Preparing The Retriever Weekly for UMBC's 50th Anniversary

<Tagline>The paper will be fully digitized in Fall 2015</Tagline>

This post was written by Special Collections student assistant Jen Wachtel. Thank you, Jen!

The Retriever Weekly, our university’s proud
student newspaper, began publishing as UMBC
    News in 1966. Special Collections
and the University Archives maintain the print copies of all issues of the Retriever, and a large section of the issues (1966-1981 and 2002 to the present) are available online in UMBC's Digital Collections. With monetary support from UMBC's Office of Institutional Advancement, students and staff have been preparing to send the remaining issues to Creekside Digital, a digitization vendor located a short drive away in Glen Arm, MD. This project is a part of the Lyrasis Digitization Collaborative.

I conducted an inventory of the issues of the Retriever dating from January 1983 to May 1997, totaling over four hundred newspapers. Along the way, I found insights into some of UMBC’s hot-button topics of the 1980s and 1990s, including contentious construction projects and students’ demands for increased parking spaces (ed. note - complaining about parking is a long-standing UMBC tradition!). I particularly enjoyed following the timeline of the university administration, including the appointment of one Freeman A. Hrabowski III to Vice Provost at UMBC and his later position as Interim President for a “full academic year and possibly longer.” Of course, no inventory of The Retriever would be complete without the satirical Deceiver. Published annually on the week of April 1st, the Deceiver featured such choice headlines as “Giant Terrapin attacks UMBC” (referring to College Park’s mascot) and “SCHPORTZ” (1993).

Jen Wachtel working in Special Collections.

I also noticed some strange anomalies in The Retriever’s numbering system. From miswritten Roman numerals (XXVIV for 29 and IXX for 24) to a startling continuity error, the Retriever always had special surprises in store. The most bizarre circumstance was that in the academic year 1995-96, the Retriever accidentally published two separate versions of Volume 31 – one for fall, and one for spring, before continuing with Volumes 32 and 33 in 1996-97. This means that since spring 1996, every volume of The Retriever has been one number short!

Special Collections is located on the first floor of the library behind the gallery. We are open Monday through Friday from 1-4pm, on Thursdays from 1-8pm, and by appointment.

DoIT Recommends Course Copy vs Export/Import

<Tagline>Beginning SU2015: Quickly recycle courses & connect content</Tagline>

Over many years, Blackboard courses at UMBC were exported out of and imported back into the system. This process met a specific need at a specific time, and continues to provide a way for faculty to save course materials in a digital archive. We are pleased, however, to soon launch Course Copy, a new tool to streamline the reuse and preparation of course content each semester.

The Course Copy tool is convenient way to reuse and adapt existing course structures, materials, and content. With a few clicks, faculty can identify the course to receive the incoming content, choose some or all course content, and trigger the copying process. Compared to export/import, the Course Copy process is faster. Faculty do not have to submit the export request in one Blackboard course, download a package file only to re-upload it to another course for processing. With the Course Copy process, no file is needed to download or upload.

Faculty can copy all or part of the content into a new course or an existing course. The Blackboard course copy tool will only add content to a course; it will never delete or overwrite existing content. This is a good way to copy part of one course into another without overwriting any of the existing course's content. For example, if an instructor just wants to copy Course Documents, she can select only that content area.

Best Practices for Recycling & Reusing Content

Plan on using Course Copy for the long term -- it is the preferred way among many institutions to recycle course content every semester.

Support for the Export tool will be gradually reduced. You should plan to only use the Export tool to create an archive for your records and then store the package in Box.

Request a master course shell to centralize all of your course's content and never lose a document, resource or learning object again!

Keeping those export packages can contribute to course bloat. We recommend that faculty delete packages from the course export page after downloading. Each package counts against the course quota and keeping packages may result in limited space to add additional content to the course.

Upcoming Training

The Course Copy tool, and several other new resources, will be available at the end of the SP2015 term for use during SU2015 and beyond. Two training sessions are planned:

Tuesday, April 28 (12-12:50 pm)

Tuesday, May 12 (1-1:50 pm)

To pre-register for either of these sessions, please select the linked session title and click the green "I Can Attend" button on the event page. We also recommend adding the workshop to your calendar.

Whether for a traditional, hybrid or online course, cultivating and maintaining the content in a course shell in Blackboard requires an investment of time and effort. Many faculty understandably want to preserve these resources and learning objects. The Course Copy tool provides a convenient and easy way.

From Desktone, you can access virtual lab computers with all of the software available in the general use computer labs on campus, so if you only have a Mac and you need to use Windows this is the tool for you. It’s available 24/7 and can support up to 100 simultaneous users.

