Information about the Goucher Prison Education Partnership

The Goucher Prison Education Partnership (GPEP), a division of Goucher College, gives men and women incarcerated in Maryland the opportunity to pursue an excellent college education. We offer Goucher College courses to students at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women (MCIW) and the Maryland Correctional Institution – Jessup (MCIJ). We also provide college preparatory courses for students needing additional skill development to be ready for rigorous college work.

The entire Goucher academic community is enhanced and strengthened by the inclusion of these talented, dedicated students at the two prisons. Our work together stimulates awareness and meaningful dialogue in and beyond the Goucher community about justice, incarceration, and educational access.

    Teaching With GPEP

College courses are taught by Goucher College faculty and occasionally by faculty from other local institutions. The same outstanding courses offered on Goucher’s main campus are offered at MCIW and MCIJ. We also hire skilled instructors to lead college preparatory English and math courses.

Individuals interested in learning more about opportunities to teach with GPEP should visit our website www.goucher.edu/GPEP<http://www.goucher.edu/GPEP>. Those wishing to apply should send a cover letter and resume to GPEPteach@goucher.edu<mailto:GPEPteach@goucher.edu>. We have a particular need for highly qualified math instructors for courses including pre-algebra, algebra I, algebra II, precalculus, statistics, and calculus I.

Other ways to become involved

A cohort of skilled community members volunteer with the Goucher Prison Education Partnership. We have a particular need for math tutors and for individuals who can commit to offer 5 or more hours per week of office help. To find out more, please visit our website www.goucher.edu/GPEP<http://www.goucher.edu/GPEP>

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has been selected to participate in an “Enhancing Student Financial Education” project for 2013-2015. Chosen as one of 15 awardees in a national competition, UMBC received a grant from the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS), a non-profit organization (www.cgsnet.org) dedicated to advancing graduate education and research. Funded by a grant from TIAA-CREF, a leading financial services organization, CGS will develop models for providing financial education resources that help undergraduate and graduate students manage their money and hone their financial and debt management skills.
Go LIVE! Seminars: UMBC will develop “Go Live” seminars that will showcase financial literacy resources on a new, interactive website. The online topics and segments will be coupled with “live” seminars that will be held throughout the year. Seminar topics include: Graduate Funding, Improving Credit Ratings, Financial Transitions, Life-long, Financial Planning, Budgets, and more.

DoIT Recommends Changes In Clicker Channel Settings

<Tagline>Reduces likelihood of interference with wireless network</Tagline>

The Division of Information Technology has been working with Turning Technologies to determine the optimum channel for clicker use so as avoid conflict with our campus wireless network, which was greatly enhanced this summer.

As a result of this review, please be advised that DoIT changed the Turning Point clicker channels on lecture hall computers on Friday afternoon, September 19. The new channel will be posted on the PC monitor and there will also be a sign facing the students. The channel was changed to reduce the possibility of RF interference with the system.

DoIT set the receivers in the lecture halls to channel 25 except ITE102 (LH8) which was set to channel 50. The reason for setting LH8 to a different channel is because of the proximity to LH7.

Instructors using their own receiver and laptop should select a channel between 74-82.

Turning Technologies has reviewed our recommendation and concurred.

Instructors:

To change/verify the channel on a computer (also found in Turning Point documentation):

1. Select the Polling tab in the TP software

2. The Receiver icon is located on the upper gray bar. If the PC channel does not match the posted channel, click on the icon.

3. Select the recommended channel. Laptop TP users should use a channel between 74 and 82.

4. Close the window.

Students:

To change the channel on a clicker (also found in Turning Point documentation):

1. Press the CH or Channel button (older response cards have a 'Go' button).

2. Enter the two digit channel for your location.

3. Press CH, Channel, or 'Go' again.

4. When the ResponseCard receives the new channel, the the light will turn green.

The reason for this change is that clickers use 1MHz channels within the 2.4GHz frequency band. On campus, we primarily use channels 1, 6 and 11 for wireless, which is occupied by the clicker channels 1-23, 26-48, and 51-73. To ensure that there is minimal interference, Turning Technologies recommends that devices are programmed on channels 24, 25, 49, 50, and 60-82.

More information from DoIT:

https://wiki.umbc.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=41190437&src=search

https://wiki.umbc.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=27297178&src=search

More information from Turning Technologies:

http://www.turningtechnologies.com/pdf/International/Turning-Technologies-RF-Interoperability-v1_1.pdf

For questions or concerns, please contact AV Services (X52461).
