proposals?</li></ul></div><div>If any or all of these apply to you, then consider applying for entry into the University of Utah Grant Writing Coaching Research Study funded by the NIH Common Fund (NRMN)</a>  Writing groups are led by an accomplished, NIH-funded scientist who has been specially trained in the coaching group model.</div><br></div></td></tr></tbody></table><table border="0" colspan="1"><div>Upon selection, participants will be randomized into an intervention using a 2x2 factorial design to independently assess the influence of intervention dose and mode of institutional (i.e. local mentor) engagement with the coaching group.  Interviews with participants will be conducted to determine dyad eligibility and then they will be assigned into an arm.  The 4 research arms include: </div><div><br></div><div>1. regular coaching intervention with unstructured mentor engagement </div><div>2. regular coaching intervention with structured mentor engagement</div><div>3. regular and extended coaching intervention with unstructured mentor engagement</div><div>4. regular and extended coaching intervention with structured mentor engagement  </div><br><div>Regular coaching is 5-6 months of meetings to review and revise grant proposal drafts.  Extended coaching is 5-6 months of the regular coaching plus 6 months of additional coaching.  For unstructured coaching, the research study team will provide participants and their local mentors with a brief written set of recommendations for sharing and utilizing the coaching feedback that will be provided by the research study team. <Title>Spotlight! Guest Instructor Workshop</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>Are you interested in having more presentation opportunities? Here's your chance...</span></p><p><span>Two years ago, the Library created the “Spotlight! Guest Instructor Workshop” series. This series is where the Library invites members of the UMBC community to host a single lecture/talk during the academic year. The talk is held in the Library from 12-1pm.</span></p><p><span><span>We think this would be a great opportunity for graduate students, particularly those that will graduate soon, to present their content as a
    practice version for their defense presentation. Research can be completed or in progress. </span></span></p><p><span><span>The one hour long sessions are held in the Library throughout the academic year during free hour (MWF from 12-1pm) on a date to be determined.

<Title>The Graduate School at UMBC Dissertation Fellowship</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>The Dissertation Fellowship is designed to provide doctoral candidates at UMBC an opportunity to devote the necessary concentration and attention towards finishing the writing of their dissertations.  The Fellowship is specifically designed for students with full-time jobs off-campus, for those without any financial support who are making steady progress with their writing, and for whom having additional time and resources would permit them to complete the process more expeditiously.  </span><strong><em><u>This Fellowship is not available as an option for students with available graduate assistantship support.</u></em></strong><br><span> </span><br><span>The Dissertation Fellowship could provide promising doctoral candidates with financial support so that they may reduce their current obligations and partially offset any reductions in salary or increases in expenses.  No additional work assignments other than work on the dissertation are to be associated with this support. </span><br><span> </span><br><span>Priority will be given to students who demonstrate that the Fellowship will allow them the needed time to complete their writing and to make revisions in time to defend the work within a realistic but expeditious time frame.  Awards will be made to students who have demonstrated a commitment to provide at least 20 hours per week for an entire academic semester to writing the dissertation. </span><br><span> </span><br><span>Dissertation Fellowship awards are available for Summer 2020. </span><u>The duration of an award is for one semester.</u><span>  The maximum level of support for Summer is a total stipend of $3,275.00 per Fellowship plus tuition remission for two credits of 899. </span><br><span> </span><br><span>To be considered for a Dissertation Fellowship, the Ph.D. candidate must:</span><ul><li>be in good academic standing;</li><li>provide a letter of support from the Chair of the Dissertation Committee that<ol><li>describes the state of the dissertation and the probable impact of receipt of the Fellowship on the progress toward     completion; and,</li><li>verifies that no UMBC-administered financial support is available for the student;</li></ol></li><li>provide, if employed outside the university, written evidence from the student’s employer indicating the employer’s willingness to reduce job time and duties in order for the student to participate in the Fellowship;</li><li>submit a dissertation abstract of no more than two pages in length; and</li><li>submit a 1-2 page management plan signed by the Chair of the Dissertation Committee describing the status of the dissertation work, the steps required to complete the work, and the feasible timeline for completion; and</li><li>Identify, if a prior recipient of a Dissertation Fellowship, the prior term (e.g., Spring 2017) in which the Fellowship was received.</li></ul><strong>Applications for Summer 2020 Dissertation Fellowships will be accepted by the Office of the Associate Dean of the Graduate until Friday, April 3, 2020.</strong><span>  Completed applications may be submitted via email as a single PDF to </span><a href="mailto:DFSummer2020@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">DFSummer2020@umbc.edu</a><span> or hand-delivered to the Office of the Associate Dean of the Graduate School, Room 208, Administration Building, by 4:30 p.m. A committee consisting of three members of the Graduate School Leadership Team will review applications and announce recipients of the Fellowship by Wednesday, April 22, 2020.  Selection will be based on the extent of convincing evidence that the award will provide the critical element needed to complete the dissertation.</span></div>

