Sherman Hall’s Phase 1 renovation is complete, creating space for creative collaboration

Shishineh and her team were relocated two years ago because of the renovations to temporary offices that were shared with them by the Academic Success Center. Now as they settle into their new office space—shared with two offices who await their new space in the east wing—Shishineh celebrates the infrastructural improvements and also the new opportunities for collaboration that weren't possible before.

Laila Shishineh's new office in Sherman Hall, overlooking the east wing and the under-construction courtyard. (Tanzila Malik/UMBC)

Under a plan developed by Shishineh alongside Facilities Management, ATP, UIA, and INDS, the new suite space in Sherman Hall's west wing will be shared by these offices, with hoteling space available for days when employees overlap. This collaboration of 17 people allows flexibility for people to work in the office some days and work from home on other days.

This physical proximity to other departments allows for unique opportunities of collaboration between them. "It's so nice to have a suite space," says Shishineh. "People get to build new relationships and support each other in different ways as opposed to just being 'doors in a hallway' somewhere on campus."

(Left to right): INDS uses the new conference space for a team meeting; Shishineh speaks with members of Facilities Management about shared space use. (Tanzila Malik, Kayla Logue/UMBC)

As a former resident assistant in college, Shishineh thought of creating an office-mate agreement, based on the concept of a roommate agreement. Across the three departments, people were paired up based on schedule, personalities, and types of roles. A meet and greet was held so everyone could get to know their officemate, and outline an agreement. The agreements include everything from what days each person is working in the office or from home, to how much shelf space they each get.

Student-centered design

Shared office of Tim Olivella (ATP) and Jose Arenas Gómez (INDS). (Kayla Logue/UMBC)
The new physical structure of Sherman Hall not only allows for more collaboration among the faculty and staff working there, but also for students. A noticeable difference in the layout is the student-centered design: with plenty of collaborative spaces including lounges, conference/study rooms, vending machines, and TVs broadcasting events happening on campus.

"I hope it becomes a place where students come not just for classes, but to hangout, study, and congregate," says Shishineh. Improvements have also been made to make wayfinding easier in Sherman Hall, since the two wings make some things difficult to find. New signage, room numbering, general space layouts and color-coding help everyone more easily find their way.

A feature to look forward to is the courtyard between the east and west wings of Sherman Hall. This multi-tiered green space with new ramps and stairs will provide gathering places and outdoor classroom opportunities at each level when the entire renovation is complete.

Construction and cost, with a mind for sustainability

At the beginning of the project, UMBC evaluated tearing down Sherman Hall and rebuilding it, versus a significant renovation. It was determined that the structure was still very solid and the cost of a new structure could be as much as 40 percent of the cost of a building, says Stacy Brian, the Facilities Management project manager for the renovation. By renovating instead of starting new, money was saved on excavation, underground utilities to serve the building, new foundations, new steel structure, new stair and elevator shafts and new floor slabs, and more.

But to complete the job, Sherman Hall needed to be gutted down to the bones of the building, with only concrete floor slabs and steel structure remaining. Just about everything else is brand new, says Brian: New elevators, HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical, walls, ceilings, roof, fire alarm and protection systems, finishes, IT/AV, etc.

Renderings courtesy of Facilities Management show the linked lobby addition with student lounge and study spaces, Sherman Hall's updated lecture hall, student lounge and study/waiting area between classes; and the outdoor terrace courtyard.
Besides the bottom-line cost, there were more considerations for taking on the renovation. Believe it or not, but "tearing this building down completely in the heart of campus would also have been much more disruptive than what we are experiencing now," says Brian.

The campus utility tunnel wraps all around Sherman Hall, so a significant amount of money would have been spent on protecting the tunnel so that heating, cooling, and power across all of campus wouldn't be disrupted.

Faculty and staff gather together in advance of Homecoming at the new entryway of Sherman Hall. (Brad Ziegler/UMBC)
There were also considerations regarding the environmental sustainability of the project. "It was definitely 'greener' (more sustainable) to use as much existing structure as possible to save those items from the landfill, the generation of more embedded carbon, etc.," says Brian.

