<Title>Fall Blackboard Drop-in Hours</Title>

    <div class="html-content">To support faculty ongoing Blackboard support needs,  DoIT will be offering additional weekly drop-in hours beginning Wednesday, August 20. A DoIT staff member will be available to work one-on-one with users who show up during the designated times.<br><br>Drop-In sessions will focus on one of the many tools we support, including the following:<br><ul><li><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/display/faq/Tips+for+Faculty+-+About+the+Grade+Center" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Grade Center</a></li><li><a href="http://doit.umbc.edu/itnm/managing-content/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Adaptive Release</a></li><li><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/display/faq/Blackboard+Collaborate" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Collaborate</a></li><li><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/display/faq/Camtasia+Relay" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Camtasia Relay </a></li></ul>Given variation in user needs and scheduling, the Drop-In format will be as follows:<br><ol><li><strong>Orientation</strong> (5 minutes): A quick overview of what the tool does. If all you want is a demo, come early.</li><li><strong>Recommendations</strong> (10 minutes): 1-2 tips based on our observations from providing faculty support, as well identification of effective practices  and practitioners.</li><li><strong>Q &amp; A</strong> (40 minutes): This is your time. What do you want to know? What's a problem you'd like to solve or a new opportunity you'd like to explore?</li></ol>In addition to the F2F sessions, DoIT will also offer virtual drop-in sessions using Blackboard's web-conferencing tool, <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/display/faq/Blackboard+Collaborate?src=search" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Collaborate</a>. Previously, Dr. Colón served the U.S. Department of State as the Science and Environment Adviser at the Western Hemisphere Affairs Bureau where she was responsible for advising on environmental and scientific issues that affected the U.S. Government’s foreign policy objectives in the Americas. During that time, Dr. Colón coordinated climate change policy for the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas announced by President Obama in 2009.  As a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow (2006-2008), Dr. Colón led the OES Bureau’s program for Muslim world outreach through K-12 science and math education cooperation. Dr. Colón earned her Ph.D. in neuroscience in 2004 from Brandeis University and her B.S. in biology in 1997 from the University of Puerto Rico.</em></p>

    <p><em>Dr. Karsonya (Kaye) Wise Whitehead is Assistant Professor of Communication and African and African American Studies at Loyola University Maryland; the Founding Executive Director of The Emilie Frances Davis Center for Education, Research, and Culture; a K-12 Master Teacher in African American History; an award-winning curriculum writer and lesson plan developer; an award-winning former Baltimore City middle school teacher; and, a three-time New York Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in the Language, Literacy, and Culture program, her M.A. from the University of Notre Dame, Indiana in International Peace Studies, and her B.A. from Lincoln University, PA. In 2014, Whitehead was selected to moderate the White House’s Black History Month Panel co-sponsored by President Obama and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History ASALH; she was one of the featured speakers at the 2014 Youth Mentoring Summit at the U.S. Capital in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington; and, she was one of four experts selected nationwide to present at the White House’s 2013 Black History Month Panel co-sponsored by President Obama and ASALH. </em></p>
    <p><em>Dr. Whitehead was a winner of both the Langston Hughes, David Diop, Etheridge Knight Poetry Award (1999, 2000) and the Zora Neale Hurston Creative Writing Award (1998) from the Gwendolyn Brooks Creative Writing Center at the University of Chicago. She has trained over 2500 K-12 teachers throughout the country in how to become culturally responsive teachers in diverse environments. She wrote and helped to create Dr. Camille Cosby and Renee Poussaint’s Civil Rights Movement website With All Deliberate Speed, including their March on Washington Curriculum Package; and, has written lesson plans and history curriculums for schools, museums, historical societies, cultural centers, and state and local history agents. Dr. Whitehead is the author of several book chapters, articles, and three books, Notes from a Colored Girl: The Civil War Pocket Diaries of Emilie Frances Davis (USC Press, 2014); Sparking the Genius: The Carter G. Woodson Lecture (Apprentice House, 2014); The Emancipation Proclamation: Race Relations on the Eve of Reconstruction (Routledge, fall 2014); and, the co-editor of Rethinking Emilie Frances Davis: Lesson Plans for Teaching her 1863-1865 Civil War Pocket Diaries (Apprentice House). </em></p>

    <p><em>Dr. Janet C. Rutledge is the Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). She has held this position since 2009; she served as the interim Vice Provost for a year preceding this. Prior to this appointment, Rutledge served as the Associate Dean and Senior Associate Dean of the Graduate School at UMBC. Rutledge has worked as a Program Director at the National Science Foundation and as an Assistant Professor at Northwestern University. </em></p>
    <p><em>Rutledge received her BS from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1983. In 1984, she completed her MS from the Georgia Institute of Technology and in 1989 she earned PhD from the same institution. Rutledge is the winner of numerous awards including: the Rensselaer Alumni Association Albert Fox Demers Medal and the Northwestern University Associated Student Government Faculty Honor Roll (Teaching Award). She has also been named a Georgia Tech Outstanding Young Engineering Alumni; Today’s Chicago Woman, “100 Women Making a Difference”; and is a member of Sigma Xi’s Scientific Research Society.</em></p>

Previously, Dr. Colón served the U.S. Department of State as the Science and Environment Adviser at the Western Hemisphere Affairs Bureau where she was responsible for advising on environmental and scientific issues that affected the U.S. Government’s foreign policy objectives in the Americas. During that time, Dr. Colón coordinated climate change policy for the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas announced by President Obama in 2009.  As a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow (2006-2008), Dr. Colón led the OES Bureau’s program for Muslim world outreach through K-12 science and math education cooperation. Dr. Colón earned her Ph.D. in neuroscience in 2004 from Brandeis University and her B.S. in biology in 1997 from the University of Puerto Rico.</em></p>

