Bystander Intervention Training
We need your help to reduce power-based violence at UMBC
A green dot is any
behavior, choice or action that promotes safety for everyone and communicates
utter intolerance for sexual violence, dating/domestic violence, and stalking.
A green dot is intervening in a high risk situation a green dot is sharing a link to
your local prevention program on your social media a green dot is encouraging
the student organization you advise to look at their culture. A green dot is
simply your individual choice at any given moment to make our campus safer.
This training will be primarily geared towards students.

Mental Health First Aid
If you've never taken Mental Health First Aid (or it's been 3 years or more since you've taken it), now is the time to sign up for training!
We are excited to offer the UMBC community a 1-day skills-based training course designed to teach participants how to:
- recognize signs of mental health or substance use disorders.
- identify community resources.
- link people in crisis to the proper resources.
The course will consist of a 2-hour self-paced introduction course online, followed by a 6-hour virtual skills session with Mental Health First Aid instructors. You will learn a 5-step action plan and practice applying it throughout the skills section of the course.
Space is limited! You must register NO LATER than one week prior to the date of the training.

Library Closure Saturday, October 7
Regular hours will resume Sunday, October 8
Dear UMBC Community,
The Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery is undergoing construction to fix leaks and install a new roof. On Saturday, October 7, 2023, construction will take place inside the library's atrium to work on the ceiling and the roof above the atrium and the Retriever Learning Center (RLC). To ensure everyone's safety and allow for construction, the building will be closed for use on Saturday, October 7. The card swipe to the atrium and RLC will be deactivated at 5 a.m. on October 7, and will be reactivated at 6:30 p.m. The rest of the library and gallery building will remain closed until regular hours (noon to midnight) resume on Sunday, October 8.
We understand this may cause some inconvenience, but the closure is necessary to complete the construction work. Signage on the RLC and library and gallery doors will serve as reminders for the upcoming work.

Need Your Aetna Student Health Insurance Card
Instructions for how to get your card!
Have you signed up for the UMBC health insurance policy, Aetna Student Health, and need your insurance card?
There are 2 ways you can obtain a copy of your card:
1. You can come to Retriever Integrated Health and speak with one of the Insurance and Billing specialists who will print it for you.
2. You can print your card yourself by first sending a secure message via the
Retriever Care Portal and the Insurance and Billing specialists will give you the information and directions you need to print your insurance card.

Fellow faculty will share their research, provide important professional development sessions on publishing, Open Educational Resources, conducting research as an adjunct, and advocacy.
UMBC President Valerie Sheares Ashby join participants in a round table discussion about adjunct issues and community.

Open Source 101: 5:00pm-5:45pm
Interested in using open source projects to contribute to the software engineering community while also bolstering your resume? This workshop will review the basics of open source methodology and provide actionable steps for joining many kinds of open source projects. Google is one of the tech industry's biggest champions of decentralized open source software development, with examples such as Android, Chrome, and TensorFlow (among others).

ConnectingOrgs:Building Community with Restorative Practice
Student organizations offer a sense of community, belonging, and connection to students... but they aren't immune to conflicts. This workshop is an opportunity to learn more about how to implement restorative practices before conflicts emerge so that, when they do, you have a strong foundation to address them thoughtfully and thoroughly.
This workshop is available to all undergraduate and graduate students -- not just student org officers. Please share out this opportunity with anyone you think may want to attend!