Additionally, Sherman Hall is now much more energy efficient, greatly reducing not only UMBC's carbon footprint but also saving money on utilities. These savings can provide UMBC the opportunity to spend that money on other important upgrades across the campus. Some of the new features include much larger windows, which bring more daylight into the rooms. Students, staff, and faculty can all benefit from more daylight for their mental health and general well-being.

Renderings from Facilities Management show Sherman Hall's new front entrance opposite the University Center, rendering of Sherman Hall as viewed from Math/Psych.
"This project has been a shining example of how all of the different departments from many different UMBC divisions can come together and accomplish a very difficult task," says John Zahor, assistant vice president for Facilities Management.

From sharing offices, providing earbuds to get through the noise of construction, and putting up with all the other disruptions necessary for a project like this, Zahor says that the building's returning occupants have remained open and flexible, and that's made all the difference. Zahor says without the cooperation of many folks across campus, an already difficult task would have been impossible. Thanks to Craig Goodwin, the director of design and construction, Molly Power, UMBC's campus planner in charge of the temporary space planning and Elyse Clegg, manager of facilities support services, and Joe Washington, moving/logistics coordinator and the student workforce supervisor, "This was a job well done," says Zahor.

"We hope to be done by the beginning of the 2027 spring semester to give this wonderful building back to the campus community without fences and temporary signs, ready for full use," says Zahor.

PRAC 096 Student Reflections

<Tagline>RE is a program that shows unity, love, and gratitude - Dera</Tagline>

We were fortunate to have one of the most dedicated group of student volunteers, both Student Ambassadors and Direct-Service Volunteers, through the Shriver Center's PRAC 096 working with us in Fall 2019. Here are some of their reflections about serving UMBC through Retriever Essentials. We look forward to starting Spring 2020 with a similar level of passion and grit!

Kenneth Addo: Volunteering at Retriever Essentials has been very rewarding for me. I learned about a program that helps students who are food insecure and how to help contribute. This service has broadened my mind on the different problems students may face on campus and I am glad to be able to help them out.

Tamia Bowers: My time spent volunteering with Retriever Essentials this semester has gone above my expectations as compared to my previous volunteer experience. Concise, rewarding, and manageable. I’ve enjoyed much of my time while serving to better my community and fill the needs of those who utilize the services of RE. There is no doubt that RE's impact can be seen throughout our humble campus and will continue to grow and provide our community with the support, care, and respect that has grown within the program.

Fehintola Elizabeth Bright-Awonuga: Coming to UMBC as a freshman last school year I became affiliated with Retriever Essentials through the Shriver Center’s PRAC 096. I have volunteered with Retriever Essentials for two years now and I am now a part of the Student Leadership Board. I have the growth over the past two years and the impact it has had on the lives of fellow faculty, staff, and students. I do not regret my decision of joining this team because I have seen the first-hand the seed this organization has sown. The seed is continuing to sprout, grow, and blossom into something bigger than it once was.

Alex Gwizdala: Volunteering with Retriever Essentials was a great way for me to feel connected to the UMBC community. As a first-semester freshman, I was feeling out of place on campus when the semester started. When I started volunteering, I felt much more involved in the community. Being able to meet so many great people and knowing that my work was having an impact was an amazingly rewarding experience.

Stephen Isabell: Retriever essentials is a necessity. Retriever Essentials is full of love, teamwork, and community. While volunteering for Retriever Essentials, I felt every one of those things I felt so empowered that I am apart of the solution to ending food security. No one should have to go hungry in this world.

Stephanie Koshy: I started volunteering at Retriever Essentials at the beginning of my first semester at UMBC. When starting college, I wanted to find an organization that I could volunteer at that was similar to the volunteer work I did at my high school. Luckily, I was able to find that Retriever Essentials, I have enjoyed working with Retriever Essentials to help other students on campus overcome food insecurity. I learned a lot about food insecurity and how we can combat this worldwide problem through Retriever Essentials at UMBC. I look forward to volunteering in the Spring.

