DoIT Blocks Email Sent from Foreign Countries by UMBC Account Holders Not on Gmail

Clarification: VPN does NOT need to be used for email access via Webmail at webmail.umbc.edu.

Starting Friday, June 8th if you have not migrated your email to Gmail@UMBC, and are sending email from outside of the United States, you will first need to login to our virtual private network (VPN) vpn.umbc.edu. Once you have successfully logged into the VPN you will be able to connect to our Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) servers from your email client and send your messages.

NOTE: If you don’t login to the VPN while outside the United States you will NOT be able to send any emails. If you have already migrated to Gmail@UMBC you don’t need to worry about using the VPN, just login like you normally would at gmail.umbc.edu

    Why is this being done?
UMBC will begin blocking access to our SMTP servers from outside the United States. We are implementing this solution to address the recent attacks by spammers that have caused issues with email delivery over the past two weekends.

How do I migrate my email to Gmail@UMBC?
Migrating to Gmail@UMBC is easy. Please see our knowledge base article on how to migrate:

Now available: University Senates records

Interested in learning how UMBC developed their parking policy? Want to discover how the general education program emerged and why we have the current degree requirements? How about how the campus handled the turbulence of the late 1960s?

Come explore the records of the University Senates, housed at UMBC’s Special Collections. The University Senates records include the papers of the UMBC Assembly, UMBC Senate, Faculty Senate, Student Government Association (SGA), Undergraduate Council, Professional Associate Staff Senate (PASS), and Classified Staff Senate (CSS). The collection, which is 54.5 linear feet (or almost 20 3' shelves), features records from the University’s founding in 1966 through 2006 and it will continue to grow as more records are transferred. Records available include meeting minutes, transcripts, agendas, correspondence, bylaws, recommendations to the UMBC administration, committee reports, budgets, and election materials. These records will help reveal the various conflicts involved in the University’s transition from a small satellite campus to a modern research university.

<Tagline>Now available!</Tagline>

The Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is pleased to announce the release of their Disaster and Emergency Preparedness Plan. Produced by the Library’s Disaster Preparedness Working Group, the plan covers emergency procedures relating to the security of Library staff and patrons during health, fire, or weather-related emergencies. Also covered are the security and recovery of collections held within the Library, including the rare and unique items in UMBC’s Special Collections. Recovery procedures for a variety of material formats are included and workflows to prevent collections damage in the anticipation of an emergency have been developed. When possible, available guidelines and procedures were used in place of developing local practices. A Salvage Team will be established within the Library to provide recovery training and ensure that the plan remains up-to-date.

The plan was developed by the Library’s Disaster Preparedness Working Group in consultation with the Library Executive Committee, and relied heavily on existing documentation provided by the Library Guidelines, UMBC campus policies, the Baltimore Academic Libraries Consortium’s Disaster Preparedness Plan (1998, rev. 2006), “Developing a Disaster Plan” Lyrasis workshop (2010), the Federal Library & Information Center Committee Preservation Institute (2009), and the Northeast Document Conservation Center’s Preservation 101 online course.

The Library’s Disaster and Emergency Preparedness Plan is available online at:http://aok.lib.umbc.edu/admin/DisasterPlan_2012.pdf [pdf]

Please direct any questions to Lindsey Loeper, lindseyloeper@umbc.edu or 410-455-6290.
