<Title>Goucher Prison Education Partnership Seeks Volunteers for 11/23 session</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The PROF-it (Professors-in-Training) program has partnerships with several incredibly unique learning institutions. Below, you will find information about volunteering or becoming part of the instructional faculty for the Goucher Prison Education Partnership (GPEP), serving the learning needs of students who are incarcerated. <span><strong>This SUNDAY</strong></span>, November 23, 2014, please consider attending the information session for prospective instructors and volunteers.</p>
    <p>The Goucher Prison Education Partnership (GPEP) offers Goucher College courses and college preparatory courses to students at two Maryland prisons.</p>
    <p><strong>If you are interested in working with GPEP during the Spring 2015 semester, be sure to attend this information session: </strong></p>

    Goucher Prison Education Partnership<br>

    <p><strong>Volunteer positions include:</strong></p>
    <ol>
    <li><strong>Tutors:</strong> Tutors commit to at least one evening of tutoring per week for the full semester and attend several tutor trainings on the main campus. Tutors should be able to assist with academic writing (across the disciplines), math (PreAlgebra, Algebra I &amp; Algebra II, Statistics, Precalculus, and/or Calculus) and/or Intermediate to advances Spanish language (speaking, reading and writing). The ideal candidate is someone with demonstrated success in advanced academic work with some teaching or tutoring experience.  Next semester, tutoring will take place on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6-8:30 pm. *<span>Faculty, staff, undergraduate upperclassmen, graduate students, and other adult professionals from the Baltimore community are invited to apply for this role.*</span> (Goucher students: Current and former writing tutors and SIs are strongly encouraged to apply.)</li>
    <li><strong>Research assistants:</strong> Research assistants serve as a bridge to key academic resources, gathering materials needed by incarcerated students to complete research papers and other academic projects. These assistants work closely with a specific professor and carefully follow institutional and programmatic guidelines regarding materials brought to the prisons. The ideal candidate should be conscientious, a problem solver, and able to work independently.</li>
    <li><strong>Administrative Help:</strong> A small number of volunteers provide administrative support. This work includes creating student files, assisting with various types of communications, data entry, and other tasks. Candidates should be detail oriented and willing to pitch in where needed. Familiarity with Excel a plus. (Administrative help takes place on Goucher’s main campus, not at the prisons.)</li>
    </ol>
    <p><strong>Prospective Faculty: </strong></p>
    <p>We also seek faculty interested in leading Goucher college and college preparatory courses at the prisons. We have a particular need for skilled math faculty at this time. Selected faculty typically lead a single course and are paid.</p>

<Title>sites.umbc.edu Scheduled Maintenance 12/6/2014</Title>

    <div class="html-content">On Saturday December 6th, 2014 we will be upgrading the software running the sites.umbc.edu environment. Maintenance is scheduled for the whole day. The sites.umbc.edu website Admin Dashboard will be down during part of the process, however there will only be a brief period during which websites may be offline.<br><br>This software upgrade includes:<br><ul><li>Improved page editor, including a "Distraction Free" editing mode</li><li>Better "Media" management for your site</li><li>Additional internal changes to improve stability and security</li></ul><br>As with all upgrades, it is a good idea to check over your site once it has been completed just to ensure no issues have arisen.</div>

    </span></span></span><span>Faculty &amp; staff are entitled to the same
    applications at home (the full collection) as the institution itself.</span><span></span></p><p><span><span>·<span>       
    </span></span></span><span>Upon redemption, the Creative Cloud Manager desktop
    application is installed. That application allows Faculty and Staff to download
    some or all of the Creative Cloud applications at their discretion and
    convenience. If Faculty or Staff originally downloaded some number of
    applications – and later determines they need others - they can certainly come
    back at a later time to download any additional applications by using the
    Creative Cloud Manager application. </span><span></span></p><p><span><span>·<span>       
    </span></span></span><span>Redemption codes are tied to a Faculty and Staff’s Adobe

<Title>Campus Help System (RT) hits new milestone</Title>

    <div class="html-content">UMBC uses an open source system called Request Tracker (RT) from a company named BestPractical to provide help to the UMBC campus community at large. In fact UMBC has been recognized on the BestPractical website as one of their many success stories citing an August 2013 Educause Online Review article called <a href="http://www.educause.edu/ero/article/beyond-it-help-desk" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Beyond the IT Help Desk.</a><br><br>On Tue Nov 11, 2014 14:11:24 RT received its 500,000th ticket since going live Feb 23, 2009.<br><br>In this time RT has grown from a DoIT centric Help System to a campus wide system serving 25+ areas on campus, and growing. RT has also expanded from a typical trouble ticket system to also include service type request for both internal and external operations across many areas of campus.<br><br>As of Nov 12, 2014 RT has recorded 94,934 tickets for the 2014 calendar year.<br><br>The acceptance of RT as a mechanism to provide a common support has created increased interest by many of our higher educations peers and this is a tribute to the 'UMBC way' as many of our peers have stated how fortunate we are to have such broad collaborations.<br><br>RT has also been nicely complemented by our FAQ system (umbc.edu/faq) to allow the community to try and solve their own issues, especially in off hours.<br><br>Our latest members to adopt RT for managing their back office support include Procurement and Student Affairs Business Service Center. <br><br>We are also working with the CNMS Business Service Center, the PAHB operations staff, and the MME Technical Center.<br><br>Lastly, I would like to thank everyone involved with RT for the continued support and feedback.<br><br>Joe Kirby<br></div>

<Title>Online Learning Consortium Offers Free Faculty Training</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Through a University System of Maryland partnership with the Online Learning Consortium (OLC), DoIT is pleased to offer an exceptional online training opportunity to UMBC full-time and part-time faculty.<div><br></div><div>The OLC workshop format utilizes proven teaching strategies and learning activities while modeling best practices for online and hybrid learning. Collaborate with peers and experiences via synchronous (live) and asynchronous environments. Normally these workshop cost about $300 each, but our partnership provides a limited number of seats at no cost to UMBC faculty.</div><div><br></div><div><a href="http://onlinelearningconsortium.org/learn/workshops/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Topics include</a>:<div><ul><li>Creating an Interactive Syllabus</li><li>Designing a Flipped Classroom</li><li>Exploring Competency Based Instruction</li><li>Finding &amp; Using Open Educational Resources</li><li>Introduction to Copyright &amp; Fair Use (parts 1 &amp; 2)</li></ul></div><div>Additionally, OLC offers the Fundamentals series:</div></div><div><ul><li>Fundamentals: Increasing Interaction &amp; Engagement</li><li>Fundamentals: Supporting New Online Learners</li><li>Fundamentals: Frameworks for Quality Design</li><li>Fundamentals: Engagement Learners in Online Discussion</li><li>Fundamentals: Giving Effective Feedback</li><li>Fundamentals: ADA &amp; Web Accessibility</li></ul></div><div>Finally, OLC has the New to Online series:</div><div><ul><li>New to Online: Essentials</li><li>New to Online: Introduction to Online Presentation Tools</li><li>New to Online: Converting Your Course</li><li>New to Online: Putting Your Content Online</li></ul></div><div><span>These workshops require a time commitment of 3-7 days on average with some lasting up to 3 weeks. All workshops are delivered online with either a synchronous or asynchronous component. A <a href="http://onlinelearningconsortium.org/learn/workshops/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">full list of workshop titles</a> is available through next year, but faculty must sign-up by March 31, 2015.