Brian Lynch: Working with Retriever Essentials made me feel fulfilled. Everyone I worked with was part of a larger community helping those in need. I enjoyed sauntering around campus in the crisp fall air to deliver and pick up food bags. Moving shelves to the new pantry was an exciting time as well. Retriever Essentials made me realize the problem of food insecurity on campus and how to address it.

Zara Mahmood: Retriever Essentials has been a great group to work with in my first year as a UMBC student. Working with them has made me feel integrated in the school. Being a part of such an amazing group that impacts so many lives has been a wonderful experience. Everyone in Retriever Essentials is very welcoming which makes it better.

Dera Osuigwe: Have you ever felt the love of a community? Have you ever seen people from different works of life come together to tackle a problem? Have you ever seen people so passionate about what they do? Well, let me tell you, I HAVE!! Retriever Essentials is a place where people give their time and joy. It is a place where students come from a community to help the community. Retriever Essentials is a program that shows unity, love, and gratitude.

Sabtain Saroya: Retriever Essential is a community of like-minded individuals influencing the broader UMBC community in an impactful way. This amazing organization is setting a precedent for what it means to/how to fight the issue of food insecurity.

Zoe Smith: Retriever Essentials is an incredibly unique experience. Although the distribution of the food bags is anonymous and done by campus partners, rather than the pantry itself, it is still incredibly easy to see the impact of the program. From seeing food fly off the shelves as campus partners request more bags to deliver the bags and seeing how excited the staff are for the new bags the appreciation for Retriever Essentials is evident and helps you feel that you really are helping to make a difference in your own community.

He described the experience as fun, and that it was a nice way to bond with coworkers. “I have done work like this before, and it is nice to be able to help out a place that serves others.” said Boyle.

“To have any type of positive impact is the most important part of it for me.”

Community service such as this helps the center out greatly. Rather than having regular volunteers focus on the landscaping, it frees them up to serve the people who come to the TRRC to the best of their abilities.

“I see serving others in any way as an important part of my life,” said Boyle. “To have any type of positive impact is the most important part of it for me.”

This type of community outreach creates a much different experience than most are used to. Instead of being in an office setting, the Instructional Technology team was outside working together, with each member taking on a different section of weeds, which worked out well to clear them out in an efficient manner.

“... Even the smallest change makes a huge impact!”

After dealing with those prickly weeds, the area is now clear and mulch was placed to control the return of the weeds.

Holly Owens, Instructional Technology Specialist, said “It’s important to me as a member of the UMBC community to reach out and be involved, even the smallest change makes a huge impact!” Owens had previously only done yard work at her home prior to volunteering at the TRRC and encourages others to go out and make a difference.

“I think the most fulfilling thing about this is experience is knowing that we made a difference and were able to help others.” said Owens.

Mariann Hawken, Instructional Technology Specialist, is no stranger to this type of community outreach. On a regular basis, she volunteers for her son’s bowling league, which provides a team experience with free equipment and coaching for disabled players. That same team experience was also present at the TRRC. Hawken said, "It was a nice experience to volunteer, especially as a team."

“Working together ensured we were able to get the job done and it gave our team a chance to do something that required a different kind of collaboration and cooperation.” said Hawken.

"...they should find something they have interest and passion for and give their time."

Braxton-Lieber would love to have this type of service at the TRRC become a yearly commitment but also wants more DoIT employees to get involved anywhere. “There are so many nonprofits in Maryland that need the support,” said Braxton-Lieber. “They should find something they have interest in and passion for and give their time.”

In a letter to the team, Dr. Helen Tuel, Founding Director at the TRRC, thanked the team for the amount of work they did around the center. Tuel said “Thank you for believing in the work we do and for giving the children in our care hopeful futures full of possibilities with much potential and brimming with success.”

From left to right: Sherri Braxton-Lieber, Mariann Hawken, Brad Boyle, Indigo (Sherri’s Horse) and Holly Owens.

If you want to learn more about the TRRC or volunteer to help out, you can contact Sherri Braxton-Lieber at sblieber@umbc.edu

You can also contact Dr. Helen Tuel at info@trrcmd.org
