<div class="html-content">Special Collections continues our archival project <strong>Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th</strong>, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present a "Hagy For President" pin from the second SGA elections at UMBC. <div><br></div><div><img src="http://library.umbc.edu/speccoll/img/AG_07.jpg" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></div><div><em>"Student Action Party Hagy For President" pin. University Archives, Special Collections, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Baltimore, MD) </em><br><div><br></div><div>Darryl Hagy was UMBC's second Student Government Association president.  As a member of the Student Action Party, Hagy was passionate about getting UMBC students engaged in activism and social change. For instance, he formed the College Council on Human Relations, an innovative committee focused on service learning and community involvement. During his SGA presidency, the UMBC campus also organized an event in correspondence with the National Time-Out Day in Fall of 1968 called a "Bitch-In." The campus stopped classes for the day and invited students to discuss and speak out on topics like cooperative housing, fraternities, racism, and student power. </div><div><br></div><div>Learn More: </div><div>-<a href="http://lib.guides.umbc.edu/umbchistory" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">History of UMBC Research Guide </a></div><div>-<a href="http://aok.lib.umbc.edu/specoll/universityarchives.php" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">University Archives Webpage </a></div><div>-<a href="https://umbcbreakingground.wordpress.com/2012/10/18/from-the-archives-the-bitch-in-of-1968/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Breaking Ground on the "Bitch-In" </a></div><div><span>-</span><a href="http://contentdm.ad.umbc.edu/cdm/ref/collection/Retriever/id/12330" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Article in <em>The Retriever (Volume 2, Number 27)</em> on Darryl Hagy Winning SGA Presidency </a></div><div>-<a href="http://contentdm.ad.umbc.edu/cdm/ref/collection/Retriever/id/7090" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Article in <em>The Retriever</em> (Volume 3, Number 6) on the College Council on Human Relations </a></div><div>-<a href="http://contentdm.ad.umbc.edu/cdm/ref/collection/Retriever/id/12345" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Article in <em>The Retriever (Volume 3, Number 10)</em> on the "Bitch-In" </a></div><div></div><div><br></div><div>View All: <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts?tag=archives-gold" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts?tag=archives-gold </a></div></div></div>

Six other UMBC plays have received recognition by the Kennedy Center in the course of the campus' existence, including <em>Buried</em> (2003), <em>The Diary of a Scoundrel</em> (1996), <em>Spring's Awakening </em>(1987), <em>The Importance of Being Oscar</em> (1986), and <em>Play, Act Without Words II, Not I, Footfalls and Breath</em> (1978).  The very first production of UMBC's to receive national recognition was the Performing Arts Department's production of <em>You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown</em> in 1974. This was also the very first time a Maryland institution had been chosen to perform at the KCACTF. </div><div><br></div><div>Learn More:</div><div><br></div><div>-<a href="http://lib.guides.umbc.edu/umbchistory" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">History of UMBC Research Guide</a></div><div>-<a href="http://aok.lib.umbc.edu/specoll/universityarchives.php" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">University Archives Webpage</a><br>-<a href="http://contentdm.ad.umbc.edu/cdm/landingpage/collection/theatreprod" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Theatre Department Production Materials in UMBC's Digital Collections</a><br></div><div>-<a href="http://contentdm.ad.umbc.edu/cdm/ref/collection/Retriever/id/9541" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Article in <em>The Retriever</em> on <em>Las Meninas</em></a></div><div>-<a href="http://contentdm.ad.umbc.edu/cdm/ref/collection/Retriever/id/8380" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Article in <em>The Retriever</em> on <em>You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown</em> </a></div><div>-<a href="http://theatre.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Theatre Website </a></div><div><br></div><div>View All: <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts?tag=archives-gold" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> http://my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts?tag=archives-gold</a></div></div>