A simple search on myUMBC for "Desktone" takes you directly to the FAQ page for it. From here, students simply have to hit the giant “Click here for Desktone” banner and you are taken to a page where you have two key options: launch by downloading the Desktone software on your computer or you can connect to your virtual desktop through your own browser. If you decide to install Desktone, you’ll see optimal performance and is highly recommended.

The best part is there is no account creation necessary, using your own UMBC login credentials you can load up your own virtual desktop in no time. There is no need to be on UMBC’s own network either, so if you’re at home you can still access your virtual desktop.

Reny Thomas, an Information Systems major, uses desktone to get around his own computer’s limitations. Thomas said “Personally, this solved a huge issue for me. I currently use a chromebook, and I love everything about it. I can’t really install software. I was amazed when I was able to run windows via the VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure) and I could code Visual Basic through my chromebook.”

Having a virtual desktop does not mean you still can’t manage your own computer at the same time. “Since [Desktone] is accessed via an online link I can have it as a tab on my browser.” Thomas said “This allows me to use it as any other tab, and I am still able to access my personal files.”

Any issues students may run into have troubleshooting steps conveniently located on the UMBC Desktop FAQ page. Desktone supports both iOS and Android as well and each have their own apps to download.

Some may think that simply going to the computer labs would benefit just as much. As Thomas puts it, “As long as the UMBC lab computers have the software the student needs, then the VDI is a perfect solution.”

Faculty Screencasting: Winning before Beginning

<Tagline>Student Class Readiness Using TechSmith Relay</Tagline>

Over the course of the past year, approximately 40 faculty and staff members have made use of UMBC’s supported screencasting tool, TechSmith Relay, to record over 400 recordings. This application is easy to use and configure, and it allows users to create how-to videos, capture lecture presentations (e.g., as a solution for inclement weather), and adapt their pedagogy to support their learners’ needs. This article highlights two TechSmith Relay users’ experiences with this tool.

Dr. Brian Grodsky is an associate professor of Political Science, and teaches 200-400 level courses. He’s made nearly 250 recordings since adapting TechSmith Relay for tests and both in-class and online discussions. For online classes, Dr. Grodsky uses lecture recordings along with readings as the basis for tests and online discussion. Dr. Grodsky chunks his lecture recordings into 5-15 minute, digestible pieces, which is an identified best practice for screencasting in order to support learner engagement with the content. "I think the tool is generally great….I definitely recommend using this," says Dr. Grodsky, who believes this tool has opened numerous opportunities to delve more deeply into the course content during class discussions.

Dr. Stephen Mang is a Lecturer with the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. He uses TechSmith Relay videos to introduce students to chemicals, their reactions, and equipment prior to laboratory experiments. He also makes short (5-10 minute) introductory videos that address discrete concepts from readings for students to watch prior to class to facilitate in-class discussion. Dr. Mang says he’s found these videos "really help in terms of the number of students who come to class ready to discuss the material."

Dr. Mang’s impressions of the tool are also very positive, and he too would recommend any faculty use Relay, and particularly those who teach labs. "The videos can be an excellent supplement to that lecture, letting you change what you focus on during the in-person lecture and helping students really understand what they're going to be doing in lab that day."

If you are a faculty member interested in getting started using TechSmith Relay, simply submit an RT ticket, and DoIT will work with you to get up and running.

Institutional Advancement records now available

<Tagline>A new collection in the University Archives</Tagline>

This post was written by Special Collections Graduate Assistant Nichole Zang. Thank you, Nichole!

UMBC Special Collections is pleased to announce that the Office of Institutional Advancement records are now open to researchers! This collection contains newspaper clippings, press releases, Office of Arts and Management publications, and information on UMBC faculty and departments from the 1960s through 2009. This collection is useful tool for any researcher looking into the university’s exciting past.

The first series of the collection is composed of about forty years of newspaper clippings relating to UMBC. The many clippings in these files share parallels for what we may see around campus today. In August of 1975, for example, construction on the Library Pond began as a flood control dam, creating a scene not unlike the one students walk past on their way to class every day. Come see what other exciting news stories were written about UMBC over the past 50 years!

For anyone looking for the university’s statements on university events between 1963 and 1991, this is also the collection to choose! Series II of the collection contains press releases from those years, arranged by date. The Office of University Relations created the releases for the media in order to inform them of commencements, awards ceremonies, campus events, and other university news. One of these releases describes the festivities of the Fine Arts Building’s open house in November 1975.
