Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present a "Hagy For President" pin from the second SGA elections at UMBC.
"Student Action Party Hagy For President" pin. University Archives, Special Collections, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Baltimore, MD)
Darryl Hagy was UMBC's second Student Government Association president. As a member of the Student Action Party, Hagy was passionate about getting UMBC students engaged in activism and social change. For instance, he formed the College Council on Human Relations, an innovative committee focused on service learning and community involvement. During his SGA presidency, the UMBC campus also organized an event in correspondence with the National Time-Out Day in Fall of 1968 called a "Bitch-In." The campus stopped classes for the day and invited students to discuss and speak out on topics like cooperative housing, fraternities, racism, and student power.

Birth Control Education Seminars Available at UHS!

Thinking about getting on birth control? Want to change from the one you're on now? Confused on which one to pick from all of the options? Then schedule a FREE contraception education seminar at UHS via our Health Education Office! We'll go over everything you want to know about each birth control method and help you explore the best methods for your lifestyle.
We can even cover information about STI's and how to prepare for your first GYN exam if you are getting one.

pirizarry@umbc.edu or call 410-455-1558. This can be an individual appointment, or you can even bring your partner/friends/roommates with you and make it a group education session. The session only lasts 30-60 minutes.

Teams can be up to 5 people. Only 10 teams total will be accepted on a first come first serve basis. Each team will receive a bag of 300 condoms to use in their art project. You must pick up your bag by Monday, Nov. 30th by 5pm!!!
To enter the contest, please contact Mickey Irizarry at pirizarry@umbc.edu with your team member information. You must enter your team no later than Monday, November 30th.
Teams will be expected to bring their final projects to our
World AIDS Day event on
Tuesday, Dec. 1st from 4:30-7pm in The Commons Sports Zone. Drop off by 4pm. Students will have the opportunity to view all 10 projects and vote on their favorite one. Each member of the winning team will receive a prize.
Rules:
1) Teams can only use the condoms given - cannot add or purchase more.
2) Teams may use additional materials like glue, tape or other adhesive, and can use cardboard or paper as well.
3) Teams cannot use paint or glitter.
4) No more than 25% of the visible portion of the project can be non-condom material.

A Postcard from UMBC's Production of Las Meninas
Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present a postcard from the UMBC Theatre Department's production of Las Meninas (2010).
Las Meninas postcard, 2010. UPUB TI, University Archives, Special Collections, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Baltimore, MD)
Las Meninas, a play that touched on the subjects of race, gender, and culture in King Louis XIV's court, was the most recent production of UMBC's to appear at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), university theater's most prestigious competition. Six other UMBC plays have received recognition by the Kennedy Center in the course of the campus' existence, including Buried (2003), The Diary of a Scoundrel (1996), Spring's Awakening (1987), The Importance of Being Oscar (1986), and Play, Act Without Words II, Not I, Footfalls and Breath (1978). The very first production of UMBC's to receive national recognition was the Performing Arts Department's production of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown in 1974. This was also the very first time a Maryland institution had been chosen to perform at the KCACTF.

Make $20 in 45 minutes!
Help the Library by taking a short multiple choice test.
- Are you an undergraduate or graduate student at least 18 years of age?
- Do you have 45 minutes to take a test in the Library?
The Library is looking for students to participate in an assessment project. Students will take an online multiple choice test that assesses information literacy skills. The test must be taken in the Library during one of the two scheduled times.
Upon completion of the test, students will receive a $20 campus card. (Campus cards expire in 120 days).
Participation is limited to 15 students for each test date.

DoIT to Host Techfest in Spring 2016 Semester
Share your favorite technology with the UMBC community
Techfest is an effort to bring together UMBC students, faculty, and staff to share their favorite technologies with the UMBC community through several workshops. Participants will be able to choose which workshops they want to sign up for and all are encouraged to sign up and present a workshop at the event.
The Instructional Technology Team would like to know what sessions you would be interested in attending. For this survey, your name will be kept completely anonymous.
Some of workshops being considered for Techfest are:
Google Apps for Education: Collaborating with Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
Creating an ePortfolio: What should you include and what should you not include? Learn how to create your professional ePortfolio.

Meet the DoIT Staff Serving on the Professional Staff Senate
What the PSS is and what role each member serves as
The Professional Staff Senate (PSS) represents the interests and concerns of the exempt staff at UMBC. The PSS certifies elections of members to committees as provided in the Plan of Organization and provides a forum for discussion and recommendations on matters involving exempt staff and the welfare of UMBC.
The PSS also reviews academic and administrative policy as it affects the exempt staff and develops committees and acts within these committees as a vehicle to serve the membership.
PSS members starting in the front are Stacy Long (left) and Kevin Joseph (right). Behind them are Damian Doyle, Arnold Foelster, and Tom Penniston (next to Kevin Joseph)
Stacy Long, Director, Admin Affairs & Research Admin Systems, started the first of her two terms for Spring 2016 this September.
Kevin Joseph, Director of Data Warehousing and Document Imaging, served 2 years on the PSS and is now serving as a representative of the Council of University System Staff (CUSS) on year one of a two year term. CUSS functions an informed advisory role in administrative areas and in the functional support aspects of academic matters. Kevin also received the
Presidential Distinguished Staff Award in 2014.
Damian Doyle, Director of Enterprise Infrastructure and Support, is currently serving his first term as a senator for Spring 2016.
Arnold Foelster, Director of Enterprise Academic Systems, is serving his second year as a senator.
Tom Penniston, Specialist in Instructional Technology, is a CUSS representative who just started his Spring 2016 term.
While we can't say with certainty because it is has to find records going back that far, according to Jack Suess, this is the biggest group serving in PSS he can remember. Jack said, "I'm thrilled that so many DoIT staff are engaged in campus governance and working with other colleagues from across the university on issues of importance to the UMBC community."
