    <p><span>This seminar is part of the PROF-it (Professors-in-Training) series. Participants will learn how to develop a syllabus, manage time in the classroom, and plan content for the semester. Guest Facilitator: <strong>Dr. Linda Hodges</strong>, Director, <a href="http://fdc.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Faculty Development Center</a>.</span></p>

    <div><span>Linda C. Hodges, Director of the Faculty Development Center, was Director of the Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Center for Teaching and Learning at Princeton University from 2003-2009 before retiring to Maryland. She holds a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Kentucky and was a faculty member for over 20 years before transitioning into faculty development. Prior to coming to the McGraw Center in 2001, she was the William Rand Kenan, Jr. Professor of Chemistry at Agnes Scott College near Atlanta, Georgia. During her faculty tenure at two different institutions, she taught a wide range of courses, participated in faculty governance, and served as department chair. In 1999 she was one of 28 faculty members chosen nationally to study and assess new pedagogical approaches as a Carnegie Scholar of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. She has published widely on her work in faculty development, engaged student learning, and effective teaching practices. Her special interests are in pedagogies of engagement and the scholarship of teaching and learning.</span></div>

    <h4><span>The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs is extending an invitation to attend our Postdoctoral Morning Coffee breakfast session on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, from 10 AM to noon. Please take the opportunity to assist, come and meet the extended community of scholars working at USM campuses. </span></h4>
    <p><span>Dr. Chariz Peñalber-Johnstone will be the speaker of the session; she will be speaking about her <span>postdoctoral work at the Center for Advanced Sensor Technology at UMBC, her participation in discipline-specific conferences, and her continued engagement in the field. She will mainly share information on applying for travel funding to disseminate research. </span></span></p>
    <h4><span>Dr. Chariz Peñalber-Johnstone received a B.S. degree in Chemistry (Cum Laude) from The University of San Carlos in Cebu, Philippines in 2006, and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Houston, Houston, Texas, USA in 2012. Her graduate work was in the area of physical chemistry with a specific focus on the use of nonlinear optical spectroscopy for molecular-level structural analysis of ionic liquid surfaces. She has conducted studies at various interfaces to explain the physico-chemical properties of imidazolium and phosphonium-based ionic liquids relevant to their applications in catalysis.</span></h4>
    <h4><span><span><span>With her current appointment as a post-doctoral research associate at the Center for Advanced Sensor Technology at the University of Maryland Baltimore County in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, she contributes to both system design and protein expression sub-teams. She works cross-functionally in the development of a device that will produce, purify, and quantitatively determine a ready-for-delivery therapeutic protein in a few hours.</span></span> The project includes the design of innovative mammalian in vitro protein expression and purification technologies combined with advances in microfluidics and microelectronics to produce biologics on-site.<span> </span></span></h4>

    <p>The NASA Postdoctoral Program offers U.S. and international scientists the opportunity to advance their research while contributing to NASA’s scientific goals. The NPP supports fundamental science; explores the undiscovered; promotes intellectual growth; and encourages scientific connections.</p>
    <p>Selected by a competitive peer-review process, NPP Fellows complete one- to three-year Fellowship appointments that advance NASA’s missions in earth science, heliophysics, planetary science, astrophysics, space bioscience, aeronautics and engineering, human exploration and space operations, and astrobiology.</p>

    <p>Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in hand before beginning the fellowship but may apply while completing the degree requirements. U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents, and foreign nationals eligible for J-1 status as a Research Scholar may apply.</p>
    <p>Stipends start at $53,500 per year, with supplements for high cost-of-living areas and for certain academic specialties. Financial assistance is available for relocation as well as subsidized health insurance, and $8,000 per year is provided for professional and programmatic travel.</p>

They have given workshops at Harvard, MIT, UMBC, Howard, the University of Puerto Rico, and other schools, and have collectively assisted students with earning millions of dollars in fellowship award money.     <p><span><a href="http://www.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC</a> will host the <a href="http://summerhorizons.wordpress.com/history-of-the-horizons-program/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Summer Horizons 2017 program</a> for undergraduate students and others who are interested in learning more about graduate school admission, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The 3-hour workshop will feature sessions on the application timeline, GRE, Statement of Purpose, Recommendation Letters, and other topics related to preparing for graduate school.  There will be a panel hosted by current graduate students, and the keynote speaker will be the President of UMBC, <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2111975_2111976_2112119,00.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Freeman A.     <p><span><strong>The 2017 Summer Horizons program is open to <span><em>anyone</em></span> who is interested in learning more about UMBC and the graduate admissions process.</strong>  The graduate school preparation material that we will present is applicable to most U.S. institutions.  Faculty and staff may invite prospective students to this event.  Visitors from out-of-town are welcome to attend. Invitations are  extended to:</span></p>

    <li><span>As part of the PROMISE Pathways project, undergraduate and master’s students  from schools within the University System of Maryland (USM) have a special invitation to attend</span></li>

    <li><span>Students from NSF programs such as LSAMP, AGEP, NSF ERC, RDE etc., at any school</span></li>
