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.)
On Tuesday, September 6, the Center for Democracy and Civic Life will host the fall 2023 Dinner with Friends: an engaging, facilitated conversation that will connect you with other members of the UMBC community. This event will take place in UC (University Center) 312 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. The Center will provide a free catered dinner.
At Dinner with Friends, you’ll share stories, learn about each other’s experiences, and discuss how we can move forward together on a topic of your choice (see below). Students, faculty, staff, and alumni who participate in Dinners with Friends report that they have wonderful experiences.
Join a facilitated small-group conversation about one of the following discussion topics (you choose):
- Finding community and belonging at UMBC
- Mental health at UMBC
- Religious and faith-based inclusion at UMBC
- Support for graduate students at UMBC
- Welcoming neurodiversity at UMBC
Space at this Dinner with Friends program is limited, so please reserve your spot as soon as possible. Click here to RSVP. We will accept RSVPs until all spots have been reserved (but no later than Friday, September 22).
This Dinner with Friends program is organized by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life in collaboration with the Graduate School, Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging (i3b), Off-Campus Student Services (OCSS), Office of Accessibility and Disability Services (ADS/SDS), Retriever Integrated Health (RIH), and the Student Government Association (SGA).

SEA CIRTL Fellows Program
Teaching Opportunity, Certification and Summer Job $
Calling graduate students in the College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) interested in being a SEA CIRTL Fellow for the Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) and the CIRTL programs at UMBC. SEA provides one-week camps for middle and high school students on the UMBC Campus. These camps help kids to stay engaged, have fun learning science and technology skills, and get excited about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) at UMBC.
These SEA CIRTL Fellows will develop and implement a SEA one (1) week course in an engineering topic of their choice with guided mentorship in Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 and implement the course with SEA in Summer 2024. Fellows will be required to attend a variety of sessions that help them solidify their course ideas, learn about teaching approaches that are accessible and engaging for high school and middle school students, and plan their courses. This will all count toward a CIRTL certificate, which is a nationally recognized teaching certificate! Upon teaching the course in Summer 2024, Fellows will be paid a minimum of $1000/week for 1 or 2 weeks, with an opportunity for more depending on enrollment for the course.
Note: Courses are run as half-day camps for a week (5 days), and Fellows will be able to choose two weeks of these five options: June 24-28, July 8-12, July 15-19, July 22-26, July 29 – August 2.

Unlock Better Communication and Leadership: Join the Interact Dialogues Program to enhance your skills in discussing challenging subjects with diverse perspectives. Experience small group sessions led by fellow students, happening weekly and discover vital dialogue abilities, nurture empathetic listening, exchange cross-cultural stories, and explore your own journey."
The "INTERACT" program is a 5-week dialogue program at UMBC for students. It consists of 4 short sessions where participants learn and practice skills to become inclusive leaders and engaged community members. Completing the program means joining a community of students dedicated to making UMBC an inclusive place. Dialogue in this contest is a purposeful conversation where participants listen deeply and share authentically. The program will have small groups of up to 15 participants, held at different campus locations, and participants will receive i3b swag, like a free t-shirt. Participating offers the chance to develop leadership skills, build community, and enhance a sense of belonging at UMBC.

The Writing Advisor is back for the 2023-2024 academic school year!
GSA's new Writing Advisor for the 2023-2024 academic school year, Ben Marino, is now accepting appointments to review your writing assignments. The Writing Advisor provides a wide range of services, from brainstorming and outlining an assignment to doing a last review for grammatical errors, and everything in between. Please do not hesitate to make an appointment with the Writing Advisor for any assignment that you would like reviewed. You do not need to have any work done on the assignment.
This semester, the writing advisor is accepting appointments on Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:30 am - 12 pm and 12:30 pm - 3:45 pm, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm. An appointment can be scheduled using either of the following links:

Reminder: Graduate Assistants Orientation
Only New Graduate Assistants (GA, TA & RAs) must attend
August 24, from 1PM to 4PM Online
This event is mandatory for all NEW Graduate Assistants, this includes teaching assistants, research assistants, graders and peaceworkers. We encourage the additional participation of any graduate student who may be teaching in the future or as a refresher for returning GAs.
Join us for this need-to-know information session (orientation) for new GAs on August 24, from 1PM to 4PM Online. It will include an introduction to key resources on campus that you may need throughout your semester, from back-end technical support, to your benefits and policies governing graduate assistantships at UMBC. We look forward to meeting you and being part of your welcome back to UMBC!
