The SFI Complex Systems Summer School (CSSS) offers an intensive 4-week introduction to complex behavior in mathematical, physical, living, and social systems. Lectures are taught by the faculty of the Santa Fe Institute (SFI). The school is for students and professionals seeking to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries and ask big questions about real-world complex systems.

The program consists of an intensive series of lectures, labs, and discussion sessions focusing on foundational concepts, tools, and current topics in complexity science. Participants collaborate in developing novel research projects throughout the 4 weeks of the program that culminate in final presentations and papers.

Graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and professionals are eligible to apply. Women and members of underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

Graduate Workshop in Computational Social Science (GWCSS) 

June 17 – June 29, 2018

The workshop brings together a group of advanced graduate students and a small faculty for an intensive two-week study of computational social science. The workshop will consist of lectures by faculty, seminars by members of the Santa Fe Institute, and presentations of work in progress by graduate student participants.

The primary goal of the summer workshop is to assist graduate students pursuing research agendas which include a computational modeling component. A significant portion of the workshop will be devoted to analyzing and improving research being conducted by the graduate student participants.

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The summer intern will support the Multi-Asset Research Team by conducting financial and quantitative/statistical analysis usually at the asset class level, covering the areas of strategic and tactical asset allocation, financial planning research, data/infrastructure, and product design projects as needed.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Independently, or in collaboration with other quantitative or technical analysts, under the guidance of the Director of Research, execute research projects that have been identified to meet the investment needs of the broader Multi-Asset Division:
Identify the core issue and shape/design the project
Identify and absorb existing research on the subject (internal or external)
Identify (and procure) the most appropriate method/tool/dataset to address the issue

Execute operational duties, such as ongoing generation and maintenance of asset allocation related investment reports, data sets, or analytical infrastructure.

Perform data analysis and information gathering in response to ad hoc inquiries.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
Must be a Ph.D. candidate expected to graduate in May ’19 majoring in a quantitative discipline
Strong academic credentials and evidence of ability to independently deliver results
Experience programming in Matlab, Splus/R, Python, and SQL
Experience conducting empirical research working with large datasets
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; willingness to learn new approaches to problem-solving
Ability to work independently as well as a part of a team
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to multi-task and to simultaneously push forward several projects

Preferred
Interest in financial markets
Knowledge of investments, portfolios, and quantitative analysis

HRSA’s Office of Human Resources (OHR) is the hiring entity looking for an intern.  OHR  provides a variety of in-house services to all of the HRSA, including but not limited to: selection, recruitment, benefits, ethics, training, etc.  The internship focus would vary depending on placement within OHR but would be focused on developing the intern to accomplish special assignments during their internship.

USM PROMISE AGEP: Maryland Transformation is pleased to invite you to attend and participate in the 2018 University System of Maryland PROMISE AGEP Research Symposium and Professional Development Conference on February 16, 2018. This conference replaces the former PROMISE Research Symposium and adds a professional development component that will prepare graduate students and postdoctoral fellows for faculty positions in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM, which includes social sciences) disciplines. This year, PROMISE also invites undergraduate students to come to hear graduate students’ presentations, and to participate in workshops that will prepare them to be graduate students with an eye on becoming future faculty members.

This conference seeks to provide a venue that will allow students to present their work at any stage, receive feedback in preparation for presenting at larger venues, and provide training that will prepare participants for faculty careers.The event is free and meals are provided. We are pleased to announce the 5th Annual Academic Research and Leadership Network Symposium (ARLS).  This year’s symposium will be held in conjunction with the NSBE National Convention http://convention.nsbe.org/ from March 21-25th, 2018 in Pittsburg, PA. ARLS events will occur on March 23-24 and consist of a research symposium on March 23rd followed by a faculty/career development symposium on March 24th at the NSBE Convention site (Omni William Penn Hotel). We have a limited amount of funds available to provide $2000 ASSITS travel awards for graduate students, post-docs, and junior faculty (pre-tenure) participants.
