The “SUCCESS Equation” has been presented at MIT, and will be published in Optics and Photonics News in September 2012. The equation looks at the momentum of variables such as mentoring and focus, and the workshop has been designed to help graduate students at every level to evaluate practices that can facilitate success.</div>

    <div>Dr. Lydia Villa-Komaroff was one of the founding members of the <a href="http://sacnas.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Society for the Advancement of Chicano and Native American Scientists (SACNAS)</a>. Dr. Villa-Komaroff is an internationally recognized molecular biologist. She was a key member of the team, directed by Dr. Walter Gilbert, that first demonstrated</div>
    <div>that bacterial cells could produce insulin.     <p><a href="http://brandywine.psu.edu/Academics/esparragoza.htm" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Dr. Ivan Esparragoza</strong></a> will join Dr. Villa-Komaroff for this special breakout session for postdocs, professors, and professionals. Dr. Esparragoza is a Mechanical Engineer, with degrees from Florida International University, Miami, FL,  and Universidad Del Norte, Barranquilla, Colombia.  Dr. Esparragoza has won teaching awards in the United States and abroad, and is leading<a href="http://www.engr.de.psu.edu/Ivan/NSFWorkshop.pdf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> international discussions in Engineering Education.</a>  He is one of the leaders of the <a href="http://www.laccei.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Latin and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions (LACCEI)</a>, and will discuss ways to allow your passion for teaching and mentoring contribute to tenure, awards, and participation in international initiatives, including upcoming conferences in Austria and Argentina. Dr. Esparragoza is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Penn State Brandywine.</p>
    <p><span><em>Dr. Ivan Esparragoza learned about PROMISE during a seminar at the Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions in Panama.  Dr. Esparragoza was especially interested in modeling programs that PROMISE sponsors such as Horizons for prospective students, and PROF-it (Professors-in-Training) initiatives. </em></span></p>

    <p>This session is essential for all new graduate students in every discipline. Using some of the information from Dr. Howard G. Adams’ books on mentoring, Sunji Jangha will take new students through exercises that will prepare them to have a successful year in graduate school. Jangha, an SSI speaker in 2010, returns by popular demand and will share some of his own experiences as a graduate student at Georgia Tech. Jangha is the Director of Math/Science Upward Bound at UMBC. Sloan Foundation Minority Ph.D. Program Fellowship sponsored by the <a href="http://www.nacme.org/home/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering</a> (NACME).  She presented her research on Capitol Hill in 2010, and after receiving faculty offers within and outside of Maryland, is looking forward to starting her new position this fall. The “SUCCESS Equation” has been presented at MIT, and will be published in Optics and Photonics News in September 2012. The equation looks at the momentum of variables such as mentoring and focus, and the workshop has been designed to help graduate students at every level to evaluate practices that can facilitate success.</div>

(Former National Graduate Student of the Year for the National Society of Black Engineers.) Dr. Westmoreland is a former LSAMP Bridge to the Doctorate Fellow, and was awarded the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Minority Ph.D. Program Fellowship sponsored by the <a href="http://www.nacme.org/home/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering</a> (NACME).  She presented her research on Capitol Hill in 2010, and after receiving faculty offers within and outside of Maryland, is looking forward to starting her new position this fall.     <p><a href="http://www.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC</a> will host the annual <a href="http://summerhorizons.wordpress.com/history-of-the-horizons-program/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Summer Horizons program</a> for undergraduate students and others who are interested in learning more about graduate school admission, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The 1-day workshop will feature sessions on the GRE, Statement of Purpose, Recommendation Letters, and other topics related to preparing for graduate school.  The keynote speaker will be the President of UMBC, <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2111975_2111976_2112119,00.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World.</a></p>

    <p><strong>This program is open to <span>anyone</span> who is interested in learning more about UMBC and the graduate admissions process.</strong>  The graduate school preparation material is applicable to most U.S. institutions.  Faculty and staff may invite prospective students to this event.  Visitors from out-of-town are welcome to attend.</p>

    <p><span>As part of the PROMISE Pathways project, undergraduate and master’s students  from schools within the University System of Maryland have a special invitation to attend.</span> We also invite students from all summer programs within the DC/Maryland/Virginia (DMV) region, and students who are either local or will travel the distance to learn more about graduate school.</p>
    <p>Invitations are also extended to:</p>
    <ul>
    <li>All UMBC undergraduate students</li>
    <li>Students from NSF programs such as LSAMP, AGEP, NSF ERC, RDE etc., at any school</li>
    <li>McNair programs at any school.</li>
    <li>Students from organizations such as SHPE, SACNAS, NSBE, and AISES at any school in the country are welcome to attend.</li>
    <li>We also invite professionals who are considering returning to graduate school for an advanced degree.</li>
    </ul>
    <p>Light refreshments and lunch will be provided. This program is free, but potential participants must register.</p>

<Title>Interested in applying to graduate school? Summer Horizons 2012 at UMBC on Weds. July 18</Title>

