    <div class="html-content"><u><strong>POSITION TITLE:</strong></u> Library Services Specialist (Job # 035)<br><strong><u>CLOSING DATE:</u></strong> 2016-08-31<br><br><u><strong>CATEGORY:</strong></u> Clerical/Administrative/Office<br><u><strong>PERSONNEL STATUS:</strong></u> Nonexempt, Full-time, Regular<br><u><strong>DEPARTMENT:</strong></u> Library<br><br><u><strong>RESPONSIBILITIES:</strong></u> Reporting to the Acquisitions Coordinator, the incumbent will join the Technical Services Department of the Library and will be responsible for receiving and processing materials that are shelf-ready. Specific duties include: performing basic database maintenance for library collections in several databases for a variety of materials including weeding and transferring library collections materials; copying cataloging gift materials and materials for the Resource Center for Language and Culture; assisting with other projects such as metadata creation for digitized collections; following detailed established procedures for receiving and cataloging materials; making decisions based on established procedures to determine the appropriate course of action to take; and performing other duties as assigned. <br><br><u><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:</strong></u><br>Requires a Bachelor's degree and one year of experience directly related to the primary duties of the position. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team, and able to exercise initiative in applying rules, procedures and instructions. Proficiency in using library technology, software and databases strongly desired.     <div class="html-content">Special Collections continues our archival project <strong>Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th</strong>, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present a poster from Quadmania 2003. <div><br></div><div><img src="http://library.umbc.edu/speccoll/img/AG_44.jpg" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></div><div><br></div><div><em>Quadmania Poster, 2003. Student Life Archives. Cared for by David Hoffman. University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Baltimore, MD) </em></div><div><br></div><div>UMBC's first Quadmania happened in 1981. Over 600 people gathered together on the Quad to listen to various local bands. The event was meant to be a step towards bringing concerts to UMBC and it proved successful. Quadmania continued to be celebrated on the Quad until it was moved to the RAC where it is now held currently.     <div class="html-content"><p>Building upon the inaugural idea of Dr. Shanna Smith (Visiting Professor of English at Jackson State University, former GA for the PROMISE AGEP and PROMISE Peer Mentor at College Park), and the book “Sisters in the Dissertation House” by Dr. Jennifer Bacon, we are happy to present our 2016 event: “Sisters in the Dissertation House – Dessert Discussion 2016.” This event will be held at the Hotel at Arundel Preserve, from 8:30 PM – 10 PM on Friday, August 19, 2016.  <strong><span>This event is part of the larger 2016 PROMISE Summer Success Institute (SSI).</span></strong>  (Details and registration for the SSI:  <a href="http://bit.ly/PROMISESSI2016" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://bit.ly/PROMISESSI2016</a>)</p>

<Title>Quarterly System Patching over the next two weeks</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>As part of our ongoing commitment to security, the Unix Infrastructure group will be conducting its quarterly system patching on Friday August 12th, Tuesday August 16th, and Saturday August 20th.  While many of the systems will be patched without any service disruption, there are several systems which require the downtime of key services.  The schedule below outlines which key services will be offline and for how long. </span></p><br><p><span>Friday August 12th (work will begin at 5:00pm and conclude by 11:00pm, most systems will only be down a small portion of this time):</span></p><ul><li><p><span>The new web hosting environment will be down (pages will be available but any database calls will not work)</span></p></li><li><p><span>Student mySQL databases will be offline</span></p></li></ul><ul><li><p><span>Access to Cyrus and UMBC Webmail (accounts not migrated to UMBC Gmail)</span></p></li><ul><li><p><span>All mail will be queued up and delivered after the server is patched</span></p></li><li><p><span>Expected to be unreachable from 5pm to 8pm</span></p></li></ul><li><p><span>All HFS (user) servers will be offline</span></p></li><li><p><span>Userpages will be unavailable</span></p></li><li><p><span>License5 will be down (autodesk, cadence, idl, schrodinger, xilinx, mathematica)</span></p></li><li><p><span>Perseus will be unavailable</span></p></li></ul><p><span>Tuesday, August 16th</span></p><ul><li><p><span>RT will be down from 5pm to 7pm</span></p></li></ul><p><span>Saturday August 20th (work will begin at 9:00am and conclude by 11:00am with the systems only being down a portion of that time)</span></p><ul><li><p><span>myUMBC lite page will be up resulting in reduced myUMBC functionality</span></p></li><li><p><span>Wiki will be unavailable</span></p></li><li><span>The sites (wordpress) web hosting environment will be unreachable</span></li></ul></span></div>
