    <div>Please note that some of our alumni have taken advantage of these fellowships in the past and have found them to be extremely rewarding! We list two here:</div>
    
    <div>1) The East Asia Pacific Summer Institute (Note that Dr. Alexis Harryman, UMBC Biology, participated in this fellowship. She loved it and was a spokeperson for the seminar a few years ago. Alex participated in the Meyerhoff Graduate Fellows Program, and in PROMISE. )</div>
    
    <div>2) The National Physical Science Consortium.  (Note that we’ve had NPSC scholars in the past. This deadline in Nov. 30.)</div>

    <div><strong>EAPSI</strong></div>
    <div>The EAPSI Program provides U.S. graduate students in science and engineering (U.S. citizens and permanent residents) with an opportunity to spend 8 weeks (10 weeks for Japan) during the summer conducting research at one of the seven host locations in East Asia and Pacific: Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, and Taiwan.</div>
    <div> </div>
    <div>NSF provides EAPSI Fellows with a $5,000 stipend and roundtrip airplane ticket to the host location. Our foreign counterparts provide in-country living expenses and accommodations (arrangements vary by host location).</div>
    <div> </div>

<Title>PROMISE AGEP Fall Harvest Dinner &#8211; Friday, Nov. 16, 2012</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>Our annual PROMISE AGEP Fall Harvest Dinner at College Park will be held on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM. This is our “Thanksgiving Dinner” for PROMISE graduate students, postdocs, alumni, faculty, and staff. Students have a chance to be rejuvenated, re-connect, and network with others on different campuses who share research and other interests.</p>
    <p>This event is free for PROMISE graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty, and staff from UMCP, UMBC, UMB, and institutions within the University System of Maryland.</p>

    <p><strong><em>Excerpt:</em> </strong> The Department of Biological Sciences at UMBC invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in eukaryotic cell biology, especially as it relates to neurobiology, to complement existing departmental strengths in neuroscience and cell and developmental biology, and to interact with faculty whose interests range from genomics and molecular genetics to ecology, evolution, and behavior.     <p><strong>4.2 Statement of Purpose:  Four Paragraph Template</strong></p>
    <p>During UMBC’s PROMISE seminars and <a href="http://promiseagep.wordpress.com/2012/06/12/interested-in-applying-to-graduate-school-summer-horizons-2012-at-umbc-on-weds-july-18/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Horizons workshops</a>, students are taught to thoroughly read through the engineering departments’ websites and write their statements of purpose based on their personal research interests and experiences, coupled with research that is being conducted in the department.   When students are applying to Graduate School, and to doctoral programs in particular, they must be sure to make the case for the reasons why they want to be there.  The statement of purpose should reflect the “why.”  <em>Why you?  Why that particular research?  Why do you want to work with those professors or that lab? </em> (See the 4 paragraph structure in the full paper: <a href="http://promiseagep.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/rp293.pdf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Preparing for Engineering and Other STEM Graduate/Post-Graduate Masters and Doctoral Programs</a>.)</p>

    <p><strong>4.3 GRE Score: Focused attention on mathematics</strong></p>
    <p>Engineering programs expect students to have aptitude for mathematics.  The GRE provides faculty admissions committees with a standard measure by which to evaluate prospective students.  During UMBC’s workshops and seminars, students are reminded that many of the topics in the “Quantitative Reasoning” portion of the GRE include concepts from high school or secondary school.  Other topics are taught in introductory statistics courses and some students aren’t exposed to probability and statistics until they reach the university.  However, students in the seminars regularly reveal that they didn’t know that they had to study for the GRE.  While inferential statistics and the ability to construct proofs are not tested on the GRE, several students in seminars have been hesitant when they were asked for immediate answers to sample questions involving factorials, inequalities, or geometric representations.  The students said that they “used to know” how to solve certain kinds of equations or that they “didn’t remember” concepts.  To prepare students for the exam, UMBC’s seminars provide students with a live sample problem solving session, and the list of skills that they need in order to do well on the quantitative measure.  (See Table 3 in the full paper: <a href="http://promiseagep.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/rp293.pdf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Preparing for Engineering and Other STEM Graduate/Post-Graduate Masters and Doctoral Programs</a>.)</p>

<Title>PROMISE Opening Meeting/Dinner Friday, Sept. 14, 2012 &#8211; UMBC Game Room! Faculty, postdocs, grad students, and staff &#8211; all welcome!</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>PROMISE: Maryland’s AGEP is dedicated to increasing the numbers and diversity of Ph.D.s in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math fields. PROMISE also provides a strong support system for underrepresented students of all fields, and for all graduate students. Come out for dinner and connections.</p>
    <p>We have continually heard many of the same questions:</p>
    <ul>
    <li>Does UMBC have any other students who went to HBCUs, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, or Native American Universities or Tribal Colleges?</li>
    <li>I came from a small town in the south. Are there any other students from Georgia or North Carolina?</li>
    <li>Are there any other students from the Caribbean?</li>
    <li>I heard that there are only a few graduate students from the African Diaspora, where are they?</li>
    <li>I miss being able to hear and speak Spanish. Where are the other students from Puerto Rico, Mexico, or South America?</li>
    </ul>
    
    
    <div><strong><em>The answer for each of the questions above is yes </em></strong>… we have graduate students from these diverse backgrounds and you can meet or re-connect with them at the PROMISE Opening Meeting!</div>

    <p>This connection meeting will allow you to meet other students, staff, postdocs, and faculty members who also have similar experiences. Did you know that some of our faculty and staff are also from HBCUs, MSIs (Minority-Serving Institutions) or South America, or had the same kinds of experiences that you may be having now? Come out and meet them! We have faculty, postdocs, staff, and graduate students from Colombia, Panama, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Spain, etc. We have members in our community who went to either undergrad or grad school or taught at Howard, FAMU, NC A&amp;T, and more! We have people who have been active in the National Society of Black Engineers, Society for the Advancement of Chicano and Native American Scientists, the Compact for Faculty Diversity (includes social sciences and education programs), and other organizations that serve the needs of populations that are underrepresented in a variety of disciplines! <strong>Come on out and meet peers and mentors!</strong></p>
    <p>Dinner will be served. Please feel free to bring your family members, including children. If you are bringing family members, please let us know how many in the comments below. Children of our students always love it when we have programs in the game room!</p>