    <p><a href="http://www.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC</a> will host the annual <a href="http://summerhorizons.wordpress.com/history-of-the-horizons-program/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Summer Horizons program</a> for undergraduate students and others who are interested in learning more about graduate school admission, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The 1-day workshop will feature sessions on the GRE, Statement of Purpose, Recommendation Letters, and other topics related to preparing for graduate school.  The keynote speaker will be the President of UMBC, <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2111975_2111976_2112119,00.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World.</a></p>
    <ul>
    <li>Wednesday, July 18, 2012</li>
    <li>The program will begin at 9:30 AM and will end at 12:30 PM.</li>
    <li>Meyerhoff Chemistry Building, Room 120</li>
    </ul>
    <p><strong>This program is open to <span>anyone</span> who is interested in learning more about UMBC and the graduate admissions process.</strong>  The graduate school preparation material is applicable to most U.S. institutions.  Faculty and staff may invite prospective students to this event.  Visitors from out-of-town are welcome to attend.</p>
    <p><span><a href="http://promiseagep.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/usm_logo.jpg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><img src="http://promiseagep.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/usm_logo.jpg?w=86&amp;h=86" alt="" width="86" height="86" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></a></span></p>
    <p><span>As part of the PROMISE Pathways project, undergraduate and master’s students  from schools within the University System of Maryland have a special invitation to attend.</span> We also invite students from all summer programs within the DC/Maryland/Virginia (DMV) region, and students who are either local or will travel the distance to learn more about graduate school.</p>
    <p>Invitations are also extended to:</p>
    <ul>
    <li>All UMBC undergraduate students</li>
    <li>Students from NSF programs such as LSAMP, AGEP, NSF ERC, RDE etc., at any school</li>
    <li>McNair programs at any school.</li>
    <li>Students from organizations such as SHPE, SACNAS, NSBE, and AISES at any school in the country are welcome to attend.</li>
    <li>We also invite professionals who are considering returning to graduate school for an advanced degree.</li>
    </ul>
    <p>Light refreshments and lunch will be provided. This program is free, but potential participants must register.</p>

You may come to work on proposals, dissertations, grant applications, teaching portfolios, or any writing project that will move you closer to graduation.</p>
    <p> </p>
    <p><strong>Time and Location:</strong> 8:30 AM – 7:00 PM, nearly every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during the summer; Math/Psychology Building, Room 103, UMBC Campus.</p>
    <p><strong>Parking:</strong> Parking on UMBC’s campus requires a permit Monday 7:00 AM through Friday 3:30 PM. Parking in open spaces and lots without gates will be free on weekends, starting on Fridays at 3:30 PM, and ending Mondays at 7:00 AM. Visitor parking is available in metered lots. Meters are enforced year round Monday-Friday from 7:30 am – 9:00 pm. Meter fees are $.25 for each 15 minutes, quarters only, maximum time of 5 hours.</p>

<Title>PROMISE will visit The Aerospace Corporation, June 5, 2012</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>PROMISE will be visiting the Aerospace Corporation (<a href="http://www.aero.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://www.aero.org</a>) on Tuesday, June 5 at their Chantilly, VA office. In accordance with their mission, they would like to meet PROMISE graduate students (US citizens) in EE, CS, Aerospace, and Cybersecurity. They are hiring interns and would like to start a relationship with students who are interested in full-time positions or post-docs.  We have 10 spaces available for M.S. and Ph.D. students for this one-day trip? <span><em><strong>If  you are interested, please have them send your CVs, unofficial transcript, and a short paragraph that describes your interest to <a href="mailto:rtull@umbc.edu">rtull@umbc.edu</a>, with “Aerospace Corp.” in the subject line by Wednesday, May 9, 2012 . </strong></em></span> Lunch will be served on-site at Aerospace.  Aerospace Engineer, Dr. Clyde V. Moseberry has already been mentoring some of the students from PROMISE over the years.  He is looking forward to meeting the group.</p>
    <p>A van will leave UMBC’s campus, Administration Building at 8:30 AM, and is scheduled to return by 5:00 PM. The trip is co-sponsored by PROMISE and the Aerospace Corporation. There is no cost to the student.</p>

<Title>PROMISE will visit The Aerospace Corporation, June 5, 2012</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>PROMISE will be visiting the Aerospace Corporation (<a href="http://www.aero.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://www.aero.org</a>) on Tuesday, June 5 at their Chantilly, VA office. In accordance with their mission, they would like to meet PROMISE graduate students (US citizens) in EE, CS, Aerospace, and Cybersecurity. They are hiring interns and would like to start a relationship with students who are interested in full-time positions or post-docs.  We have 10 spaces available for M.S. and Ph.D. students for this one-day trip? <span><em><strong>If  you are interested, please have them send your CVs, unofficial transcript, and a short paragraph that describes your interest to <a href="mailto:rtull@umbc.edu">rtull@umbc.edu</a>, with “Aerospace Corp.” in the subject line by Wednesday, May 9, 2012 . </strong></em></span> Lunch will be served on-site at Aerospace.  Aerospace Engineer, Dr. Clyde V. Moseberry has already been mentoring some of the students from PROMISE over the years.  He is looking forward to meeting the group.</p>
    <p>A van will leave UMBC’s campus, Administration Building at 8:30 AM, and is scheduled to return by 5:00 PM. The trip is co-sponsored by PROMISE and the Aerospace Corporation. There is no cost to the student.</p>
