The Rise of Digital Signage at UMBC

<Tagline>How you can get a digital display for your department</Tagline>

You walk by them daily, but have you ever wondered what the software behind the digital signs around UMBC is and how your department can get one of them for their own use?

Introducing Rise Vision, a low-cost digital signage software UMBC uses to display anything from google spreadsheets to full blown videos. It’s easy to learn and your department can greatly benefit from having one. If you currently have digital signage, Rise Vision can be a fraction of the cost of typical signage.

Currently, there are over 40 displays active on campus, all from different departments. Everywhere from the Biology building to the Columbus Center and the Library all have Rise powering their displays.

Rise Vision is entirely web based interface, so you can do it on your laptop, smartphone, and even work on it from home to update your display. You can even set Rise Vision to allow for others to control it.

Your content can be as simple as a professor list with their room numbers or whole video presentations complete with all sorts of video transitions. You can even do a combination of both as Rise Vision is flexible enough to tailor what content you want to display. If you need to update any content, you can just go into the file itself without needing to update through Rise Vision as it integrates with services like Google Drive.

DoIT will support with the setup and infrastructure, and recommendation of implementation with your department. Once everything is setup and necessary training is complete, DoIT will turn it over to your department so you can begin to manage your own content.

If your department is interested in Rise Vision, contact David Toothe of DoIT for more information.

Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present two old UMBC bumper stickers.

Bumper Stickers. University Publications, University Archives, Special Collections, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Baltimore, MD)

Parking has been a common complaint at UMBC since the campus was first opened in 1966. Early issues of The Retriever describe similar parking problems to what students face today: a lack of parking space, frequent parking tickets, and congested traffic. One of the most frequent complaints by students was about the limited amount of white spaces (those reserved for students) and seemingly abundant amount of yellow spaces (those reserved for faculty). By 1976, parking spaces of any kind were hard to come by, with an open letter in The Retriever stating that there were a mere 3,500 spaces available for over 6,500 cars registered.

Learn More:

-History of UMBC Research Guide

-University Archives Webpage

-Aerial Photograph of Campus Showing Parking Lot Construction (1969)

-Article in The Retriever (Volume 11, Number 5) Entitled "Parking Problems"

-UMBC Original Master Plan 1965 Showing Planned Parking Lots

-UMBC Parking Webpage

View All: my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts?tag=archives-gold

The first issue of UMBC's newspaper contained many of the early activities and traditions of UMBC.
