After deciding with her husband Bryan to relocate to Illinois, she has accepted a position as Education Coordinator in the Illinois Informatics Institute at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. I thought I knew a thing or two about Blackboard, but I bow to her expertise and will miss it greatly. We all will. Beyond her rock solid leadership of DoIT’s instructional technology services and support, Karin has been a delightful colleague and friend. I’ve never worked with a more “can do” person, and will miss her energy and anecdotes.

Karin returns to Illinois roots having studied at Urbana-Champaign and working at DePaul University. She came to UMBC’s Geography & Environmental Systems (GES) Department in 1999, rising to the rank of Senior Lecturer and serving as Undergraduate Program Director.
Cavanuagh camera exhibit in the Library Rotunda

<Tagline>Open May 21 – August 11, 2013</Tagline>

This Spring semester, History graduate student Dot Alexander worked with Chief Curator Tom Beck to research and design an exhibit of cameras from the Library's Cavanaugh collection. Please enjoy Dot's report below:

Come to the Library Rotunda this summer and see a collection of vintage cameras. Imagine a world without Instagram and instant photography! This camera collection demonstrates twentieth-century technical innovations that shifted photography from a professional, time consuming hobby to an amateur sport.

The twentieth century changed how and why we took photographs. Cameras had faster mechanical shutters, rangefinders, exposure meters, flash, and automatic technology. They became smaller, easier to use, and after the first CPU (central processing unit) in 1981—smarter! These cameras show us how we got from the first Kodak in 1888 to the iPhone.
Pictured above: Kodak Vest Pocket Model B c.1925-c.1934

Featured cameras include a Kodak Premoette c.1909-1912, an Ernemann Heag IV c.1925, an early Polaroid c. 1955, and pioneer 35 mm cameras such as the Argus A and the Kodak 35. Cameras donated to Special Collections by William B. Cavanaugh (June 2, 1924-January 19, 2013)

Remember: Special Collections is open by appointment during the summer semester!

Thank you, Dot!

Progress underway on Baltimore history manuscript

<Tagline>One intern's report!</Tagline>

History graduate student Shae Adams worked in Special Collections this Spring with the Joseph L. Arnold manuscript. She has provided us with this report from the scene!

Intern Shae Adams here with breaking news from your very own Special Collections: Something exciting is happening in Special Collections! (Ed. note: something exciting is always happening in Special Collections.) We are partnering with the UMBC history department to bring you a digitized history of Baltimore that you can access from the comfort of your living room. Over the course of the semester I have begun compiling and editing a manuscript written by the late Dr. Joseph Arnold, a former UMBC history professor. The manuscript provides an overview of the history of Baltimore from its founding in 1730 to the beginnings of suburbanization in the 1920s with plenty of dramatic events in between. Dr. Arnold’s work explores the heroism of Baltimoreans during the War of 1812, the bitter divisions within the city during the Civil War, alongside the triumphs and tragedies of immigrants determined to find acceptance in their new home.

The manuscript is currently in the editing phases. But progress has been made! Only a few months ago, the book existed only as a jumble of chapters and revisions arranged in archival boxes. Now the chapters have been reunited in a single document ready for final content editing. Through the continued partnership with the history department, Special Collections has high hopes that the manuscript will become an integral part in growing UMBC’s presence in the digital humanities following its online publication.

Stay posted for further updates on this story as it unfolds!

Thank you, Shae!

Jerry Stephany papers now available at Special Collections

UMBC’s Special Collections holds a world class collection of photographs. With over 2 million images, including those by Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus, and Berenice Abbott, the Photography Collection includes a vast array of photographic treasures. Former UMBC Photography professor Jaromir “Jerry” Stephany deserves much of the thanks for this collection. An influential photographer and teacher, Stephany’s papers now sit alongside the collection he helped build. Stephany’s papers, which are open to the public, hold insights not only into Stephany’s teaching career, but also his personal life and the general history of photography.

Jerry Stephany was born in Rochester, NY in 1930. During the Cold War, Stephany trained as a combat photographer and served at Rhein-Main Air Force Base in Germany. In 1956, Stephany received his degree from Rochester Institute of Technology, where he studied under famed photographers Ralph Hattersly and Minor White. Four years later, Stephany earned a Master of Fine Art from Indiana University, where he studied Cliché Verre under the guidance of photographer Henry Holmes Smith.

Stephany first began teaching the history of photography when working on staff at the George Eastman House. In 1966, Stephany moved to Baltimore to start teaching at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). At MICA, Stephany served as the chair of the department of photography and film.

In 1973, Stephany left MICA to become an Associate Professor of Photography UMBC. At UMBC, Stephany established the Photography program. Under his guidance, UMBC’s Special Collections began developing its Photography Collections. Even after his formal retirement in 1999, Stephany remained an active member of the UMBC community, continuing to teach a history of photography course and serving on the Council of the Friends of the Library and Gallery at UMBC.

Stephany exhibited his photographs at a number of venues, including the George Eastman House, Baltimore Museum of Modern Art, UMBC Library, Smithsonian Institution, and the International Center of Photography. With his photography, Stephany held a constant fascination with the abstract and science fiction. Throughout his career, he would also return to the Cliché Verre technique.

In April 2010, UMBC’s Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery hosted a long-planned retrospective of Stephany’s photographs with an emphasis on Cliché Verre, titled Music of the Mind: Jaromir Stephany Photographs and Digital Images. That same month, Stephany passed away. Two years after his death, in 2012, Tom Beck and Emily Hauver published the exhibition catalog, which is now available for purchase.

The Jaromir Stephany papers contain records relating to Stephany’s work as a photographer and educator, as well as his personal papers. Included in this collection are professional and personal correspondence, teaching materials, personal photographs, genealogical records, and files from Stephany’s exhibitions. There are also personal writings, interviews of Stephany, and audio-recordings of lectures given by other photographers. The papers were processed by History Graduate students Robin Martin, Johanna Schein, and Dorothy Alexander under the guidance of Archivist Lindsey Loeper.

Want to come look at the records yourself? Contact Special Collections to set up an appointment at x52353 or speccoll@umbc.edu. We also hold open research hours on Monday through Friday, 1pm to 4pm, with additional hours from 4pm to 8pm Thursday nights.

This post was written by Special Collections Graduate Assistant Johanna Schein.
