Concern and Support for UMBC’s Muslim Community Dear UMBC Community,

We are deeply saddened and concerned to learn about a reported hate-bias crime in The Commons Tuesday night. A UMBC student reported that she was approached by an unknown male who attempted to pull off her hijab, the traditional headscarf worn by some Muslim women.

Acts such as this have no place at UMBC. Hate and bias are counter to UMBC values, especially our community’s deep commitment to diversity and inclusion and welcoming people of all backgrounds.

UMBC Police are investigating, and the Division of Student Affairs and Office of Equity and Inclusion have reached out to the student, as well as other students impacted, including the Muslim Student Association, Student Government Association (SGA), and the Graduate Student Association (GSA).

The UMBC community is invited to a community care space for support and dialogue on Monday, November 22, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The event will be held in the Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being at The Center for Well-Being, and is a collaboration between Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion, and Belonging (i3b); the Muslim Student Association; SGA; and GSA. Counselors from Retriever Integrated Health will be on-site to provide additional support as needed. Imam Yaseen Shaikh from The Islamic Society of Baltimore and Rabbi Jeremy Fierstein, chair of the UMBC Religious Council, will also be on-site to provide additional support as needed. The front patio of The Center for Well-Being will be used as a back-up location if needed to accommodate COVID-19 capacity expectations.

Students in need of support can contact i3b at i3b@umbc.edu. Faculty and staff can access support through the Employee Assistance Program.

We are committed to offering a safe and inclusive campus environment where community members and visitors of all backgrounds feel that they belong.

Dear UMBC Community, 

As you make your personal plans for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and accompanying break, please take a moment to consider the safety precautions you need to consider to keep our community healthy. We ask that you:

1. Review CDC guidance on domestic and international travel.

2. Consider the most effective way to minimize your risk as you gather with friends and family, particularly if there are individuals in your family who are unvaccinated or at a higher risk of COVID-19 complications. The CDC provides excellent advice on Safer Ways to Celebrate Holidays. 

3. Test if necessary. Fully vaccinated community members without symptoms are not required to test but may use on-campus testing if they think they may have been exposed. Any community member who is not fully vaccinated is required to test immediately upon returning to campus. More information on testing is available here.

4. Stay healthy! If you have not already, please consider getting a flu shot. If you are sick, do not come to campus. If you are exposed to someone who has COVID-19, review our response and reporting protocols before returning to campus.

We have had tremendous success at keeping our campus healthy and controlling the spread of COVID-19. We appreciate everything you are doing and ask for your ongoing support as we continue this effort.

The Graduate Student Association in collaboration with the Alex Brown Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation is coming up with a virtual leadership workshop titled "Entrepreneurship, the Entrepreneurial Mindset and Leadership" this Thursday, at 1 pm.

Whether students are interested in exploring entrepreneurship as a career choice or intend to follow a more traditional path, the Alex Brown Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation has the resources to help them on their way.

This workshop will essentially focus on defining entrepreneurship, key aspects of the E mindset, how they are used in any business, and how they are important for good leadership.

The workshop is open to all graduate students at UMBC. However, it is well suited for students who aspire to pursue a career in Entrepreneurship.

From The Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards:

As you may know, we conduct full and formal judicial review hearings for students who request them. A student might request a board hearing if they are charged with something serious, for which the termination of their housing contract or disciplinary suspension/dismissal is a likely outcome. They might also request a hearing if they are refuting the charges and believe they are not responsible for the alleged misconduct. Our Code of Student Conduct specifies that judicial boards are composed of between 2-4 students and one faculty or staff member. If you have been in a hearing before, you know that our board members are well-trained, thoughtful, and rigorous in their questioning. Although we have many "friends of Student Conduct" that have volunteered to help out in the faculty/staff capacity, I want to avoid repeatedly shoulder-tapping these same folks, if possible.

So I'd like to open up this opportunity for others to assist us in this crucial aspect of our operation. This is a chance for you to foster the accountability-taking and ethical decision-making capacity of our students and also to get a "good student affairs experience."  ALL OF THESE HEARINGS ARE VIRTUAL AND YOU CAN PARTICIPATE FROM YOUR OFFICE OR REMOTE WORK LOCATION. 

Here are the hearing dates and times that remain unfilled for the Fall Semester of 2021 (please consider signing up for the early dates, which are typically the hardest for me to fill):
December 10, 1:00-6:00 PM
December 14 (Tuesday, Study Day) 9:00 AM-1:00 PM

With all that said, please consult your calendar and email me with the date(s) you are available and willing to help out. I will reply and ask you to put a tentative hold on your calendar and then confirm the specific time and nature of the hearing when we get closer to the actual date. Thanks again for your support of this important task!

Here are a few caveats: 1) Before you volunteer, make sure you are in conversation with your supervisor, and 2) Our hearings occasionally run past 5:00 PM, so if you are on a tight timeline because of family or social commitments, just be aware that once you commit it is really important to have you be available "for the duration" whatever that ends up looking like.

This event will be hosted in COMM 328 on Wednesday November 17th, 2021.

We really enjoyed seeing you in person last month, catching up, eating donuts, and drinking coffee! As such, we've decided to host another  informal gathering at Commons 328 and hope you will join us. We will once again provide some coffee and donuts to share and invite you to stop to say hi and catch up with us and other graduate students.

We (Dr. Robin Cresiski and Yarazeth Medina) will be available to talk about the Grad Student and Postdoc Development Office (GSPD), PROMISE, the calendar of professional development events, our latest Netflix Binges, and hopefully, create an opportunity for you to meet fellow grad students in other departments. We would love to help you develop a deeper sense of community here on campus. If you just feel like stopping for free coffee and a donut, you are more than welcome to do so as well! 

Please click on "Going" below so we can be sure to have enough coffee and donuts for all who plan to attend. 

As this is an in-person event, please RSVP so we can be sure we are following safety guidelines per UMBC. Additionally, if you must cancel, please be sure to do it within 24 hours of the event's occurrence.

What Can You Be with a PhD? is the largest PhD career symposium in the country. The symposium has over 40 different career path sessions and professional development workshops featuring over 100 speakers over two days.
 

WCUB is hosted biennially by NYU School of Medicine with the support of a consortium of 15 other universities and research institutions around the New York City metropolitan area. WCUB also features exhibitors from companies from different industries that hire doctorates.


This symposium is a unique opportunity for graduate students and postdocs to learn about the breadth of career paths for doctorates and a fantastic place to network with the next generation of scientists.
