<Title>Engaging with Disability Awareness Month at UMBC</Title>
<Tagline>Disability: Essential to the Equity and Inclusion Equation</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><div><strong>National Disability Awareness Month</strong> is  held in October to raise awareness about issues that arise within the lived experience of people with disabilities, and celebrates the many and varied contributions of Americans with disabilities.</div><div><div><div><br></div><div>NDAM's roots go back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with various types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to "National Disability Awareness Month" to address inclusion more broadly.<br></div><div><br></div><div>Americans with disabilities make up almost one-fifth of our population, which brings more celebration to this month, underneath the umbrella of the  Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)  <a href="https://www.adaanniversary.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">celebrating its 32st anniversary</a>, and <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/accessibility/posts/130484" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Section 504 celebrating its 51st Anniversary</a>. This month includes:</div><div><ul><li><a href="https://www.adhdawarenessmonth.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">ADHD Awareness Month</a></li><li><a href="https://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Breast Cancer Awareness Month</a><br></li><li><a href="http://www.dysautonomiainternational.org/page.php?ID=244" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dysautonomia Awareness Month</a><br></li><li><a href="https://ldaamerica.org/get-ready-for-ld-month-with-new-ld-posters/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Learning Disability Awareness Month</a><br></li><li><a href="https://www.dol.gov/agencies/odep" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Disability Employment Month</a></li><li><a href="https://www.upwithdowns.org/down-syndrome-awareness" rel="nofollow and complexity of being human, we respectfully nod to disability-related health conditions that are highlighted at other times.  We see you.  You matter.</div><div><br></div><div><a href="https://accessibility.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Accessibility and Disability Services</a>, remains committed to building on past progress and creating inclusive change as we work in partnership with the entire UMBC community, including Facilities Management, Human Resources and Instructional Technology. <a href="https://sds.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Student Disability Services </a>provides support for students with disabilities, as education is a path toward progress.   While huge strides have been made with accessibility and inclusion (which can happen via accommodation), people with disabilities still face discrimination and lack of understanding. and has many events planned -<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABFpTRlJUuc"     <div class="html-content"><h2><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/careers/events?mode=upcoming" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Wednesday, October 9, 2024</a><span> </span><span>· 12 - 1 PM</span></h2><hr><div></div><div><div>Graduate Students: Learn About the Paid Legislative Fellow Program at the Maryland General Assembly (Annapolis, MD)<div><br></div><div>Virtual Information Session begins at 12 pm on  October 9th, 2024.</div><div><br></div><div><div>The Legislative Fellows Program offers top graduate students in the Maryland, DC, and Virginia region an immersive experience in the legislative process working alongside nonpartisan staff within the Department of Legislative Services (DLS), the professional staff agency for the Maryland General Assembly (MGA). Fellows will work during the General Assembly’s annual 90-day legislative session (January – April) and assist legal, fiscal, and committee staff with their regular session duties. Fellows receive a stipend between $5,118 and $8,400. <Title>Important Notice: Google Quotas Established</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><div><div></div><div><div><div>The UMBC Division of Information Technology team is taking key steps to continue providing secure accounts and workspaces and ensure your information is protected. Several cloud service providers are phasing out unlimited cloud storage, including Google, Box, and Microsoft.</div><div><br></div><div>Google storage has been unlimited for all UMBC accounts for many years, and the amount of data some users have in their accounts has increased drastically. Google no longer provides unlimited cloud storage for higher education users. We must take action to reduce the amount of data we are storing as an institution in Google, and to this end, quotas have been established in Google for all UMBC accounts.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Please note that every effort is being made to ensure existing users in our campus community are not adversely affected by the storage quotas. Your data is important. Existing users have been provided additional space based on their current Google storage use. </strong>New UMBC accounts will be given the default quotas below to ensure we remain under our storage limits.     <div class="html-content"><p><img src="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/gsa/posts/144195/attachments/53446" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></p><div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>The 2024 Women of Color (WOC) STEM DTX conference, hosted by Career Communications Group, Inc., is taking place</span><strong> October 3-5, 2024 </strong><span>with options to participate either </span><strong>in-person</strong><span> or </span><strong>online</strong><span>. The conference features leadership and professional development programs in addition to a career fair where many top national and local companies in the STEM fields are actively recruiting STEM interns and professionals.</span></div><p>You will need to register to participate. Open to <strong>ALL</strong> students! <em>You can register to participate until the day of the event. However, it will take about 15-30 minutes for registrations to be activated and to gain access to the platform.</em></p><p>·       The job fair is <strong>free</strong>! The fee for attending the <strong>full online</strong> conference is $50. </p><p>·     If you are interested in attending <strong>in-person</strong> and have not already notified the Career Center, <em>please register on the WOC website</em> (link above).