She received her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in the Language, Literacy, and Culture program, her M.A. from the University of Notre Dame, Indiana in International Peace Studies, and her B.A. from Lincoln University, PA. In 2014, Whitehead was selected to moderate the White House’s Black History Month Panel co-sponsored by President Obama and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History ASALH; she was one of the featured speakers at the 2014 Youth Mentoring Summit at the U.S. Capital in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington; and, she was one of four experts selected nationwide to present at the White House’s 2013 Black History Month Panel co-sponsored by President Obama and ASALH. </em></p>
    <p><em>Dr. Whitehead was a winner of both the Langston Hughes, David Diop, Etheridge Knight Poetry Award (1999, 2000) and the Zora Neale Hurston Creative Writing Award (1998) from the Gwendolyn Brooks Creative Writing Center at the University of Chicago. She has trained over 2500 K-12 teachers throughout the country in how to become culturally responsive teachers in diverse environments. She wrote and helped to create Dr. Camille Cosby and Renee Poussaint’s Civil Rights Movement website With All Deliberate Speed, including their March on Washington Curriculum Package; and, has written lesson plans and history curriculums for schools, museums, historical societies, cultural centers, and state and local history agents. Dr. Whitehead is the author of several book chapters, articles, and three books, Notes from a Colored Girl: The Civil War Pocket Diaries of Emilie Frances Davis (USC Press, 2014); Sparking the Genius: The Carter G.     <p><em>Dr. Janet C. Rutledge is the Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). She has held this position since 2009; she served as the interim Vice Provost for a year preceding this. Prior to this appointment, Rutledge served as the Associate Dean and Senior Associate Dean of the Graduate School at UMBC. Rutledge has worked as a Program Director at the National Science Foundation and as an Assistant Professor at Northwestern University. </em></p>
    <p><em>Rutledge received her BS from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1983. In 1984, she completed her MS from the Georgia Institute of Technology and in 1989 she earned PhD from the same institution. Rutledge is the winner of numerous awards including: the Rensselaer Alumni Association Albert Fox Demers Medal and the Northwestern University Associated Student Government Faculty Honor Roll (Teaching Award). She has also been named a Georgia Tech Outstanding Young Engineering Alumni; Today’s Chicago Woman, “100 Women Making a Difference”; and is a member of Sigma Xi’s Scientific Research Society.</em></p>

    <p>The University of Maryland, College Park  and PROMISE Maryland’s AGEP are sponsoring a system-wide Dissertation House for graduate students in STEM programs.  The writing and research retreat will take place at the Hotel at Arundel Preserve.   Lodging for 2 nights and meals are provided for student participants.   Twelve students from the USM system schools will be chosen to participate in this research and writing retreat.  <a href="http://www.thehotelarundel.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://www.thehotelarundel.com/</a></p>

    <p><strong>University System of Maryland (USM) Dissertation House at the PROMISE Summer Success Institute – August 14-15, 2014</strong></p>
    <p>The University of Maryland, College Park  and PROMISE Maryland’s AGEP are sponsoring a system-wide Dissertation House for graduate students in STEM programs.  The writing and research retreat will take place at the Hotel at Arundel Preserve.   Lodging for 2 nights and meals are provided for student participants.   Twelve students from the USM system schools will be chosen to participate in this research and writing retreat.  <a href="http://www.thehotelarundel.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://www.thehotelarundel.com/</a></p>

    <p>Per NSF.gov: <em>AGEP is committed to the national goal of increasing the numbers of underrepresented minorities (URMs), including those with disabilities, entering and completing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduate education and postdoctoral training to levels representative of the available pool.     <div class="html-content"> <h1><span>We salute our Associate Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Robert Deluty on the publication of his 45th book: "Gifts in Disguise." </span></h1><h1><br></h1><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Dr. Deluty's book of short poems allows readers to reflect on the many stories that are artfully told in a few words.  </span><span>The opening poem, "Nineteen Years Later," describes the kindness of a college counselor, and the impact that a simple act of compassion had on a young woman's life. </span><span>When you read page 40, you'll smile, recognizing that the thesaurus is not extinct. An inward chuckle may also arise as you read page 73 and remember Leo Tolstoy's novel, "War and Peace."</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Enjoy your own copy of one of Dr. Deluty's books. <Title>The research content should be the challenge, not the dissertation process</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><a href="https://dissertationhouse.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/20140708_091555.jpg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><img src="https://dissertationhouse.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/20140708_091555.jpg?w=300&amp;h=168" alt="20140708_091555" width="300" height="168" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></a><span>T</span>his morning, Dr. Wendy Carter-Veale opened the Summer 2014 Dissertation House at UMBC with a story about her own dissertation process. She said that part of the motivation for her current passion as a “Dissertation Coach” is that the <em><strong>research content should be the challenge; the dissertation PROCESS should not be the challenge</strong></em>. The PROMISE Dissertation Houses help graduate students through the process. We do not write students’ dissertations, we do not edit students’ dissertations. We do provide coaching and advice, and we do eliminate the mystery behind the process of PhD completion. You still have to work with your advisor and your committee. You still have to work within the rules and regulations of your academic department. However, the Dissertation House can help you with interpreting some of those nuances that accompany the dissertation process.</p>
