Engaging with Disability Awareness Month at UMBC Disability: Essential to the Equity and Inclusion Equation
National Disability Awareness Month is  held in October to raise awareness about issues that arise within the lived experience of people with disabilities, and celebrates the many and varied contributions of Americans with disabilities.

NDAM's roots go back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with various types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to "National Disability Awareness Month" to address inclusion more broadly.

Americans with disabilities make up almost one-fifth of our population, which brings more celebration to this month, underneath the umbrella of the  Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)  celebrating its 32st anniversary, and Section 504 celebrating its 51st Anniversary. This month includes:

and given the beauty and complexity of being human, we respectfully nod to disability-related health conditions that are highlighted at other times.  We see you.  You matter.

Accessibility and Disability Services, remains committed to building on past progress and creating inclusive change as we work in partnership with the entire UMBC community, including Facilities Management, Human Resources and Instructional Technology. Student Disability Services provides support for students with disabilities, as education is a path toward progress.   While huge strides have been made with accessibility and inclusion (which can happen via accommodation), people with disabilities still face discrimination and lack of understanding. and has many events planned - the fight for full inclusion remains (Judy Heumann Ted Talk link).

Retriever Integrated Health also has a range of health services that support campus members of all abilities in the new, very-accessible Center for Wellbeing  across from Erickson Field (D7 on the map).

Disability identity is intersectional with the history of the LGBTQ+ community that shares October as an awareness month.  October is also Relationship Violence Awareness Month, and we are very conscious that people with disabilities are at a much higher risk of Relationship and Sexual Violence and that any violence can cause, complicate and/or exacerbate disability.

Graduate Students: Learn About the Paid Legislative Fellow Program at the Maryland General Assembly (Annapolis, MD)

Virtual Information Session begins at 12 pm on  October 9th, 2024.

The Legislative Fellows Program offers top graduate students in the Maryland, DC, and Virginia region an immersive experience in the legislative process working alongside nonpartisan staff within the Department of Legislative Services (DLS), the professional staff agency for the Maryland General Assembly (MGA). Fellows will work during the General Assembly’s annual 90-day legislative session (January – April) and assist legal, fiscal, and committee staff with their regular session duties. Fellows receive a stipend between $5,118 and $8,400. The priority deadline for 2025 Fellows is October 18, 2024.

The UMBC Division of Information Technology team is taking key steps to continue providing secure accounts and workspaces and ensure your information is protected. Several cloud service providers are phasing out unlimited cloud storage, including Google, Box, and Microsoft.

Google storage has been unlimited for all UMBC accounts for many years, and the amount of data some users have in their accounts has increased drastically. Google no longer provides unlimited cloud storage for higher education users. We must take action to reduce the amount of data we are storing as an institution in Google, and to this end, quotas have been established in Google for all UMBC accounts.

Please note that every effort is being made to ensure existing users in our campus community are not adversely affected by the storage quotas. Your data is important. Existing users have been provided additional space based on their current Google storage use. New UMBC accounts will be given the default quotas below to ensure we remain under our storage limits. To assess your stored data and check your storage usage, visit your Drive storage page.

The 2024 Women of Color (WOC) STEM DTX conference, hosted by Career Communications Group, Inc., is taking place October 3-5, 2024 with options to participate either in-person or online. The conference features leadership and professional development programs in addition to a career fair where many top national and local companies in the STEM fields are actively recruiting STEM interns and professionals.

You will need to register to participate. Open to ALL students! You can register to participate until the day of the event. However, it will take about 15-30 minutes for registrations to be activated and to gain access to the platform.

·       The job fair is free! To participate in the online job fair only, go to: https://s4.goeshow.com/ccgroup/womenofcolor/2024/job_seekers_registration.cfm

·       To participate in the full conference (in addition to the career fair) go to: https://s4.goeshow.com/ccgroup/womenofcolor/2024/student_registration.cfm and select whether you will participate “in-person” (Detroit, MI) or “online”

·       The fee for the first 50 students will be waived by using the promotional code PCKDR84. The fee for attending the full online conference is $50. 

·     If you are interested in attending in-person and have not already notified the Career Center, please register on the WOC website (link above). You will be responsible for the hotel, airfare, and the $100 conference registration fee.
