Women's Center Winter 2021-2022 Hours of Operation:

Through the winter, the Women's Center staff will be working remotely  and in-person. We encourage campus community members to contact us through email at womenscenter@umbc.edu or via phone at 410-455-2714. Staff will generally be most available between the hours of 10am - 4pm. We appreciate your patience in our response to your email or returning your phone call.

December 14th to December 17th: Reduced Hours

On Study Day (Tuesday, 12/14), 12/15, and 12/16, the Women's Center lounge will be open from 10 am to 5 pm. On 12/17, the Women's Center will be open from 10 am to 4 pm. 


December 20th to January 2nd: Lounge Closed + Staff Remote 12/20-12/22
Staff will be working and available remotely on 12/20 to 12/22. Staff will be out 12/23 until the end of the holiday and the office will be fully closed.

January 3rd to January 28th: Reduced Hours
Starting 1/3, the Women's Center will be open on a Tuesday through Thursday schedule from 10 am to 3 pm. On Mondays and Fridays, the Women's Center lounge space will be closed and professional staff will be working remotely; outside of the lounge hours, Women's Center staff are still available to meet and connect with the UMBC community as requested (see more below). Spring semester hours will resume 1/31.

The Women's Center lactation room continues to be available by reservation. For details, contact us at womenscenter@umbc.edu.

Individualized Support Meetings:
Women's Center professional staff are available for individual meetings and support which we can provide via phone or video chat and in some cases in-person; to schedule an appointment, email womenscenter@umbc.edu or call 410-455-2714. If you are already working with a specific staff member and need to set up additional meetings, feel free to reach out to the staff member you have been working with directly (via email or even g-chat!).

Greetings All. Some things to note regarding the Fall Commencement Ceremony, December 21, 2021. 
The Volunteer roles are not yet posted on the link from the volunteer form. As we finalize logistics these roles may change.
The two main needs for the graduate volunteers we be:   
  • Getting graduates to their seats (there will not be a procession).
  • Assisting the Event Center staff with seating guests (Ushers)
PLEASE complete the form (link below). We have to have an accurate head count.

1) In order to maximize the number of graduates and guests that we can accommodate in the EC, we had to split the undergraduate ceremony into two ceremonies, as we do in the spring. So there will be a total of 3 ceremonies this winter. 
2) There will not be a student line-up in the halls of the EC, or a procession of graduates. Graduates will enter the EC and go directly to their seats. Right now we are working with William at the EC to maximize safe seating for our graduates, but we will be using the floor along with 2 sections of the lower bowl for graduates.
3) Graduates will still walk across the stage
4) Due to the lack of floor space, and the need to physically distance and reduce interactions, the Alumni Association will not be handing out their gift to the graduates after they cross the stage.
5) In order to limit the number of physical interactions, we are going to have graduates scan their own floor passes using a stationary scanner. We will still need to have stage assistants on the stage to assist those that have difficulty scanning their cards.
6) The only faculty and staff participating will be those that have a role in hooding PhD graduates in the Grad School ceremony on Tuesday, December 21. This means that we do not have a procession of F&S, and therefore, no faculty/staff line-up role for volunteers.
7) There will be a Platform Party at each ceremony, the procession of the PP will likely look different. As we are working with William at the EC to maximize safe seating for our graduates, we realize that there may not be room for a center aisle, so more details still need to be worked out on this.

Please know that while we do appreciate each and every volunteer, we know that some of you will not feel comfortable volunteering this year, and we understand that. Private Spaces for Participating in Virtual Appointments with Community-Based Mental Health Providers 


The Center for Well-Being and Erickson Hall have reservable, private spaces from which students may participate in virtual appointments with their community-based mental health providers. These are available between 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday when the campus is open. To reserve a space, please send an email with your desired reservation date and time to privatecounselingspace@umbc.edu. If we cannot accommodate your request, we will get back to you to discuss other available times. All reservation requests should be made at least 72 hours in advance.

The Graduate Student Association in collaboration with Scott Morgan, President of The Morgan Group of Washington is hosting a virtual leadership workshop titled "3 Minute Thesis / The Gritty Talks Training Session" on Dec 7th, at 1 pm.

The workshop is open to all graduate students at UMBC. However, it is well suited for students who are interested in participating in 3 Minute Thesis, PowerPoint Roulette, The Gritty Talks, or Ideathon events.

This is a short Ted-like talk for Graduate Students. Students will be given 5 to 7 minutes to talk about any open ended ideas, something that is new and surprising or just an idea or invention that the audience has never heard about.