<Title>NSF Dissertation Institute - FREE, Application Due March 8th</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The 2019 DI will take place June 7<sup>th</sup>– 12<sup>th</sup> on the University of Michigan campus. The Institute is funded by the NSF and hosted by University of Texas, Dallas and Virginia Tech. The primary goal is to address issues that prolong completion times for those at the dissertation proposal preparation and dissertation completion stages of the targeted population.</p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span>The FREE week-long event will focus on skills and strategies needed to successfully complete the dissertation process as well as provide networking opportunities to build connections for future collaborative career advancement. Institute participants will build new writing habits, work on their dissertation or dissertation proposal, and learn s</span>kills that will help them continue making progress when they return to their institutions. As an advisor, you would attend Orientation sessions where you would meet with undergraduate students one-on-one to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, all training necessary will be provided!</p><p><strong>Besides compensation, this is an excellent opportunity to gain professional and interpersonal experience.</strong> Depending on your field, your time as a student may not open you up to many client-facing interactions, and this is a pathway to gaining that experience. If you are considering a career in academia, meanwhile, advising experience is highly sought-after in faculty openings.</p><ul><li>Graduate students are eligible to be compensated at the rate of $100 per all-day session and $50 per evening session.</li></ul><p><strong>More details are provided in the application attached, which is due </strong><a href="https://advising.umbc.edu/orientation_upload/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span><strong>HERE</strong></span></a><span><strong> by May 1, 2020</strong>. Di Maria, Associate Vice Provost for International Education about a unique opportunity. <span>The Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi Foundation for Policy Research seeks to conduct and promote high quality research to help inform policymakers in Ras Al Khaimah, the United Arab Emirates, and broader Gulf region. To this end, the Foundation welcomes proposals from scholars in a wide range of disciplines and professional fields that address issues related to its research priority areas of education, health and well-being, and urban development and planning. Grant opportunities fall under the following categories:</span></p><ul><li><a href="http://www.alqasimifoundation.com/en/what-we-do-l3/2/doctoral-research-grants" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Doctoral Research Grants</a>: <span>Support PhD students in carrying out field research as part of their dissertation data collection. Comparative proposals are welcome as long as Ras Al Khaimah and the UAE are a significant research site. The award covers return economy airfares, furnished in-country accommodation (up to 12 months), and a modest cost of living stipend. Office space and research support are also provided.</span></li><li><a href="http://www.alqasimifoundation.com/en/what-we-do-l3/3/faculty-research-grants" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Faculty Research Grants</a>: <span>Support current faculty in conducting field research in Ras Al Khaimah and the UAE.     <div class="html-content"><strong>Fully funded BioEngineering Summer opportunity for grad students in the rainforests of Borneo and Singapore! Applications due March 1.</strong><div><strong><br></strong></div><div><p>IRES PROGRAM ON AUTONOMY IN NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS (for graduate students): Participants will study autonomous mobility in complex natural environments based on flying and gliding rainforest animals with the help of an interdisciplinary mentor network located in Korea, Singapore, and Brunei. Students will get an opportunity throughout the program to participate in professional development opportunities for IRES scholars and their mentors, led by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). The 13-week summer program will start with an orientation week at the Virginia Tech campus followed by a modular sequence of setup with an engineering mentor at either KAIST or the National University of Singapore (NUS), a biology immersion in Borneo at the University of Brunei (UBD), and finally a data analysis/engineering integration module at KAIST. <strong><em><u>The program will cover all cost and pay a $5000 fellowship to each participant.  </u></em></strong>Participants must be US-citizens/Greencard holders and graduate students.
