Recruiting Grad Students for Orientation Advising!

The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for Summer Orientation Advisors! Advisors meet with incoming students VIRTUALLY during the months of June-August in one-on-one sessions to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary!


Besides compensation, this is a rare chance for graduate students to gain professional and interpersonal experience. Depending on your field, your time as a student may not open you up to many client-facing interactions, and this is a pathway to gaining that experience. If you are considering ANY career path where importance is placed on the ability to interact with clients in a positive manner, this is a TERRIFIC opportunity to add this valuable experience to your resume. If you are considering a career in academia, meanwhile, advising experience specifically is highly sought-after in faculty openings.

Upon hire, you will be given the opportunity to select which days you are available to advise. Grad students are eligible to be compensated at the rate of $100 per afternoon session and $50 per evening session.

In addition, for the first time ever, all advisors will have the opportunity to earn the Orientation Advisor microcredential through Badges @UMBC, demonstrating to the campus and other institutions their customer service and analytical skills!

We are offering informational sessions for anyone interested or who even just might be interested in finding out about this exciting opportunity to expand their skillsets, make meaningful connections, serve their departments, and get paid!

BreakingGround Info Session for Faculty and Staff

Hosted by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life 

The BreakingGround initiative awards grants of up to $2,500.00 to UMBC faculty, staff, and students to implement educational and community-building courses and programs that foster civic agency: the capacity to initiate and make meaningful contributions to social change.

In this virtual information session, we will review the program and answer your questions. To register for this session, go to the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's event here. 

The options for using these funds are flexible, but some ideas include: experiential learning opportunities for students, student and community-engaged research projects, time to design deep transformations of existing curricula to be oriented toward civic agency, and resources for engagement with social changemakers and local communities. Retriever Integrated Health  has prepared a variety of services, sessions and workshops aiming to reach the Graduate Student community at large. Please make sure to follow their myUMBC group and join their community.

Services provided include:

  1. Executive Functioning Workshop Series - Work on developing skills to overcome barriers to success, including time management, task prioritization/implementation, motivation, and self-accountability. 
  2. Anxiety Toolbox Series - 3 workshops designed to help people learn about anxiety and some basic skills to help identify and manage anxious thoughts and behaviors.
  3. BRIDGE (Building Relationship Intimacy and Dialogue Effectiveness) - the series focuses on identifying ways to foster healthy relationships via self-monitoring, effective communication, and conflict resolution skills. The sessions include modules dedicated to help you: (1) better understand your values and boundaries in relationships, (2) learn the role of culture in communication, different styles of communication, and strategies for effective communication, and (3) identify common causes of conflict and effective conflict management techniques. 
  4. Mindfulness - Mindfulness is a state of nonjudgmental awareness of what is happening in the present moment, including the awareness of one's own thoughts, feelings, and senses. The ability to be mindful can reduce symptoms of depression, improve memory, enhance relationships, and improve your ability to manage emotions. During this workshop, you will learn the benefits of mindfulness practices and be guided through various exercises.
  5. Graduate Student Support Group (Virtual, Spring Semester) Starting February 22, need to have a previous consult! Thursdays 3:00 PM-4:15 PM
  6. Transitions: A Support Group for Graduating Students (Virtual, Spring Semester) Starting February 26, Mondays 12:00 PM- 1:00 PM.
  7. Dungeons and Dragons Therapy Group LGTBQ+ friendly (In-Person, Spring Semester) Starting February 28, Wednesdays 3:00 PM-5:00 PM.
  8. Support Group for International Students (In-Person, Spring Semester) Starting March 1st, Fridays 10:30 AM-12:00 PM.
